Tekken 3D Prime Edition is a joint effort between Namco and Arika, with the latter being responsible for the Street Fighter EX series, as well as the 3D revivals like 3D Classics: Excite Bike. It's abundantly clear that the technical performance was a top priority during development, but overall, the amount of content seems to have suffered as a result. The inclusion of the Tekken Blood Vengeance film is a fleeting curiosity at best and doesn't even come close to making up for the lack of variety in gameplay. Prime's greatest triumph is its smooth frame rate, which does the game's hard-hitting nature proper justice. You don't have to sacrifice speed for 3D, for the most part. Multiplayer is the one exception, in that the 3D mode is automatically disabled. Regardless, the fact that the single-player modes support the full frame rate with 3D enabled is an outstanding achievement. It absolutely sets the bar for any future fighting games on the system. Most of the character models look exactly like their counterparts found in the PSP version of Tekken 6, which is a good thing; both games share the same roster. The 3DS has a slightly lower resolution, but the smaller screen diminishes any discernible differences in the end.
Tekken is a powerhouse in the 3D fighting game realm and in arcades the world over. The franchise has been adapted to myriad platforms, and is no stranger to both consoles and handhelds, ported to everything from the PlayStation to the Game Boy Advance. Now the series is making its debut on the Nintendo 3DS with Tekken 3D Prime Edition, the first 3D handheld iteration of the series. Tekken 3D Prime Edition manages to get the basics right. The combat boasts the fluidity that the series has become known for, and the graphics are excellent. The fighting unfolds at a silky smooth clip regardless of whether or not you have 3D turned on. The fighter roster is also impressive, offering the full cast from Tekken 6. However, aside from the basics, Tekken 3D Prime feels pretty shallow, severely lacking in any modes outside of standard one-on-one fights. You won't find much in the way of unlockables here, a stark contrast to other games in the Tekken franchise. Tekken 3D Prime Edition really nails the fast-paced, fluid action of the series, and it's as well done here as it is on consoles. The 3DS iteration of the series does a great job of capturing the speed and intensity of Tekken 6, along with gameplay elements like Tetsu Power (which beefs up your character's strength somewhat after they've taken a beating).
Tekken 3D: Prime will let you enjoy robot schoolgirl action on your bus to work.Tekken 3D: Prime only made a brief appearance during Namco's gamescom showcase, but it's an intriguing prospect nonetheless. Street Fighter IV and Dead or Alive have both made relatively successful jumps to the 3DS, so it'll be interesting to see whether the King of Iron Fist franchise can now follow suit. It's clear that Namco is striving to make the game as technically impressive as possible. Core to the this is the fact that the action runs at a smooth 60 FPS, regardless of whether you're playing in 3D or not. Most 3DS games drop their frame rate when you enable the stereographic viewing mode (as is the case with SFIV and DoA), but that won't happen here, giving the title an immediate technical advantage.Beyond this, precise details of the game remain scant. There will be over 40 characters available, and producer Katsuhiro Harada has suggested that the fighting engine will be similar to the one used in Tekken 6. There's been no mention of online play yet, but given that both Street Fighter and DoA offered several options in this regard, it would be a major upset if Tekken Prime didn't include similar features.
