Sega is blaming poor game sales in the U.S. and Europe for a wave of upcoming game cancellations and layoffs. The company has told investors that it plans to focus on its stable of franchises such as Sonic the Hedgehog, Aliens, and Total War moving forward as it works to streamline its operations. Other titles in development, which haven't been announced, are being scrapped. Sega Sammy Holdings revealed the news in its statement to investors. "We conducted detailed reviews of earnings projections for titles targeted toward the U.S. and European markets and decided to narrow down sales titles from the following period and after to strong IPs, such as “Sonic the Hedgehog,”, “Football Manager”, “Total War” and “Aliens” which&...

The streets of Hong Kong can be rough, especially when you’re tangling with the hard-as-nails mob, The Triads. Thankfully, I was able to fight and race through the crowded, crime-filled streets from the safety and comfort of GDC 2012 at a recent Square Enix event. My hands-on time with Sleeping Dogs involved chasing down targets through the streets, cramming thugs’ faces into fan blades, and speeding down the streets in a souped-up race car. My time as Wei Shen, an undercover cop infiltrating the deadly Triads, begins with a meeting of mobsters in a room tucked away inside a restaurant. A guy named Ming owes us money, and it’s up to me to make him pay up. Leaving the restaurant I pass dining patrons, rows of vendors in the streets slinging pirated movies, and tourists ta...

Despite those facts, Yakuza: Dead Souls is looking like a major departure from the series' dialogue-heavy, melee-based titles in the past. Take a look below at the newest look at the game, featuring the Yakuza shooting their way through untold numbers of the undead. (Please visit the site to view this media)

No offense, but when your biggest-selling game is Virtua Tennis 4, then it's no surprise that you've posted a loss for the quarter. Sega reports that for the first fiscal quarter ending in June the company posted a net loss of 2.22 billion yen ($28.9 million), with sales falling 28.5 percent as compared to last year during the same period. Virtua Tennis 4 was the biggest seller with 670,000 units, and Thor: God of Thunder and Yakuza: Of the End both moved around 400,000 units apiece. Although Sega blames the devastating tsunami and earthquake as influencing the loss (primarily in its pachinko business), it also notes that there was weak demand for its games in the west, and that it "needs to adapt to [a] changing business environment in which the market demand for new content...
