NCAA 13 Makes Its Dynasty Pitch

By GameInformer, published 05-07-2012

NCAA's Dynasty mode is at the heart of the game's college football experience, and updates for NCAA 13 hope to make the week-to-week recruit pitching process more accurate. Like I've done for NCAA 13's gameplay updates in our previous preview, some of the game's new Dynasty tweaks are listed in this easy-to-read format. Be sure to also check out the new screens in the gallery below as well as the trailer at the end of the page. Last year's game added the coaching carousel and tweaked its recruiting system, and NCAA 13 goes a crucial step further by improving the accuracy of your school's pitch grades to recruits. The basics of the feature are the same, but the team is making a better effort to improve the information that drives those pitches. RECRUITING In NCA...

MLB 12: The Show Preview: You May End Up Purchasing It Twice

By GameInformer, published 26-01-2012

The 2012 baseball season has already delivered more drama than a daytime soap, and players haven’t even reported to Spring Training yet. Ryan Braun, the National League MVP, failed a drug test and may be suspended 50 games. Albert Pujols, the star of the reigning World Series champion St. Louis Cardinals, opted to follow the scent of money to Anahiem rather than defend his title. The Chicago Cubs, a team desperately seeking a solution to a 100-year championship drought, hope former Boston Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein can work his voodoo to remove The Curse of the Billy Goat from Wrigley Field. While video game baseball is free of the doping, betrayal, and the hundred years of sucktitude found in its real-life counterpart, developer Sony Computer Entertainment San Diego is ma...

By GameInformer, published 17-01-2012

Ubisoft said today it has closed its Vancouver development studio, which previously worked on various sports titles for the publisher, including: Pure Futbol for Xbox 360, PC, and PlayStation 3. The studio was previously known as Action Pants before being acquired by Ubisoft in 2009. Action Pants was first formed in 2006. “Ubisoft confirms that we have made the difficult decision to close its studio in Vancouver," a Ubisoft spokesperson told Game Informer. "Unfortunately, we haven’t found the right formula for success for the talented team there. We thank our Vancouver team for their hard work and the projects that they have delivered. "Team members will have the opportunity to consider positions in other Ubisoft studios and we will work with each of them to he...

Kinect Vs. Move: One Year Later

By GameInformer, published 26-12-2011

It's been about one year since Microsoft and Sony both released their respective motion controllers, Kinect for Xbox 360 and Move for PlayStation 3. For sales, Microsoft reported in March 2011 it has shipped 10 million Kinect units worldwide since launch. It has not provided an update since. U.S. retail tracking firm NPD reported this month that 750,000 Kinects were sold during the week of Black Friday. Sony announced at E3 2011 it has shipped 8.8 million PlayStation Move controllers worldwide since launch, but has not provided an updated sales figure since. For a closer look at each platform, Game Informer worked with Electronic Entertainment Design and Research (EEDAR) for data on software, including average review scores, total release count, and release count by genre. By GameSpot, published 21-12-2011

EA Sports' racket sim sequel dated; Novak Djokovic and Maria Sharapova to share cover space with John McEnroe.   Electronic Arts is serving up love-love for Valentine's Day. The publisher today detailed release plans for its upcoming Grand Slam Tennis 2, saying the game would hit store shelves in North America on February 14, preceded by international launches on February 10. (A Japanese launch is expected later in 2012.) GameSpot regrets both the headline and the lead of this article. You deserve better. Beyond the release dates, EA detailed region-specific cover athletes for the game. Most countries will see John McEnroe, Novak Djokovic, and Maria Sharapova adorning the box front, but gamers in France, Spain, and Germany will be getting different cover...

Major League Gaming Sees Record Numbers

By GameInformer, published 12-06-2011

Major League Gaming announced that the 2011 Pro Circuit season was the largest season in e-sports history with more than 3.5 million unique viewers during combined Pro Circuit weekends. The event, held in Rhode Island last month, drew 241,000 peak concurrent online viewers that watched more than 3.5 million hours of video. Viewers came from 175 countries, the highest to date, with USA, Germany, Canada, Sweden, and the UK making up the top five. “Our viewership numbers this year have been staggering and MLG now pulls in larger audiences than several traditional television cable networks,” said Sundance DiGiovanni, CEO of Major League Gaming. “Our live streams of the Pro Circuit National Championships garnered more 18-24 male viewers than Comedy Central, MTV, TBS, and FX ...

