World of Tanks Review

Hear the title, see a few screenshots, and you could be forgiven for assuming that World of Tanks is a simulation game inaccessible to anyone who doesn't know the difference between a T20 and a T29. That's not the case at all though; World of Tanks is a shooter first and foremost, with uncomplicated controls and a relatively sedate pace that make it easy to get into. Furthermore, it's a free-to-play game that, while loaded with plenty of ways for you to spend money, can be enjoyed for countless hours without ever doing so. World of Tanks wouldn't be difficult to recommend even if reaching for your wallet was a prerequisite, so recommending that you give it a try for free is a no-brainer. World of Tanks even controls like a shooter; you use the WASD keys for movement and the mouse to aim and shoot. There are some other controls used for things like enabling cruise control, locking your turret so that it doesn't follow your mouse as you look around, and switching between different shell types, but familiarizing yourself with these can wait until you're comfortable with the basics.

World of Tanks Review

If you're not familiar with Wargaming.net's free-to-play game World of Tanks, the premise is simple: take a shooter and replace the people with massive, lumbering and highly realistic tanks. Narrow corridors are replaced by wide, open vistas, and your range of weapons are replaced by... more tanks. A whole world of them, actually. The structure of World of Tanks is session-based, like playing a round of Counter-Strike, and like Counter-Strike there are two ways to win each session. Either destroy all of your opponents or capture their base. Tank combat in World of Tanks is, for the most part, satisfying. When you land a shell right in the rear of an enemy tank, the solid thud of the impact is very convincing, and you feel like you're at the wheel of a brutally powerful machine of war. Much of the combat in World of Tanks has at least some element of luck, and at times that luck can work against you to such a degree that it becomes frustrating and infuriating. This is most evident in the way tanks aim, which is displayed by a circle that widens with movement and slowly narrows the longer you stay still. Even if you're completely immobile long enough for the targeting circle to become as narrow as possible, there will always be some leeway, and that leeway, over large distances, can cause you to miss more often than you hit.

World of Tanks Review

A terse conversation I had with a friend regarding World of Tanks -- a free-to-play, semi-simulation tank shooting game I downloaded to fill the time between Company of Heroes matches -- went like this: "Is it getting better as you rank up?" He asked, remembering the wretched, plodding, low-tier tanks we were subjected to during the open beta. "No," I hastily replied, almost repulsed by the idea of the game getting better, "God, no." World of Tanks never gets any better, nor does it ever get any worse. Like so many free-to-play grindfests, it simply exists. I hate writing about games like this -- games that aren't particularly bad, but aren't terribly fun, either. Some reviewers might call it a "time-waster," a passive-aggressive term I like to call a complimensult. World of Tanks is a great time-waster. The skill ceiling is roughly two feet tall, and once you've grasped the fairly simple sighting mechanics (Hint: Sit still, and you won't get detected by enemy radios), you've climbed a good chunk of the ladder. The rest falls almost entirely on time investment. Constant grinding via instant matchmaking battles earns you credits and experience points to cash in for new-and-improved tanks and hardware. Competing against fellow grinders slowly advances your tank's crewmen as well, which allows for more effective grinding in the future.

World of Tanks Review

Drive historically accurate World War II tanks onto the battlefield and test your skills in 15-v-15 multiplayer team battles in this incredible, free-to-play PC MMO-shooter. I can’t think of many “freemium” games that have truly captured my imagination. They’re usually super-casual time sinks that get really repetitive after a while, or they’re fun for a bit, but simply don’t offer much in terms of lasting gameplay. Not World of Tanks. This absolutely brilliant tank warfare game snuck up and caught me by surprise a few weeks ago, and I’ve been playing it solidly ever since. It’s a simple enough concept – a PvP WWII tank warfare game that pits teams of 15 players against one another in a number of superbly designed, European-themed battlegrounds – but it’s executed incredibly well. The game features a roster of some 150 historically accurate tanks from three nations – Russia, Germany and the US (British and French tanks are going to be added in a future update). Players start out with three basic, lightweight tanks, one from each nation, which can be taken into combat immediately simply by entering the battlefield queue.

World of Tanks (Preview)

We roll around in Tigers and Shermans as we take a look at the beta for one of the more intriguing MMOs out there: World of Tanks. It has been more than a decade since I was last able to get into a game dedicated to re-creating tank warfare. Sure, many gamers dabbled with tanks in games such as Battlefield, but it’s been too long since an armored-warfare simulation has been accessible to the general gaming audience. Wargaming.net's World of Tanks may fill that void. It's an MMO that focuses on team-based combat between groups of players using historical U.S., Soviet, and German tanks from the early 1930s to the start of the '50s. Bottom of the Barrel When you start World of Tanks, you gain access to only the most basic tanks of each of the three nations. Slow, underarmored, and with little in the way of firepower, these tanks are the jumping-off points from which all progress in the game begins. Jump into your first battle and the game places you with others still in the first two tiers of the games’ 10; these tanks were generally regarded as obsolete by the start of World War II. As of now in the open beta, the only mode available is a simple base capture in which one team wins when either they hold the enemy base for long enough or all of the opposing players’ tanks are toast.
