The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky

The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky marks the first game in this strategy role-playing series to see a stateside release. Plenty of tactical elements keep combat interesting and often challenge you to outmaneuver foes in unique ways, while a high difficulty level encourages you to stay one step ahead of your opponents. Though the gameplay of Trails in the Sky is rewarding, it's the twisting plot of love and deceit that really draws you in. The enthralling story launches one strange mystery after another, hooking you with rich characters and a romantic subplot. The game opens in the small town of Rolent in the kingdom of Liberl, where a hero's young daughter, Estelle, and her orphaned friend, Joshua, have just completed training to become bracers--civil servants that fight for the good of the people. When Estelle's father, an experienced bracer himself, suddenly disappears, the duo sets out on a quest to find him, unmasking a national conspiracy in the process. The dialogue is a little heavy, but memorable characters keep it lively with amusing banter; you meet a flirtatious bard, a dominatrix gypsy, and a spiky-haired kid with an attitude problem as big as his giant sword, as well as an interesting supportive cast with rich backstories.

Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky

The heroes of this particular Legend of Heroes game want to be “bracers” when they grow up. And no, that isn’t a widget your character wears on his arm, like in World of Warcraft. Bracing is a job, a wholesome mix of body guarding, treasure hunting, monster bashing, espionage, well-intended thuggery, and blue-collar maintenance. Sometimes bracers save the world. Sometimes they’re more like roving freelance janitors with swords. Bracers have a scattered career, and those working conditions lend themselves to explaining why Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky is itself a scattered RPG. It wants to tell the sweeping epic story common to RPGs, but it also wants to invigorate it with lots of fiddly little side quests: whacking this monster or gathering that item or fixing some lamp post, somewhere. How big a problem is this split approach? It depends on what you want from a fantasy adventure game. Trails in the Sky leans well toward the gameplay end of the spectrum. It doesn't fall quite in the realm of a rogue-like dungeon hack or hardcore strategy-RPG, but it’s not a breezy, cinematic sort of game, either. It expects the player to do a lot of extra combat and a lot of active character development, rather than having him put the cruise control on full power.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky

The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky tells a story that's going to instantly be familiar to anyone who's played a Japanese RPG. It picks up with peppy teenager Estelle and her adopted brother Josh joining the Bracer Guild, an international organization that can be hired out by citizens to do work. After the duo's father leaves town on vaguely ominous important business, they set off on a globe-trotting adventure, solving a series of mysterious problems plaguing each region and performing quests for each branch of the Bracer Guild. While its traditional fantasy setting doesn't hold many surprises, Trails in the Sky excels in the way that it tells its story. The tale behind each new town is developed slowly and carefully, with dialogue sequences often lasting far longer than you'd expect even for an RPG. In a lesser game, this would be a serious issue, but the wordiness is used to develop characters in detailed and interesting ways. Instead of just providing exposition, the interactions are charming and subtly reveal bits and pieces of the characters' pasts. When I say this game moves slowly, I'm not joking. The prologue alone – which only barely starts the plot moving – took me an astounding 12 hours.

Review: The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky

It takes a while to really get off the ground, but The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky is an enjoyable JRPG experience that both entertains and innovates. To say that the PSP is a good system for JRPGs is an understatement. Walk into a GameStop or other game retailer and you'll no doubt find an abundance of localized adventures on both the new and secondhand PSP shelves. As a result, it's sometimes difficult for a new entry in the genre to really stand out among its peers on the platform -- and at first glance, Trails in the Sky might not appear to be anything special. But beyond its exterior lies one of the most charming, enjoyable RPG experiences you'll play this year. Trails in the Sky stars the duo of Estelle and Joshua, a sister and (adopted) brother living in the country with their father. Estelle's father is a hero from a war ten years prior and a member of the "Bracers," a wide-reaching fraternal organization devoted to aiding people in need. Estelle has always dreamed of becoming a Bracer like her father, and after passing a test with her brother, she becomes a Junior Bracer and begins to aid the populace of the local kingdom. Soon afterwards, however, her father is called away on an urgent Bracer mission -- only to vanish when the aircraft he was travelling upon vanishes without a trace.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky Review

Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky has been available in Japan for seven years now but it wasn't until now that we Western gamers were finally able to get our hands on it. It represents a branch of the larger Legend of Heroes tree which can trace its origin back more than two decades to the (Japanese release only) Dragon Slayer games. Although Trails in the Sky is the first part of this trilogy to come to North America, its habit-forming gameplay and strong story stake a bold claim for what will no doubt continue to be a very popular series. The game stars teenage siblings Estelle and Joshua Bright, two aspiring young Bracers (knights) living in the peaceful kingdom of Liberl. Just as they graduate and become junior Bracers, their father, legendary Bracer Cassius Bright, is called away by unsettling events and sooner than they expected they're asked to shoulder some very grown-up responsibilities. Trails in the Sky's two-fold focus is storytelling and combat. The first is expertly done through amusing text-only dialog sequences and the second is handled through a turn-based combat system. Once combat initiates, characters have the choice to Move, Attack, use Arts and Crafts (magic or special attacks) or trigger a powerful attack called an S-Craft.