MLG 2011 viewership surpasses 3.5 million

By GameSpot, published 12-06-2011

Pro gaming organization says average reach among 18-to-24-year-old males greater than Comedy Central, MTV, TBS, FX.   The Major League Gaming organization handed out more than $1 million to competitors during its just-concluded 2011 season. And while that's certainly a significant chunk of change, the professional gaming circuit appears to have a viewership large enough to justify handing out that much in winnings. Halo: Reach offered the biggest prize package this season. Today, the MLG announced that more than 3.5 million people tuned in online or turned out in person to view the 2011 Pro Circuit season over its eight-month, six-event run. Those viewership figures are a record for the e-sports industry, the organization said. What's more, the MLG's r...

Sony's New Move Adventure Is An Epic Test Of Your Patience

By GameInformer, published 18-11-2011

Sony's foray into HD motion gaming has been stunted by a drought of quality Move titles – or any Move titles, for that matter. When it debuted, Medieval Moves: Deadmund's Quest looked like one of the more promising Move games, an action/adventure title in the vein of – dare I say it – The Legend of Zelda. It won't take long for optimistic gamers to have their hopes dashed. Deadmund's Quest tells a fairy tale-style story of kid prince Edmund, who (along with everyone else in his kingdom) gets turned into a skeleton and must put together a broken amulet to reverse the curse. The music and voice acting goes a long way in selling the story (although Deadmund himself has an annoying, Anakin-esque whine), but the moving comic cutscenes are unforgivably shoddy &...

NBA legend sues EA, NCAA

By GameSpot, published 10-08-2011

Celtic great Bill Russell sues NCAA and EA due to lack of compensation for unauthorized use of likeness in NCAA Basketball 09.   Former Celtic center and University of San Francisco star Bill Russell is suing EA, alleging the unlawful use of his likeness in the Tournament of Legends feature of NCAA Basketball 09. According to a Bloomberg report on the suit, Russell claims EA and the NCAA are violating federal antitrust laws by preventing former student athletes from receiving compensation for commercial use of their image and likeness. Thanks to the combined powers of the Internet, Webcams, and creativity, a world full of bored office workers now has access to some of the most interesting, funny, and downright weird video content at the mere click of a mouse. And when these popular videos all center on a specific theme, we call that a "show"—in some cases, a "channel," depending on who's hosting the videos. Get my drift? But here's the age-old problem: There's just too much content out there. If you aren't an Internet sleuth, there's a pretty good chance you're missing out on all ...

Pick A New Cover Athlete Sidekick For Tiger Woods PGA Tour 13

Updated: 40 best free iPhone games on the planet

By TechRadar, published 23-09-2011

Best free iPhone and iPod touch games: 1-20It's safe to say that Apple's given the gaming industry a square kick in the tender regions. Despite their bluster, dismissing Apple in every way possible, Sony and Nintendo are both clearly concerned by the meteoric rise of iPod touch and iPhone as handheld gaming devices. Although great games are the driving force behind the success of Apple gaming, low prices have also helped. Most 'premium' titles cost six quid or less, and many developers end up in a race to 59p, thereby providing games that'd cost 20 quid on a rival platform for the price of a Kit-Kat.But what if you've spent your last penny on your shiny Apple object of desire? Can you get great games for nothing at all, or is the 'free' section of the App Store full of the kind of games th...

Visual Concepts Dishes NBA 2K12 My Player Mode Details

By GameInformer, published 09-10-2011

After community manager Ronnie Singh released a series of screenshot teasers about the mode last week (see below), today Association mode guru/producer Erick Boenisch posted the hard details about how 2K Sports is re-inventing the mode. Much like EA Sport's Be A Pro mode in the stellar NHL series, this year you skip the boring summer league procession of meaningless games in favor of a rookie showcase. Once you show the GMs what you can do on the court, you attend a series of pre-draft interviews where the GMs ask you questions to get a feel for your personality and contemplate how you would fit into their team dynamic. The example Boenisch used was the Chicago Bulls talking to a point guard recruit. Knowing they have all-world phenom Derrick Rose running the point, they aren't g...

We love making our fans a part of the process and we’ll leave this one up to them.” If you're not typically on a first-name basis with practitioners of mixed martial arts, the five fighters' full names are Frankie Edgar, George...

Microsoft rules out Xbox 360 price cut

By GameSpot, published 22-08-2011

VP Chris Lewis says company isn't feeling pressure to respond to PS3's recent price cut thanks to XBL, Kinect, attach rates.   Arguably the biggest news to come out of this year's Gamescom came from Sony, with the announcement of a $50 price cut for the PlayStation 3. As is often the case following such a move, eyes have turned to how Sony's competitors will respond to the move. For Microsoft's part, gamers shouldn't expect a similar price reduction for the Xbox 360. Microsoft plans to hold firm on the Xbox 360's price for at least a little while longer. Speaking to VG247, Microsoft's vice president of interactive entertainment, Chris Lewis, offered a definitive "no" to the question of whether the company is now feeling pressure to drop the price of th...

