Trine 2 Review

With the wholesome appeal of a fairy tale, Trine 2 is unapologetically packed with comfortable tropes. Like the first game, it stars a trio of classic fantasy heroes: a merry knight, a sly thief, and a nervy wizard. Their adventure bustles them through ye olde tale of rescue the princess--via enchanted forest and murky cavern, wherein they thrash goblins and giant spiders. But out of that conventional premise, the game conjures a gorgeous and gratifying platform puzzler. Trine 2's environments could have been lifted off the screen of a latter-day Fantasia. Deep, richly detailed levels pop with lively, luminous color. The forest is home to luscious glowing foliage and glistening colossal snails. Gloomier levels house oversized spiders, animated with skin-crawling authenticity. One level, taking in sunset on a tropical beach, is stop-and-stare beautiful. The hero character models are very slightly less crisp than in the PC version, but that nitpick is dwarfed by the general visual loveliness. Each hero has a simple, distinct set of powers, and the controls for each are pleasingly intuitive, making smart use of the triggers and right analog stick.

Trine 2

It's always gratifying to see a good game make the changes it needs to become great in a sequel. That's the happy scenario with Trine 2, one of this year's most beautiful, rewarding, and downright fun downloadable titles. With online or local cooperative play, slick puzzle design, and a whimsical fairy tale tone, Trine 2 is a year-ending treat you shouldn't miss. Like its predecessor, Trine 2 stars three fantasy archetypes as they platform and puzzle their way through a lush fantasy storybook. The knight, wizard, and thief are called upon to save the kingdom once again, and the lighthearted banter between the characters keeps the otherwise clich'd story rolling. The game's greatest strength lies in the distinct abilities of each of the characters. The simple-minded knight's sword waving fends off the most dangerous monsters, while his hammer smashes walls. The clever thief's grappling hook sends her hurtling up to hard to reach places, while her bow hits distant spear-throwers. The cowardly wizard conjures new platforms and boxes out of thin air, or levitates nasty goblins out of reach. With such varied movesets, Trine 2's central gameplay conceit concerns figuring out when to use which abilities to solve a puzzle.

Trine 2 Review

A trine is a group of three. It was also a clever 2009 puzzle platformer starring a trio of adventurers, each with specific talents. Lucky us, now we have a sequel, Trine 2, that offers more fun physics-based challenges, more beautiful vistas, and adds online multiplayer to the mix. The first thing I noticed about Trine 2 is its stunning visuals. Each scene, from forests to caves to lazy beaches, shines with rich detail and startling lighting effects. There is always, always something amazing to distract you. Trine 2 easily makes for one of the prettiest games of the year. If you played the first Trine, you'll find a very familiar game here. Players run from left to right through fantasy spectacles, surmounting obstacles and slaying a few goblins along the way. You have three heroes at your disposal: a wizard that can conjure blocks and platforms, a thief with a bow and grappling hook, and a knight with sword, hammer, and shield. The brilliance of Trine 2 is that it mostly leaves the choice of which hero to use up to you. I love it when a game lets me off my leash and tells me "have fun," -- and that's the kind of game Trine 2 is. The game does fail to teach the player some important mechanics, though, resulting in slight exasperation when you don't realize a solution is even possible.

Trine 2 Review

As you play Trine 2, even non-gamer passers-by will stop to remark on how gorgeous it looks as its visually delightful fairytale story comes to life on screen. Positively slathered with bright colors, amazing attention to detail, and beautiful lighting, it's a dreamlike world that takes you back to grandpa reading a fairytale bedtime story, except you get to play it and solve clever physics and platforming puzzles along the way. The heroic trio of Wizard, Knight, and Thief returns to follow the flying magic... sparkly... thingy known as the Trine, which suddenly gets the team back together for another round of kingdom-saving. Soon, it becomes a mildly dark and creepy tale of sibling rivalry gone worse than usual. The twist is unsurprising to say the least, but enjoyable and well suited for the fairytale setting. All glory to the Hypnotoad! Relative to the first game, the characters are about three times as large on the screen, and the added detail pays dividends in personality. Particularly for the Knight, whose animations always made me lean in close to watch, whether he was heaving a warhammer at a giant spider or swimming by pulling himself along with his shield. Magic fingers "I'm a big fan of the excellent mouse and keyboard controls."

Trine 2's environments could have been lifted off the screen of a latter-day Fantasia or from the pages of a particularly lovely storybook. They pop with lively, luminous color, and rich details that give this 2D platformer great environmental depth. The forest is home to luscious glowing foliage and glistening colossal snails. Gloomier levels house giant spiders, animated with skin-crawling authenticity. One picturesque level--sunset on a tropical beach--could have been a gaudy, but is instead stop-and-stare beautiful. Each hero has a simple, distinct set of powers. The knight has a sword and shield for fighting, as well as a warhammer for smashing obstacles; the thief has a grappling hook, along with a bow and arrow; and the wizard can levitate items and summon boxes or planks from thin air.
