Trackmania 2: Canyon Review
Trackmania 2 doesn't offer a sophisticated career mode, realistic tracks and dizzying array of purchasable cars like other racing titles. It has single-player content, but Nadeo's sequel isn't meant to be played alone. This is a franchise about sharing, about community, and about barreling through sky-high loops after taking a high-speed jump off a highway elevated above a canyon floor. It comes with an assortment of official tracks, but the real joy of the game is picking through the community's creations and jumping into servers to compete against others for fast times. Even so soon after launch, there's already an impressive amount of content out there. If you only want to play alone, there are still a few things you can do. The included tracks have benchmarks built in for you to compete against for medals, and if you're not an expert racer the content will take quite a while to unlock. Even getting to the end of some of the Black-level tracks can be a significant challenge, let alone burning through at high enough speeds to earn medals. While the content can be fun to race through, the experience can feel a little lonely with only ghost cars to accompany you.

This is how TrackMania 2: Canyon begins, and for a long while this is how it stays. That's not a bad thing. This isn't a game about winning; it's a game about trying. Trying to get gold, trying to beat your friends' times, trying to shave a millisecond off your own score. It's a game about restarting, and frequently at that. For existing TrackMania fans, this description is surely familiar. The series stays true to its roots with the sequel, with an emphasis on quick-fire segments of gameplay, all neatly tied together in a package for the social media age. Getting into TrackMania 2 is a simple affair. Solo play consists of 65 tracks, the majority of which are unlocked by obtaining medals. You load up a track, start your engine, and then keep playing until you set a time you're happy with. It's great if you're interested only in score chasing, although it's far from a shallow game. Each track has been expertly designed with the leaderboards in mind. Nailing the perfect racing line to achieve the best time takes practice and experimentation as you figure out how to cut corners and start drifts earlier.

Some people like their racing games drenched in cold, hard realism. Me? I'd rather spend my time blasting around the track at absurd speed and pulling off crazy tricks than grinding gears, spinning out on straight-aways, and smashing into guardrails. TrackMania 2: Canyon's accessibility and addictive arcade racing is a perfect change of pace from the flashy rigidness of the genre's hardcore simulation leanings. Ridiculous track designs and straightforward stunt racing is the norm on these wild, dusty tracks, but modern polish and saucy new moves make this killer ride a real tour de force. The four directional buttons control acceleration, braking, and steering, and you'll use these simple controls the vast majority of the time. The tradeoff is this also increases your chances of flying out of control if you're not careful.=