SBK X: Superbike World Championship - Xbox360 - GR Review

Unfortunately, that's the same day SBK World Championship was put into production. Quantity over quality may seem like a great bullet point for a game when it costs an average day’s salary, but in this case, no one should be fooled by all the lovely garnishes and trimmings of this moto-salad. The idea of more isjustified, though; it makes for rounded gameplay and introduces new users to the world of competitive motor-sports. Players can spend hours up...

Landon Donovan Again Graces FIFA 12 Cover

By GameInformer, published 08-10-2011

The USMNT star again joins FIFA mainstay Wayne Rooney and newcomer Rafael Márquez on the North American cover. No big surprises here. This marks the seventh straight year Rooney has appeared on the cover of the U.K version of the game, and we previously reported that the highly decorated Manchester United forward would be back despite the allegations that he paid for sex with a prostitute while his wife was preggers. After all, it would be a stunning change in company policy to boot Rooney when EA already kept disgraced philanderer Tiger Woods as the PGA game cover athlete. They did, however, replace controversial FIFA commentator Andy Grey for making sexist comments. L.A. Galaxy star forward Landon Donovan also has a long-standing relationship with EA Sports, previously gracing t...

Madden NFL 12 Demo Now Available

Unfortunately, the teams' rosters do not reflect the recent free agency period (although that will be pushed via an update when the game comes out), so Bears fans should enjoy their last spin with Greg Olsen while they can. This isn't the only chance to get to play Madden NFL 12 early. Subscribers to EA Sports' new Season Ticket can download the entire game on August 26 (before the August 30 release date) – complet...

In Depth: The future of 3D TV content

Kick This Impersonal Trainer To The Curb

A good personal trainer isn’t just knowledgeable about fitness and diet, he or she knows how to make exercise fun and how keep his or her pupil motivated. There are days when even the healthiest gym rat doesn’t feel like exercising. Those are the days when it helps to have someone cheering for you and kicking you in the butt to spur you on. THQ’s new UFC Personal Trainer, on the other hand, is a complete pushover; my best workouts while using the software only happened when I kicked my own ass. On paper, UFC Personal Trainer sounds like the kind of coach you’d want in your corner. At The Top Of Its Game?

By GameInformer, published 07-08-2011

The year after a championship can be tricky. You may be the team to beat, but you still have a long road ahead of you as you try to recapture that magic. Last year, EA came out with a great college football product that captured the feeling of the sport. NCAA 12 builds upon NCAA 11 with a list of improvements, but how much better is it? Going into this review, I was most interested in NCAA 12’s promise to fix the magnet tackles and catches from years past. For the most part, developer EA Tiburon succeeded, yet the game feels much like it always has. The new tackling button doesn’t create unrealistic whiffs, nor does the catch button facilitate unbelievable grabs. You won’t see wide receivers slide across the field towards the ball or tackle animations engage t...

By comparison, EA Sports will have a veritable empty net when it takes the ice this year, after 2K Sports confirmed last month that it will not be fielding a hockey game in 2011. Steven Stamkos adds one more accolade to his shelf. Today, EA Sports said that its hockey season will commence with NHL 12 in September. When it arrives for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, Tampa Bay Lightning center Steven Stamkos will appear as the cover athlete on the game's packaging. Drafted first over...

Medieval Moves Raises The Dead

By GameInformer, published 13-06-2011

The PlayStation Move didn't get the attention it got last year because of the debut of the Vita, but that doesn't mean that developers aren't thinking of new games for the Move. Medieval Moves: Deadmund's Quest is being developed by Zindagi Games, the people behind PlayStation Move's Sports Champions. This experience will surely help the studio in this action/adventure title. Unlike some previous Move games, players won't be shuffling between discrete minigames, but instead enjoy a full, seamless experience. When the evil Morgrimm invades Prince Edmund's castle with an army of skeletons, Edmund himself is turned into a skeleton. Regardless of this new lease on "life," Deadmund, as he is now called, must still stop Morgimm. Deadmund's Quest featu...

Even in repose, Mark Ingram suffers from motion blurring. EA Sports' "U Want ME" Facebook campaign was the first of its kind for the NCAA Football franchise and saw more than 140,000 votes cast. Ingram's victory came over Auburn...

A Game That’s Lacking Some Skill Moves

By GameInformer, published 04-06-2011

Pro Evolution Soccer 2011 is one of the best representations of 3D on the handheld, but that’s not what I find interesting about the game itself. Rather, I like how it attempts to be like its console brother – and actually goes some way to achieving this goal. Intentions and execution, however, are different matters.Once you change out of the default, player-focused camera (which is horrible), Pro Evolution fans will immediately recognize much of the gameplay they’ve enjoyed on the big consoles. Perhaps that’s part of the beauty of the sport – its relatively simple at its core. On the other end of the spectrum, this game attempts to replicate some of the sports’ sophistication on the pitch by offering feints (no linked feints like the console version, h...

