It's funny how something that starts out so simple can expand into something of grandeur. Take WipEout, for instance. First launched back in 1995 for the PS One by Psygnosis, the series has since become a staple in Sony's release slate, with several sequels following across various systems, including the PlayStation 2 and the PlayStaiton Portable. The series reached a high point when the company released the downloadable WipEout HD, consisting of high-definition 60-frames-per-second visuals and remarkable track selection — along with the electrifying Fury DLC. Now the series comes racing back to the scene again with WipEout 2048, the series debut for the PlayStation Vita. Hang on tight — you're gonna like this ride. As with previous entries in the series, your goal is to finish first across a number of races using a selection from various hovercraft types, sponsored by teams. The more you finish in the lead, the more you unlock, including circuit races and other events. Granted, it's not as heavy on unlockable content as other games, but you still feel a sense of progression as you storm into the lead. While you race, speed is vitally important. Losing momentum can easily cost you a place or two if you're not careful.

Per series tradition, races in WipEout are ridiculously fast. Don't glance away, consider changing your major, or think about where to get lunch, because your ass will be eating a wall the split second your mind wanders. As usual, players blaze around a futuristic track and pick up weapons which they must use wisely on their path to the winner's circle. Those new to the series will inevitably compare this to Mario Kart, which, while somewhat valid, are not as accurate as they might initially seem. True, both are racing games that involve shooting opponents with power-ups, but that's about where the similarity begins and ends. For one thing, it's a lot harder to connect with the projectiles in WipEout, and when one does get clocked, it's usually not as damning. Races are much faster and more difficult, thanks in part to the inclusion of twitch skills and mechanics like strafing and barrel rolling. Weapon pick-up pads in 2048 are divided into defensive and offensive categories; drive over a green defensive pad and you're bound to pick up something like mines or a speed boost, while driving over a yellow offensive pad snags rockets and other projectiles.

Few games have defined Sony's PlayStation brand over the ages like WipEout, with SCE Studio Liverpool's (then Psygnosis) futuristic racer arriving with the original PlayStation in 1995. This high-speed racer wasn't just a vision the year 2052; it combined a techno soundtrack, sleek 3D models and a blistering sense of speed to make impressionable young teens feel like this was the future of gaming itself.Since that fateful 90s launch, the franchise has been one of the shining jewels in Sony's first-party crown, used to add a necessary touch of pizzazz and high-speed spectacle to launch line-ups and the latest hardware. WipEout 2048 is a prequel of sorts, then, designed to showcase the origins of the series while simultaneously flaunting the impressive the-future-is-now power of the Vita hardware.And, yes, it's certainly a sight to behold - the screen is packed with so much detail it's actually difficult for your eyes to process the on-screen mix of light trails, twisting architecture and rival craft. The cost of all this detail is framerate, and occasionally it feels like a slight step back from the series' last iteration, WipEout HD, which catapulted players through some buttery-smooth 60fps racing.

The Wipeout series and Sony consoles have a long history together, dating back to the PSone's launch window in 1995. When Sony released its first portable 10 years later, the anti-gravity racer was sitting on store shelves right alongside it. History repeats itself this year, as Wipeout 2048 greets new Vita owners on day one. It's a gorgeous and fast-paced racer as always, but a strong sense of familiarity and some questionable hardware utilization bring the experience down a bit. If you've played any recent game in the series, you have a good idea of what to expect from 2048. Bells and whistles like photo mode, pilot assist, and motion controls have been seen before, and the core gameplay still revolves around hitting speed pads and collecting (or absorbing) weapons and power-ups. Campaign mode is the meat of the game, featuring several seasons with optional paths. You participate in required races, combat events, time trials, and zone races, but secondary events branch off the main path for those looking for more XP. These become more necessary as you reach the tougher races, as they often reward you with new vehicles. Leveling up is crucial, as it's another method to unlock the more advanced crafts.
Wipeout 2048 Review
Wipeout 2048 is all about the familiar: the feel of the ships, the layout of the tracks, and the punch of a rocket. This is a game you've played countless times before and on numerous Sony consoles. But does that make it any less thrilling? Fortunately not. The mechanics of the floating speed racers have been sharpened to a fine point, with tracks that are intelligently designed to reward both racing skill and aggressive combat. The visuals are also as smooth as they are beautiful, providing breathtaking vistas for you to ogle during the frantic, twitchy races. If you're expecting heaps of innovation from 2048, you might come away disappointed. But as soon as you dive into the mammoth single-player and multiplayer campaigns to blast a few ships, you'll be having too much fun to notice. Much of Wipeout's charm lies in its vehicles; sleek, antigravity ships that float above the track, possessing loads of acceleration and a full complement of weapons. By floating, the ships handle quite unlike a traditional, ground-based vehicle. They glide effortlessly over the surface of the track, unconstrained by the likes of friction. With little traction, guiding the ships around a circuit is tricky, particularly if you're new to the series. You may initially spend a lot of time careering into walls and crashing into other opponents.
