Tales of the Abyss
Tales of the Abyss on the 3DS is a well-executed port of a PlayStation 2 game that is just as much a Japanese RPG today as it was when the original released in 2006. It's full of soliloquies and inner thoughts about the meaning of war, and it has a slow-starting story that eventually becomes interesting. Characters grow and change as the plot moves forward, but it's really difficult to stick around. I literally fell asleep on multiple occasions while playing. It's not a game without redeemable qualities, but it was never exceptional, and the years have only made the negatives stronger. The story follows the partially amnesiac Luke as he learns how his fate is tied to saving the world. Establishing the setting and the secondary characters of your party takes up the first ten hours of the game. During that time, Luke reveals himself as a person who is very easy to hate, openly dismissing what other people say or simply refusing to agree with anyone. He grows up through the course of the game, accepting his fate and showing more sympathy toward his allies as the game progresses.Luke's lost memories serve as an excuse to explain everything to the player, but his lack of interest in anything but sword fighting leads to a lot of conversation threads where he just gives up on learning and loudly insults whoever he is conversing with.
Tales of the Abyss 3DS Review
The Tales series does not enjoy the best reputation for global relevancy, mostly because so few of the entries in this twenty-something strong series have been released outside of Japan. Where Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest enjoy a following as devoted outside of their home country as they do within, Tales fanaticism is much rarer in America, and rarer still in Europe. (Except, inexplicably, in France, where it's super popular.) Tales of the Abyss was first released on the PlayStation 2 in 2006 in North America, and never made it any further abroad than that. If you're in Europe, where the game is already out, this 3DS remake of Tales of the Abyss is quite probably the first chance you'll have had to play it. That instantly makes it a lot more interesting for you. Thing is, though, it's six years old, and subscribes to most (if not all) of the irritating conventions that could make Japanese RPGs of the last decade feel like hard work. Don't come to Tales of the Abyss expecting a remake: the reality is much closer to a port. The story follows red-haired, teenaged, aristocratic, amnesiac Luke Fon Fabre on his journey from total obnoxious jerk to slightly less of an obnoxious jerk, helped along the way by a cast of considerably more likeable supporting characters.

UK REVIEW--In its short life, the 3DS has seen a number of 3D-enhanced ports. It's understandable; after all, certain games are given a new lease on life with the 3DS's visual trickery. Tales of the Abyss isn't one of these games. It is, however, just as good a role-playing game as it was when originally released. Packed with a wealth of content, a great script, and a surprisingly dark story, it has a lot to offer even if the central focus of its rerelease leaves a lot to be desired. Set on the planet Auldrant, Abyss tells the story of Luke Fon Fabre, a sheltered sort who, when the game begins, is confined to his family's mansion for his own safety after a sinister kidnapping incident seven years prior. Of course, it's not long before he's thrown from his comfortable life, forced to face up to some startling truths about himself, his folks, and the world at large. What initially starts off as a fish-out-of-water scenario quickly descends into something more sinister, and in true RPG tradition, saving the world becomes the order of the day. Abyss' plot is an enjoyable one, constantly offering up twists and turns, enriched by an excellent cast of characters. There's Tear, Luke's sensible ward, and Jade, the mysterious older necromancer.
