Top Spin 4 Review

Top Spin 4 tries to bridge the gap between arcade fun and in-depth tennis simulation. Sadly, this has resulted in a number of compromises that make it unappealing to fans of either. Its career mode and character development are shallow, focusing more on repetitive minigames than on tournament play. The visuals are poor, making each match look like a blocky mess, while an erratic frame rate makes animations jerky and unrealistic. Worst of all, the controls are unresponsive and often fail to register your swings, resulting in frustrating matches that you often win by dumb luck, rather than your skill with a Wii Remote. A minimal tutorial introduces you to the basics of serving and returning the ball. You move your character around using the nunchuk, while your other hand swings the Wii Remote to launch shots. By swinging from the bottom of your body to the top, you perform flat shots. Doing the opposite performs slices, while swinging horizontally performs top spins. Holding down either the B, Z, or C buttons while swinging unleashes lobs, drop shots, and fast dashes toward the net.

Pound the pavement around the world and work your way up the tennis ladder in Top Spin 4's career mode. Check out this new info on some of its inner workings. A new developer diary for the game is up, and in it, Jean-Karl Tupin-Bron (game designer) goes through what players can expect as they level up their characters. Character customization is a big part of the mode, as it includes 40 different male/female face presets (as well as sliders to tweak things yourself), over 100 hair styles, and a massive selection of clothes and equipment spanning major sponsors like Addidas, FILA, and more. Tupin-Bron also talks about XP. There are 20 levels in the game, and the XP you allocate into your player shapes how they approach the game. Are they a net player or a defensive baseliner? You can decide. Apart from allocating XP, you can also hire a coach. While coaches are suited to particular styles of play, you can also switch coaches (there are more than a 100 in the game!) and therefore tweak what kind of player you are in the process. Along the way you'll also run into objectives (like hitting a certain amount of volleys for serve and volley players) that will earn you more XP if you meet them. Check out the mode's trailer after the break.

Top Spin 4 (Preview)

Sitting on a sofa made entirely of grass, I sat and watched Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer engage in a fearsome court battle. Tennis balls rolled around my feet, and a nearby table was furnished with bowls of strawberries and cream. If it wasn't for the fact it was mid-January and I was sat in a trendy sports bar in London, I would have been forgiven for thinking I was on Henman Hill in July watching the Wimbledon final. In actuality, it was Remi Ercolani and Stephane Dupas, game designer and studio head of 2K Czech, displaying Top Spin 4 on a rather large projector screen; the 2K doubles team talking me through the next iteration of the Top Spin series. The pair weren't afraid to admit previous mistakes. The biggest problem facing Top Spin 3, they explained, was how daunting the experience was for new players. For a sport that is essentially hitting a ball back and forth across a net (although I'm aware there's slightly more to it than just this), the control set-up was incredibly intricate. The fourth iteration of the series is being designed with accessibility in mind, but the developers are well aware of the fact that they can't skimp on depth.
