You may have never heard of Tintin, but it's a big deal in Europe. Since this highly regarded Belgian comic book series created by Herg debuted in 1929, it's been translated into more than 80 languages and has sold more than 350 million comics. Now the famed Belgian reporter is getting his moment in the spotlight Stateside thanks to the new animated film directed by Steven Spielberg. As with any action-adventure film these days, Spielberg's reimagining of Tintin is accompanied by a game adaptation. In this game, Tintin strives to uncover the treasure of the Unicorn, an old ship that was sunk by its own captain. The awkwardly told tale lacks any emotional connection; things just sort of happen, characters just sort of meet, and everything seemingly happens by circumstance. Thankfully, Tintin is an enjoyable character, and Haddock, the descendent of the captain of the Unicorn, is well acted. Those two are enough to keep the game going.Players spend the majority of the game platforming through 2D environments. These levels offer much more than just jumping from platform to platform.
I'm not sure why I expected something good to come from Ubisoft's The Adventures of Tintin, the tie-in game based on the Steven Spielberg/Peter Jackson CGI movie. Maybe it's that the film's trailers look gorgeous, or that the footage I've seen of the game suggested it'd be a stylish platformer. It certainly does look stylish at points, but the game is sadly no different to the majority of movie-licensed titles released every year. Tintin's main problem is the ridiculous amount of repetition, with a handful of gameplay scenarios recycled time and time again. You get some standard 2D platforming sections, along with some incredibly basic combat. Most enemies can be easily dispatched with a few punches, but sneak up behind one and you'll be able to perform takedowns. You can also throw things at them, drop on their heads or make them run into walls. That might sound like a decent amount of options, but it's not - especially when every combat situation is almost exactly the same and crops up over and over again.