A Dream Roster Meets A Lack Of Gameplay Variety

By GameInformer, published 29-03-2011

Vince McMahon’s WWE is the only big-name game in town when it comes to pro wrestling options, and the Smackdown vs. Raw series has been the only real choice for gamers in recent years. Thanks to THQ San Diego, wrestling fans that want a little more silliness and a lot less realism now have another option. WWE All Stars takes the biggest names of the '80s and '90s and pits them against the superstars of today, allowing sports entertainment fans to create numerous dream matches. One look at the roster reveals a who’s-who of the last three decades of wrestling. All-time legends like Bret Hart, Stone Cold Steve Austin, and The Rock populate the Legends side of the character select screen, while today’s best like Randy Orton, CM Punk, and The Miz round out the other ha...

Middle of the Pack Racing

By GameInformer, published 29-03-2011

It’s hard to be a startup team in NASCAR when you have to go up against the Hendricks and RCRs of the stock car world. Eutechnyx might not face NASCAR video game competition on the console side, but it does face an uphill battle as a fresh face. The developer’s uneven first outing is filled with good and bad laps, and has to resign itself to some morale victories. The basic driving experience gives casual NASCAR fans an enjoyable ride – dial up the difficulty, play with the car settings, hit different track lines, and go back-and-forth with the likes of Jeff Gordon or Clint Bowyer. Eutechnyx smartly includes some HUD additions that some may dismiss as unrealistic (you can turn them off anyway), but I like them. The radar gives you an idea of who’s around you so you...

Kinect bundles outselling PlayStation Move bundles 5-to-1 - Analyst

By GameSpot, published 03-12-2011

Wedbush's Michael Pachter says under one-fifth of PS3 sales included Sony's motion controller--while two-thirds of Xbox 360 sales included its camera-based system.   Yesterday, the NPD Group released its sales figures for the month of February. Though the research group no longer releases hardware sales numbers, Microsoft was all too happy to announce that the Xbox 360 had sold 535,000 units during the month. Sony did not release sales figures, but in a note to investors, Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter revealed that the company's console sold 403,000 units--51,000 units less than Nintendo's Wii. The Kinect is outselling the Move 5-to-1 in bundle form, says Michael Pachter. While enlightening, the console sales aren't the whole story. According to Pach...

Pro Evo Soccer kickoff set for 3DS launch

By GameSpot, published 02-10-2011

North American version of Konami football sim hits March 25, two days before Nintendo's new handheld goes on sale. While Nintendo has been cagey about its own lineup of day-one launch titles for the March 27 North American launch of the 3DS, its third-party partners are gradually filling in the gaps. Capcom has confirmed Super Street Fighter IV for launch, while Electronic Arts committed to having its Madden NFL series represented straight out of the gates. One more title can be added to the list, as Konami has confirmed that Pro Evolution Soccer 2011 3D will debut in North America on March 25. That's a whole mess of Messi. While PES 2011 3D has now been confirmed for the US and Japanese launches of the 3DS, the game is expected to trail the system's debut i...

Kitchen Counter Tech: 25 Essential Culinary Gadgets Through the Ages

By MaximumPC, published 02-03-2011

Mission-Specific Cooking Gadgets: The 25 Best, Worst, and Weirdest of All Time Give a pro chef the right ingredients, and he can make a mind-blowing meal with tools no more fancy than a sharp knife and a hot stove top. And then there’s the rest of us. We need cooking gadgets—because we wouldn’t be able to extract the juice from an orange without the help of electrical power, or cook a hot dog without a custom weenie-roaster. There’s something intrinsically kitschy about cooking gadgets. They’re just so damned mission-specific, performing a single, specialized task, often in the service of the most lowbrow or faddish of culinary trends. Think about it. A 10-inch chef’s knife isn’t kitschy. It can cut, chop, slice, dice, and mince. It’s a work horse. But a melon baller? It os...

According to the simulations provided by EA Sports to ESPN, the running game will be the deciding factor in the AFC Championship matchup between the Pittsburgh Steelers and New York Jets. Though both Ben Roethlisberger and Mark Sanchez have decent outings, Steelers running back Rashard Mendenhall steals the spot light. The former Illinois standout rushes for two touchdowns, including the game-clinching fourth quarter scamper, in a hard fought 21-19 Steelers win. The Cold War showdown between bitter NFC North rivals the Chicago Bears and Green Bay Packers also looks close when you glance at the box score, but after the Packers jumped to an early lead in the first quart...
