Tiger Woods PGA Tour 13 Review
In hindsight, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12 lacked any real punch. The Masters tournament on Augusta National was a big deal because it was overdue -- more "it's about time" than "what a surprising new feature!" Blame Tiger Woods PGA Tour 13 for this perception. Revered competition on an iconic 18-hole course doesn't even compare to this year's fundamental gutting of the series' most important mechanic: the swing. As deeply troubled as Tiger 13 is, EA Tiburon's strong improvements to the swing of a club will change the way at-home golfers play Tiger from here on out. Total Swing Control is far and away the most meaningful addition to the PGA Tour series since it joined this generation of consoles. Left stick movement dictates 100% of how a shot behaves. Pre-set shot types and shot meters don't exist anymore. Every subtle gesture during a swing affects where the ball goes, so the how and why of each shot falls square on the player's shoulders. In past years, accounting for the lean of the green and smacking the ball as hard as instructed guaranteed a perfect putt. Tiger Woods 13 demands much more on the green, fairway, or tee. A handy white arc around the golfer indicates the ideal backswing form.

Golf games aren't going to appeal to everyone. Yea, if you love golf and gaming, you're probably going to pick it up, but it's hard to make a golf game appeal to gamers who could care less about it. That's why it is good to introduce new ideas and ways to play, and Tiger Woods PGA Tour 13 does exactly that. Tiger Woods PGA Tour 13 featured the embattled Tiger in a more prominent role than before. There is a mode called Tiger's Legacy, where you relive Tiger's most memorable golf moments. You even play as Tiger when he's a toddler. The mode has different chapter of his life and career, and in each chapter are levels where you have to complete a certain challenge. The mode has features voice clips of Tiger talking about those certain moments. The Legacy mode sounds good in theory, but in reality, it misses its mark. Golf has a hard enough time appealing to gamers due to its slow pacing and lack of excitement; adding a mode where I have to hit three balls into a net as a two-year old doesn't help. It also has you play as future Tiger Woods. You play him towards the end of his career when he is breaking and setting records. It is all made up, of course. Unless Tiger actually wins in this fashion, then EA Sports just did some Nostradamus stuff.

Tiger Woods 12 brought a comforting structure to the career mode, but I find this year's new features and overall organization a byzantine maze that serves to bring you right back to where you started. The Masters career structure thankfully returns, but the larger focus is on collecting coins. You earn coins no matter which game mode you play – whether that's the online country clubs, in career mode, or the new Tiger Legacy mode that traces his past and possible future. But like other new features in Tiger 13, the initial deliciousness of this carrot does not last. The importance of coins in the game shapes its entire structure (including the fact that your console needs to be connected online to get them). Although you can approach coin collecting passively, the way they are so tightly embedded in the game shapes how you spend your time playing it. Coins are spent on pins you get from packs in the store. Pins give your golfer boosts in a variety of ways, and have replaced some, but not all, of the bonuses you used to get from clothing and equipment. I wouldn't say that pins are absolutely necessary (the XP-based attribute system still exists as well), but they impart some sweet bonuses, so you'd be missing out if you didn't participate.
