Tekken Hybrid Review

Tekken Hybrid looks impressive at first blush. This three-part collection includes Tekken Tag Tournament HD, Tekken Tag Tournament 2 Prologue, and the movie Tekken: Blood Vengeance. But spend a little time with it and you find a disappointing trio of products that make this frail collection fall flat. The first, and most substantial, inclusion is Tekken Tag Tournament HD. This rerelease of a PlayStation 2 favorite slaps on a high-resolution texture update and calls it a day. For better or worse, nothing else has changed. The classic gameplay is still intact and holds up surprisingly well after 11 years. Naturally, some characters lack the tricks their modern versions have, but it's still interesting to see your favorite fighters' early years and appreciate what they have gained (or lost) since. You can duke it out in Arcade, Survival, or Time Trial mode, but the most unique is still Tekken Bowl. This goofy minigame takes the fighters out of the ring and into a bowling alley. Instead of throwing punches, Tag's stylish scrappers throw crystal bowling balls into golden pins molded to the likeness of Heihachi Mishima. Each character has his or her own bowling style, which is reflected in the behavior of the power meters.

Tekken Hybrid Review

Back in September 1998, issue 36 of the Official UK PlayStation Magazine carried what was easily the most exciting thing to happen in my 13-year-old life at the time: a playable demo of Tekken 3. The accompanying magazine featured an exclusive Tekken 3 review (10/10) alongside a 14-page analysis of the Tekken series. If that wasn't enough, there was an 8-page look at the history of Final Fantasy. It was a brilliant issue. Still, I remember discarding the glossy collated pages almost immediately in favour of playing the Tekken 3 demo. It had that amazing introduction, and you could play as either Xiaoyu or Eddy Gordo - both making their series debuts - in either Arcade or Versus modes. My friends and I played it for weeks, and it's definitely one of my Top 5 favourite demo disc demos of all time (If you're wondering: WipEout 2097, Resident Evil 2, Final Fantasy VIII, Tekken 3 and Oddworld: Abe's Odyssey). Fast-forward to 2011. I've got the occasional grey hair and Tekken Hybrid, a £30 retail release that contains a demo of Tekken Tag Tournament 2 as its headline act, in my PlayStation 3. I wish I could go back to 1998.

Tekken: Hybrid

After dominating Tekken 6 (like a boss), I was kind of eager to see what Namco had next in line for the ongoing fighting series. Yeah, it relies heavily on the tap-tap combos, I get that. Some of the characters – looking at you, Paul Phoenix – can't be taken seriously, but there's still something ludicrously fun about it. While next year will obviously bring big things for the series between the release of Street Fighter x Tekken and Tekken Tag Tournament 2, we have Tekken Hybrid, a decently priced sampler platter that gives you plenty to feast on this holiday. The package consists of three main parts – Tekken Tag Tournament HD, a Tekken Blood Vengeance movie, and an interactive demo (of sorts) for the upcoming Tekken Tag Tournament 2, co-titled Prologue. Let's review each one separately, shall we? First, let's look at the movie. Tekken Blood Vengeance is right about on the same level as the animated Resident Evil: Retribution movie. The plot is a silly mess (as expected), but never to the borderline point of, say, Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within. That said, the fight scenes actually look great, and the character modeling is top notch. Furthermore, the film kind of pays a service to fans and gives hints as to who could be included in Tekken Tag Tournament 2 next year. Plus, I'll say it, it looks incredible in 3D.

Tekken Hybrid Review

Admit it, the PS2 launch lineup sucked. We all went out to buy The Bouncer, we thought that Summoner would be the greatest RPG ever made, we wanted Street Fighter EX3 to be series' true transition into 3D, and we were all disappointed. However, one bright beacon really shone above the rest; Tekken Tag Tournament was a great launch title that really showcased the processing muscle that the PS2 was capable of, offering up great-looking character models and fast, fluid combat. Other games in the Tekken franchise have come and gone, but the one that I always found myself drawn to Tekken Tag Tournament. The excellent tag system was simple and intuitive, feeling unique even compared with other tag-based fighting games like the Marvel vs. Capcom franchise. The game totally holds up, and was something that I would continue to revisit for years. Now that fighter has gotten the HD (and 3D) treatment courtesy of Tekken Hybrid, an HD package that includes a remake of Tekken Tag Tournament, a 3D version of the CGI film Tekken: Blood Vengeance, and a playable teaser for Tekken Tag Tournament 2. Tekken Hybrid Video Review In order to play either of the game components, you must first install them to your hard drive in full.
