X-Men Destiny Wii Review

The Wii version of X-Men Destiny is a watered-down version of the extremely mediocre PS3 and Xbox 360 releases. Translation: X-Men Destiny sucks on Wii. The idea behind X-Men Destiny centers around bringing players into Marvel's classic world of mutant conflict with a fresh role to play. You are a new mutant, one who's just experiencing the awakening of his or her superpowers, and you'd direct their first steps into the larger story around them. Will you side with the X-Men, using your new gifts to uphold Professor X's peaceful ideals? Or will you align yourself with the Brotherhood of Mutants, choosing Magneto's path of mutant superiority and war against normal humans? It's a game with ambition, one that could have been a true high point for the X-Men brand. Unfortunately, though, the final product as delivered will instead be remembered as a low; very little of the original idea's spark shines through in this mess of a game. The resulting game feels rushed, unready and incomplete. Its ugliness assaults your senses right from the start, as even the Wii launch screen and opening menu come afflicted with terrible artwork. These images look like placeholders; rough stand-ins better suited for an early build of a game in progress destined for replacement by the real, final art.

X-Men: Destiny Review

What good are mutant superpowers without exciting reasons to use them? As X-Men: Destiny proves, they're no good at all. In this busted beat-'em-up, clobbering swarms of stupid bad guys with your newfound abilities is tedious, and although a constant supply of choices tries to convince you that your actions have real impact on this tumultuous world, they don't have much impact at all. Destiny does the incredible: it makes being a genetic marvel a generic bore. It's a grim new era for the mutants. Professor X is dead, and anti-mutant sentiment is running high. You choose one of three characters, each with his or her own backstory. Whomever you choose, your mutant powers awaken when a mutant-human peace rally in San Francisco is attacked by anti-mutant thugs called purifiers. As you come to terms with your powers, you're given many choices that let you align yourself more with Cyclops and the X-Men or with Magneto and the Brotherhood. But these choices have almost no impact on the course of the game. For instance, you can make Brotherhood choices straight down the line and still end up fighting Magneto in a boss battle.
