Ys: The Oath in Felghana review

The action role-playing series Ys (pronounced \"ee-ss”) is one long, continuous adventure cut into digestible pieces. The Oath in Felghana, in particular, acts as a remake of Ys III: Wanderers from Ys, which developer Nihon Falcom released in 1989. The updated version came to PSP in 2010 with a localization courtesy of Xseed Games, but the game hit Steam only last month. Is it worth the $15 price point? For gamers looking to tap into the market of shorter RPGs (10-15 hours in this instance) or anyone seeking a good challenge: yes. In The Oath in Felghana, adventurers Adol Christin and Dogi arrive in Felghana, home to the little town of Redmont where Dogi grew up with his childhood friend Chester and Chester's sister, Elena. In typical RPG fashion, monsters have been encroaching on the usually peaceful locale, a disturbance exacerbated by the rash actions of the corrupt Count McGuire. The game involves a tight-knit group of characters, mostly townsfolk and the ruling class, and centers around Redmont. As the silent protagonist Adol, players must unravel a dark plot that has caused Chester to serve the sinister Count, who has been inflicting hardship on the people of Felghana. Gameplay consists of fighting enemies in dungeons and confronting much tougher bosses, using a blend of physical attacks and magic.

Ys: The Oath in Felghana Review

Adol the Red is truly a hero for the ages. Not only does he appear to save the day in each new Ys title, but he also returns to the past to safeguard those he's already freed. Ys: The Oath in Felghana was originally released for the PC as a remake of the classic Ys III, and now, the title moves to the PSP for more handheld monster slaying. It showcases both action and platforming elements while providing a wide range of selectable difficulty settings for the adventurous, as well as the timid. The controls and the 3D world sometimes just don't get along, but there's enough solid action to tempt those with a need to blow up huge adversaries and bring peace to troubled lands. Felghana is a small nation bordered by mountains and sea; it is isolated but rich in the valuable and unique raval ore. Its people have been governed for the past 20 years by an appointee of the Romun Empire, Count McGuire, a harsh master who treats his charges cruelly through taxation without representation and who issues all manner of strange edicts. The region is also the birthplace of Dogi, Adol's muscular companion, so when the pair hears of a disturbance in Felghana, nothing will do but to sail right over and investigate.

Ys: The Oath in Felghana

Full disclosure: I had never played a Ys game before being assigned The Oath in Felghana. I heard lots about the long-running series, but this was my first experience with its old-school hack-and-slash gameplay. As it turns out, it was a perfectly pleasant introduction. Ys is an isometric action/RPG that plays similarly to Secret of Mana. You cut up enemies, level up, and collect items to speed you along on your quest to save the troubled town of Redmont. The game sticks to a classic formula, but battles are kept fast and fun, and new powers are introduced frequently. In addition to the obvious increases in defense or attack power provided by new equipment, accessories give new abilities, such as wading through lava without taking damage. If you want to uncover all of Felghana's secrets, you need to revisit dungeons once you've gained access to each new power. This backtracking is optional, but it builds the world in an enjoyable, almost Metroid-esque way. Each area feels like it's hiding many secrets for when you return at full power. Oath features a few interesting characters – particularly the devious (and awfully named) Chester – but since the game is a remake of the generally disliked Ys III, the plot is what you'd expect for a game that originated in the ‘80s.
