Star Trek Online Review
Cryptic Studios released Star Trek Online only five months after releasing another fully-fledged massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG), Champions Online. Playing Star Trek Online, I couldn't help but get the feeling that Cryptic had their hands just a little too full, because STO feels fundamentally unfinished. Now, almost all MMOs are "unfinished" by definition. The typical MMO is endless, and new content and features are added after the game's release to ensure players always have something to do, but STO is, at its core, missing a lot. The largest glaring omission is basically any sort of introduction on the Klingon side. After seeing a lengthy and frankly pretty cool introduction for starting a Federation character, creating a Klingon character just instantly puts you in their base on Qo'nos. No intro, nothing. It's jarring and leaves you with no real direction. The opening quests are also a bit strange; you fight some dudes in their makeshift arena to earn your first officers, then you're given a whole bunch of player versus player (PvP) quests and are on your own.

A few days ago, we reported on the early hours of Star Trek Online, the new MMO from Cryptic that entered into open beta testing earlier this week. We've since had plenty of time to dig into the space and ground combat, skill system and upgrades, and even play a little bit of the unlockable Klingon faction. Here is our full report along with screens taken from our time in the game.At the end of our last look at the game, which you can read here, we'd completed the introduction as a young Star Fleet officer, having been promoted to our first command during a crisis period for the Federation. Threats lay heavy upon the galaxy war with the Klingons, the reemergence of the Borg, and deeper, more mysterious dangers that seem to be looming on the horizon. The early missions that follow the game's introduction do a fine job of establishing many of the complex and interconnected game systems that govern play. The first and most significant is the skill system the primary way to build up your avatar's abilities and have them rank up. Players acquire skill points by completing missions and defeating enemy forces. Once attained, they need to be spent upon various abilities that improve your in-game actions.

Its two-week mission: to explore the Star Trek Online closed beta, to seek out new skills and new bridge officer powers; to boldly go where no MMO player has gone before.”No one proclaimed that iconic phrase in the recent - and superb - JJ Abrams-directed Star Trek reboot; the film unceremoniously broke from the past; it was sexy, action-packed and girlfriend friendly. And you won't hear it in Star Trek Online, the Cryptic Studios-developed massively multiplayer online game due out in February, either. The success of the movie has spawned a new breed of Trek fan, and they're hungry for more Kirk and Spock and Scotty and Bones goodness. They're not necessarily MMO players, either. Getting that lot to sign up for a STO subscription is Cryptic's most difficult, but potentially most rewarding, challenge.You'd think, then, that STO would be an accessible, warp speed romp through sub space. It is not. What it is, in fact, is pretty complex, and slooooow. Some of its complexity and slowness is welcome. Some is ill-advised. But the game always feels like it's dragging itself through treacle with both arms tied behind its back.

Going boldly where no MMO has gone before, Star Trek Online plans to introduce gamers everywhere to one of the largest, most iconic science fiction universes known to man! We headed down to Los Gatos to chat with the massively multiplayer masterminds over at Cryptic Studios, and walked away thoroughly impressed at the enormous, spanning online universe that the developers had prepared. We also sat down with Star Trek Online's Executive Producer, Cryptic Studios' very own Craig Zinkievich who told us all about the final frontier of space-based MMOs! Check out the video interview below! It takes quite a bit to make a Monday morning worthwhile. I rolled into Los Gatos around nine in the morning, the bags under my eyes undeniable proof of my hectic weekend. I was tired, without coffee, and I'd spent the hour-long car-ride trying to rack my brain for some worthwhile Star Trek trivia. Outside of a few seasons of The Next Generation, the odd reference to space whales and a daily shouting of "KHAAAAN!" I was pretty much tapped dry, hoping that the good folks at Cryptic knew enough about the landmark franchise to carry my dead weight.

Gamers who wish to indefinitely live long in prosper should look no further than Star Trek Online, a space-faring MMO from the team behind Champions Online and City of Heroes. The game starts roughly thirty years after the events of Star Trek: Nemesis and and the peace treaty between Klingons and Star Fleet has all but crumbled completely. Players will take control of a bridge officer on their very own star ship, travelling the galaxy and putting the enemies of Star Fleet in their place. STO includes ship combat, where players enter firefights with enemy ships, and planet-side exploration combat, which plays out 3rd person shooter style a la Mass Effect. The space combat is impressive, and players will have to fully utilize the 3D space to have an advantage over their enemies. Cryptic considers additional officers as "pets" to the players, as their planet-side combat is completely autonomous, though players will be able to change and upgrade their skill sets. Through exploration players will engage in mostly PvE missions, the galaxy's Neutral Zone will allow for PvP combat. Ranking up in Star Trek Online means gaining access to new ships (which in turn grants you more "pets"), new weapons for your ship, and new skills for use in combat and exploration.

Inside a demonstration room hidden deep within the sprawling Cologne convention centre compound, perched on top of a shelf and underneath a giant television, sits a small Spock figurine. Andy Velasquez, associate producer on Star Trek Online, is playing with him. As executive producer Craig Zinkievich introduces Andy and himself to the handful of video game hacks in attendance, Spock is put down, but our gaze remains on the little Vulcan. He's holding a nail in his hand. Really. It's hard to pay attention to the presentation Champions Online developer Cryptic is delivering on its ambitious licensed MMO when there's a toy Spock waving a screw in your face. But it's not impossible, and that's because this is the first time our eyes have been granted the opportunity to cast their sceptical stare at Star Trek Online. From the game's announcement to this point, we've only been able to imagine in our minds how STO will look, as if we were the Starship Enterprise struggling to scan some mysterious outer space gaseous cloud. Now, finally, we're inside the anomaly, we're through the black hole, and STO is laid bare for all to see.
