Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon

We can only gaze upon Ubisoft's version of Ghost Recon for the Nintendo Wii and wonder, “What happened?” Here was a game that could have easily filled the void that the delayed Future Soldier left behind, but rather than capitalizing and making a top-notch third-party game for the system, the development team takes the lazy way out. Instead of a war game worthy of our time, we have a lame Time Crisis-like experience that isn't worth the effort. The plot is nothing special. You're part of an elite military group sent in to take down some terrorists, and they're heavily armed. That's all you need to know since the story takes a backseat to the action anyway. In the game, you're not in complete control of your character. Instead, you move automatically, while giving commands as to where your partner goes and shooting your enemies with an on-screen reticule. You do strategically move around in cover to avoid dying, but this isn't Ghost Recon at all. If the gameplay actually clicked, I could see this being an acceptable game for fans of rail-shooters.

Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon

This on-rails iteration of Ubisoft's popular Ghost Recon series underwhelms with repetitive gameplay and a bland presentation. Like that awesome video game-shaped present under the Christmas tree that turns out to be cleverly packaged socks or underwear, surprises aren't always welcome. That's the kind of letdown action shooter fans are going to be in for if they dive into Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon on the Wii without doing their homework first. There's nothing found in the screenshots or ad copy on the box to indicate that this military themed third-person action game is actually an arcade-style light gun shooter on rails. While that might not be an issue if the game were better crafted, the disappointments pile up higher the further you slog through this extremely underwhelming point-and-shoot-fest. Changing things up can be a good way to keep a franchise feeling fresh, but the way Next Level dumbs down the gameplay for the Wii and strips out the serious tactical elements that made past Ghost Recon entries so enjoyable feels insulting.

Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Review

Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon may be a recognizable name in the world of video games, but you shouldn't judge this book by its cover. The story of international conflict is a pale shadow of the eponymous author's work, and the intense, gadget-fueled tactical combat featured in previous Ghost Recon games is nowhere to be found. This is a cooperative on-rails shooter. You move through the streets of Moscow, with an AI or human companion, but the only freedom of movement you have is the choice of when to move to a new cover position. Your weapons aren't terribly exciting, and most of your enemies seem to yearn for the sweet release of death. Ghost Recon is shallow and repetitive, though there is a good amount of fun to be had here. Moving from cover to cover and shooting hundreds of soldiers has a pleasing rhythm, and your enemies and weapons provide enough variety to help keep things from getting stale. It may not be much more than a military-themed shooting gallery, but Ghost Recon provides a good amount of light entertainment. The reason you have to go to Russia and shoot a lot of bad guys is revolution.

Ghost Recon

Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon franchise made a name for itself by embracing squad-based tactical warfare over the Rambo-style, go-it-alone military shooters that dominated the landscape upon its debut in 2001. In bringing the franchise to the Wii, Ubisoft and developer Next Level Games have questionably abandoned most of the traits that made the series successful in favor of questionable third-person/rail shooter hybrid. The only area this version of Ghost Recon stays true to its namesake is with the near future plot, which takes place directly after a group of power-hungry ultranationalists stage a coup in Russia. Rather than tap the multinational NATO organization that was created to handle such a threat, the U.S. deploys a two-man Ghost squad to do everything but draft the surrender treaty. In a move to appeal to the more casual Wii owner, Next Level Games ditches the hardcore tactical elements in favor of traditional rail shooting. Players do not control soldier movements save for pointing them to the next cover position, and enemies predictably flood in as soon as you reach your new entrenchment.

Ghost Recon Wii Review

Wii owners have largely been left out of the Tom Clancy shenanigans this console generation. While the Gamecube eventually saw ports of a number of Clancy titles, motion control just hasn't been in the cards for the military themed franchise. Wii gamers had hoped that might change with the announcement of Ghost Recon earlier this year, but in the interest of saving everyone time and trouble, you'll be waiting a while still. Much like the dismal port-in-name-only of HAWX 2 earlier this month, the Wii version of Ghost Recon feels like a cynical attempt to capitalize on the Ghost Recon name with a game that bears little resemblance to a decent game, much less one of Ubisoft's flagship shooters. Ghost Recon takes place in Russia and Northern Europe, as a renewed ultra-nationalist branch of the former Soviet Empire has moved to... you know what, I can't. The story in Ghost Recon is a mish mash of bits and pieces from every other Tom Clancy game this year, save that it doesn't really fit in with the other games particularly well. It's a worn out premise that Ghost Recon Wii does absolutely nothing interesting with, save for throw some offensively bad Russian accents at you as often as possible -- we're talking "American-ski" territory.
