The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings Enhanced Edition

Over the years there have been series that I have bought systems for. The SNES was an obvious choice for the Super Mario World, but from there Final Fantasy took root and I purchased a Playstation for Final Fantasy VII. Likewise I bought the PS2 for Final Fantasy X, and while I didn't like it, I fell in love with that era's Metal Gear Solid games and purchased a PS3 for the Metal Gear Solid 4. I actually loved Metal Gear so much I bought the 3DS at the excitement of the prospect of playing it in 3D and a PSP for MGS Peace Walker. Since then, I've played a lot of acclaimed current-gen games and series without them really sticking, so it's with a little surprise that I write that I will buy whatever console or platform I need to play the next Witcher game that CD Projekt Red makes. . You play as the amnesiac Geralt of Rivia, who is one of the few remaining Witchers, a monster-fighting human, mutated by wizards at a young age to be able to fight unnatural beasts. Geralt becomes wrapped up—frequently vocally against his will—in the politics of Kings, Wizards, Sorceresses, and Free Men vying for control of an area called The Pontar Valley that's the key to controlling The Northern Kingdoms.

The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings (Enhanced Edition) review

The Xbox 360 doesn't really have a shortage of good adventure games right now. Aside from the Fable games and the \"FUS RO DAH”-ness of Skyrim, you've also got Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning, 38 Studios' surprisingly engaging journey with hours worth of gameplay packed into it. But let me go ahead and issue you fair warning right now — you'll want to brush some time aside for The Witcher. In the past few days, we've taken several different routes with this game and have still just scratched the surface over what's being offered here. It's that kind of epic, one that will take you months at a time to discover everything that it has to offer. And that's a good thing. The Witcher 2 has already enjoyed imminent success on the PC, with its complex quests and ludicrously high amount of narrative (there are literally dozens of directions you can go as far as emotional involvement is concerned), and it's great to see the Xbox 360 version follow suit, despite some slight limitations. The game puts you in control of Geralt of Rivia, a powerful monster hunter who's a little iffy on the brain, but still knows his way through a conversation, as well as a fight.

The Witcher 2: Enhanced Edition PC Review

The Witcher 2 is not a normal video game, and it's not a normal fantasy. It subverts the old high-fantasy stereotypes even as it employs them. The elves that you'll meet in Temeria aren't charming, ethereal forest-dwellers, they're guerrilla insurgents raining death on humans from the trees. The dwarves, typically cheerful, hard-working sorts, live in a city of worn rock that runs off the fumes of their former industriousness while its current inhabitants drink, joke and fornicate. The various kingdoms are in the on the precipice of war, led by despotic kings who play their personal vendettas out on the battlefields at the expense of their armies' lives. And who are you, amongst all this? You're Geralt of Rivia, a stoic and distinctly un-heroic monster hunter with a few memory problems and a faintly inexplicable way with the ladies. Though sworn to impartiality on matters of the state, he is drawn into this complex political maelstrom by a series of regicides that brand him a criminal and pull him back into his own, forgotten past. The Witcher 2 is a game for adults, and not just because of all the sex and violence. It expects you to be intelligent and interested, to care about the political machinations, racial tensions and complex history of its world.

The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings - Enhanced Edition

The monster slayer speaks to the soldier with quiet confidence. He signals with his fingers, his yellow eyes shine, and the soldier reveals his secrets without the slayer ever needing to unsheathe his sword. The witcher is gifted for his patience, and now, Xbox 360 owners are similarly rewarded: one of 2011's finest adventures has come to Microsoft's console, and it was well worth the wait. The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings - Enhanced Edition is a treat for the mind and a joy for the senses. This superb role-playing game hits hard, drawing you into its dark fantasy world and requiring you to make difficult choices with palpable consequences. As Geralt of Rivia--the titular witcher--you seek answers in lush landscapes and burning battlefields, where great despair casts long shadows on even the sunniest meadows and lakes. You may have heard about the stupendous visuals of The Witcher 2 on the PC, and probably wonder: how does the Xbox 360 version compare? It should be no surprise that the console release can't match its higher-resolution PC counterpart, which was a standard-setter on that platform. Shadows are less extensive, the draw distance isn't quite as astonishing, and some texture pop-in, jittery transitions, and longer loading times will stand out to anyone who has seen the game running at the highest settings on the PC.

