Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12: The Masters remains the top golf sim for virtual swingers. Even though the series embraces the Move motion controller in its PlayStation 3 edition this year, superior controls in the Wii version of the game still make it the best way to play video game golf. This year's sequel builds on the outstanding Wii remote controls from the last two years, which show the MotionPlus attachment at its best, making for lifelike drives for show and putts for dough. The new game also refashions everything around trying to earn an illustrious green jacket at the famous Masters tournament, which lends the proceedings a gravitas that golf fans can't help but appreciate. What you notice when firing up Tiger Woods 12 for the first time is how much the game has been reskinned to take advantage of its Masters theme. This isn't so much a Tiger and PGA game as it is a Masters game, since golf's biggest star and its biggest professional organization take a backseat to the annual tournament hosted by Augusta National Golf Club. The opening cinematic is all about the Masters. The menu screens are loaded with photos of Augusta National.
Even normal people can play on pro golf courses (assuming, of course, they let us in. But, that is another matter). We may not shoot under par on the course like the pros, but in some ways it's the same experience. The bunkers are still made of sand, and the trees seem to squeeze the fairways to narrow strips. By adopting many of the new features of the other versions of Tiger 12, this year's Tiger on the Wii is doing the smart thing by putting Wii gamers on the pro tour and not handcuffing them. Be that as it may, it also comes up just short of those games. The new career structure replicates the road from amateur golfer to seasoned pro, with the end result hopefully being repeated trips to the tailor for the storied green Masters' jacket. In the process, the game's career portion unifies Tiger challenges and the pro tour in the same mode, and includes equipment sponsorships as well. Still, the game smartly keeps Wii-only features like disc and minigolf, which help give this version its own feel apart from the motion controller. This game supports the Wii Balance Board, but I suggest you skip it.
Last year Tiger Woods PGA Tour 11 used the Ryder Cup, an international tournament as its selling point, which was kind of underwhelming. This year EA Sports took another tournament to use as a focal point for Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12, and it's a hell of a lot cooler than the Ryder Cup. It's time for fake golfers to finally get to play in The Masters. Everything in Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12 is themed around The Masters, and the prestigious tournament is included in all three versions of the game. The Xbox 360, PS3, and Wii versions all have different control schemes and game modes, but the big things are the same across all three versions. The entire career mode has been built around working your way up to competing in The Masters. Your character has to progress through amateur leagues, and pass the Q school, a tournament series that golfers have to complete to become pros. After that your golfer competes in a variety of professional tournaments until he or she is invited to The Masters. The new structure is a significant improvement to the career mode. The constant goal of going to The Masters is a nice change of pace from the general tournament structure and all the other major tournaments are in here as well.
