The streets of Hong Kong can be rough, especially when you’re tangling with the hard-as-nails mob, The Triads. Thankfully, I was able to fight and race through the crowded, crime-filled streets from the safety and comfort of GDC 2012 at a recent Square Enix event. My hands-on time with Sleeping Dogs involved chasing down targets through the streets, cramming thugs’ faces into fan blades, and speeding down the streets in a souped-up race car. My time as Wei Shen, an undercover cop infiltrating the deadly Triads, begins with a meeting of mobsters in a room tucked away inside a restaurant. A guy named Ming owes us money, and it’s up to me to make him pay up. Leaving the restaurant I pass dining patrons, rows of vendors in the streets slinging pirated movies, and tourists ta...

Square Enix registered the trademark for Sleeping Dogs a few weeks back, leading some to speculate that it might be a new entry in the Kane & Lynch franchise. The publisher squashed those rumors today with a live-action trailer for the game. If the game's undercover cop in the Hong Kong underworld conceit sounds familiar, it could be because the game was once known as True Crime: Hong Kong. “Working on Sleeping Dogs has been such a huge passion for the team at United Front Games, and we’re really pleased to be working with Square Enix London Studios,” said Stephen Van Der Mescht, executive producer at United Front Games. “The extensive experience that both studios have in creating compelling open world gameplay and rich, rewarding combat makes for a pe...

COO Florian Hunziker says rhythm-game studio's revenues will hit $100 million in 2011, thanks to 2.5-million-unit-selling Dance Central. Rock Band may need a "creative reinterpretation," but the studio behind that franchise is clearly doing something right. Some 12 months after being dumped by media megacorp Viacom, Harmonix is on track to post its most profitable year to date. Harmonix got its groove back with Dance Central. Speaking to Bloomberg, Harmonix COO Florian Hunziker said that the studio expects 2011 revenues to come in around $100 million. And though he didn't offer specific net income figures, Hunziker did tell Bloomberg that 2011 will also be the most profitable for the company in its history. Battlefield 3 publisher's spokesman mocks call for civility from rival, suggests competing blockbuster shooter franchise could be gone in two or three years. Last week at Gamescom, Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg called for a cease-fire in verbal hostilities surrounding Electronic Arts' Battlefield 3 going up against his own company's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, asking the equivalent of "Can't we all just get along?" It turns out the answer to that rhetorical question is "No." The Battlefield 3-Modern Warfare 3 rivalry is ideal for fans of sniping. As reported by Kotaku, Electronic Arts spokesman Jeff Brown responded to Hirshberg with a statement of his own. "Welcome to the big leagues, Eric," Brown said. "I know you're new in the job, but someo...

Will Square Enix keep the already established True Crime brand and just change the subtitle or rebrand the franchise alto...

We haven't seen a new installment in the True Crime series in six years, and its attempted comeback has been plagued with issues. It initially faced delays, but eventually got axed altogether by Activision. Even with its troubles, it may still see the light of day if Square Enix has anything to say about it. The Japanese publisher recently picked up the rights to True Crime: Hong Kong, which is still in development at United Front Games. "When we first saw and got our hands on the game we fell in love with it," said Lee Singleton of Square Enix London Studios. "When we met the team at United Front Games, it was a done deal in our eyes – we instantly recognized the huge potential in the game and the team." Despite canning the project, Activision seems happy wi...

Final Fantasy publisher picks up United Front Games' open-world crime game from Activision, release window and platforms undetermined. True Crime: Hong Kong has been granted a reprieve. According to Gamasutra, Activision's cancelled open-world crime game has been sold to Square Enix, and is ramping up development at United Front Games. A True Crime by any other name would smell less cancelled. While Square Enix has picked up the game itself, it has not picked up the True Crime franchise. As a result, the publisher will be rebranding the game before its eventual release. Square Enix is not yet saying when that release window will come, nor has it indicated a final name or even platforms for the release. When the game's cancellation was announced in Feb...

Ubisoft announces promotion with specialty retailer for upcoming guitar game; voucher good for any guitar purchase at national axe warehouse. Though Harmonix and Activision will not release new Rock Band or Guitar Hero games in 2011, Ubisoft plans to this fall with Rocksmith. Now the French publisher has announced how it hopes to secure preorders for the game. The publisher recently said those who reserve the title at specialty retailer GameStop will earn a $25 gift card to national axe warehouse Guitar Center, where the credit can be applied toward the purchase of any guitar. $25 won't buy a guitar, but it'll help. A standard version of Rocksmith is due out this fall for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC priced at $79.99. Additionally, a $200 Gi...

Updated LinkedIn profiles for two dozen former United Front staff indicate widespread departures following Activision project cancellation. It has been a tense period to be a studio working with Activision Blizzard in the past few weeks. In addition to shutting down veteran racing house Bizarre Creations, the publishing giant pulled the plug on its ailing rhythm game and skateboarding franchises at the top of the month, leading to an indefinite postponement of future Guitar Hero, DJ Hero, and Tony Hawk development. True Crime: Hong Kong was slated to launch later this year. United Front Games and its True Crime: Hong Kong were also a target of the publisher's culling efforts, after Activision Blizzard heads deemed the project not "good enough." That...

Here at Maximum PC, we usually prefer gaming news that's brought to you by the letters “P” and “C,” but a doozy of an earthshaker dropped today over in Console Land, so here we are. Anyway, remember when Guitar Hero was a national institution – a household name? Well, now it's set to remain just that: a memory. And nothing more. “Due to continued declines in the music genre, the company will disband Activision Publishing’s Guitar Hero business unit and discontinue development on its Guitar Hero game for 2011,” Activision said in its fiscal 2011 report. In other words, Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock was the series' swan song, and now only silence remains. Oh, but it gets worse. As a result of Guitar Hero's sad (but timely) demise, 500 Activision employees are now jobless....

Once-mighty rhythm franchise's latest installment canned; DJ Hero discontinued; United Front's open-world game also given the chop; no new skateboarding game in 2011; Activision's global workforce being culled by 7%. Just under two years ago, the Guitar Hero franchise was riding high, having racked up over $2 billion in sales from its various installments. However, the intervening period has seen its fortunes fall, with sales plummeting to the point that the latest installment in the series, Warriors of Rock, sold fewer than 100,000 copies during its debut month last September. Guitar Hero won't rock in 2011. But will it ever again? As a result of the franchise's weakening, Activision shut down original publisher RedOctane and hit former developer N...