The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings - Enhanced Edition

I've spent the last year holding up The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings as a compelling reason to make the investment in a gaming PC. Its weighty combat, difficult choices with real consequences, and fascinating storylines are some of the best gaming has ever seen. I can no longer lord it over the console masses with this one, though, because this long-in-development Xbox 360 port is just as amazing as the original. It's actually better than it was at launch thanks to the year of patching, refinement, and additional DLC content that this version benefits from. Main character Geralt, the eponymous witcher, is in his own words \"a mutant created for swordsmanship.” As I look back on the game, I'm surprised to find that the \"mutant” part of that statement is the most important. Tearing apart foes with Geralt's acrobatic blade work and magical signs is fun, but taking on the role of a hated and feared inhuman adventurer in this rich world is so much more than that. Choice and consequence in The Witcher 2 isn't the kind of moral absolutism that most RPGs featuring choice typically descend into. It's helping a fanatical anti-human terrorist or an amoral spymaster, chasing down a murderer or saving (ahem) brothel employees, and punishing or profiting from ancient war crimes.

The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings: Enhanced Edition Review

After I scored the PC version 9/10 last year, CD Projekt RED has taken the Witcher 2 to Xbox 360. The Polish publisher originally tested Microsoft's waters during the development of the now-cancelled The Witcher: Rise of the White Wolf. But the real question has never been whether CD Projekt RED could bring their games to console, but how to transition a title so heavily intertwined with PC aficionados. For all intents and purposes, The Witcher 2 isn't built to mimic the action-RPGs that have whet the appetite of the console market so far. Despite having been developed with a controller in mind from the start, the game never embraced the action-based twitchiness of its fantasy cousin Dragon Age 2. Even when it seems to allude to other hack and slash titles by sending out waves of enemies for protagonist Geralt to slaughter, it opts for a less beaten path than many will be used to.A Witcher is tough, but he's not at his prime fighting state until he takes time to prepare for combat, which involves the brewing, meditating, or riffling through various things in your inventory to apply to Geralt. This is one of the things that make up the odd tempo of this world.

The Witcher 2 (Preview)

I hate to confess it, but I'm a bit of a PC snob. When given the choice, I'll often pick a shoddy console-to-PC port over an arguably superior 360/PS3 native version of a game. There's just something about knowing that I'm not playing the best looking version of a game. Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit, for example, played amazingly on consoles, but I couldn't resist the call of the incredibly minor graphical updates sported by the PC version -- even if all my friends played the game elsewhere; and make no mistake, the best parts of the game don't reveal themselves until you start challenging your friend's Autolog records. I walked into a console demo for The Witcher 2 with these biases firmly intact -- only to find myself contemplating abandoning my current PC Witcher 2 playthrough in order to tackle it fresh on the 360. From the graphics to the controls, every change in the Witcher 2 came as a pleasant surprise. The first change to the game comes seconds after pressing Start: A new pre-rendered cinematic fleshes out a scene that's only alluded to in the original game. Developer CD Projekt RED filled this new version with fresh cut-scenes -- including a new ending movie. Obviously, it'll take more than a few new movies to justify dumping the PC version, but these cut-scenes are just the beginning for the additions.

The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings (Preview)

The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings has a lot to live up to, given how much the PC RPG crowd loved the first game. Luckily, with a new game engine, developer CD Projekt Red looks like it can deliver -- both to them and to a new audience. What we're talking about: The Witcher 2, sequel to a 2007 smash hit PC role-playing game based on Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski's novel series of the same name. Players reprise the role of Geralt of Rivia in a continuation of the gritty fantasy story. Where we saw it: Publisher Atari set up private hands-on demos at a San Francisco hotel a couple of weeks ago. Developer CD Projekt Red was also represented by Senior Producer Tomek Gop. What I knew going in: I'd played a little bit of the first game both at PAX 2007 and at home via Steam. The game stuck with me for its almost-turn-based combat system and the infamous sex cards you could collect by sleeping with various female non-playable characters. What you need to know: Point in development cycle: Early beta. CD Projekt hoped to bring a playable beta build to PAX East, but at time of press, no word on whether that's happening.
