Next-gen gamingPS4 release date, news and rumours Say hello to Sony's newest games console. Not ready to shepherd in the next generation with PS4 quite yet, the Japanese tech giant instead opts for a trimmed-down take on the PlayStation 3 - a 'super slim' model that makes even the last iteration of the console, the PS3 Slim, look a bit chunky.Sony is obviously a fan of Apple's 'The New iPad' naming convention, but we're going to go ahead and stick with 'PS3 super-slim.' After all, it's 20% lighter than the 2009 PS3 Slim at just 2.1kg, and 20% smaller too.The internal architecture's been completely redesigned to facilitate the shrink, although the only real change in terms of specs comes in the storage department. There's a 12GB SSD model available for 185/AU$299.95 (about US$300) with an optional 250GB dedicated HDD, coming to the UK on October 9, with the external HDD due on October 12. Available in Australia now, we're still waiting for Sony to confirm a US release for this entry-level model. The larger capacity 500GB model arrives in stores on September 28 in the UK and October 30 in the US, priced at 250 in the UK, $399.95 in Australia and bundled with Assassin's Creed III for $300 stateside.
Sony's remodeled PlayStation 3 (120GB) dropped a couple of dress sizes and $100 off the price of its predecessor, the original PlayStation 3. For $300, you can now have a first-class, BD-Live capable Blu-ray player (see our home theater review) with 1080p HDMI output, integrated Bluetooth and 802.11g, an upgradable 120GB hard drive, gigabit ethernet, 7.1 channel Dolby Digital audio support, and Sony's monstrously powerful custom multiprocessing CPUs. Oh, and it plays PlayStation 3 games, too. The most significant internal change is that switch from an 80GB hard drive to a 120GB unit. On its exterior, the PS3 (120GB) replaces the original version's glossy black finish with a duller black matte finish, and it smoothes out its predecessor's design angles. Fingerprints still show if your hands are oily, but far less than before. My hefting, shaking, and squeezing of the unit led me to conclude that it was just as solid as the original. The PS3 (120GB)--aka the PlayStation 3 Slim--weighs 7 pounds and measures 11.4 by 11.4 by 2.6 inches. Those specs indicate that the new model is roughly 33 percent smaller and 36 percent lighter than the original; but because it's a hair deeper, it will continue to occupy about as much space as a standard rack-style DVD or Blu-ray player.
The PS3 Slim is a slimmed down PS3 console. It has an identical spec, but beyond use as a games console, it can also play Blu-rays – we have already tested this feature - and a multitude of other multimedia files. Is it the ideal multifunction product, stealing a march on the best media players? While you can copy files directly to the console, there is a one limitation. It uses the FAT32 file system which means files cannot be larger than 4 GB. It’s the same problem if you connect an external hard drive or USB key to the device: you have to divide up any films that weigh in over 4 GB so that they can be copied onto the peripheral. The way around this is to use networking, via the UPnP protocol. For that, you first have to share the files with a compatible piece of software (Windows Media Player and Tversity are two examples). Then you can play recognised multimedia files, including files bigger than 4 GB. The PS3 navigation interface is called XMB. Very rapid, the graphics are are well-designed and thought out. You navigate using a joystick which can throw you off a little but soon becomes very practical. For those who prefer a remote, you can purchase one separately.
The long-awaited PS3 Slim is finally out, and has been on sale since late August. It has the same specification as the original PlayStation 3, but in a smaller and sleeker form factor. That’s a real advantage if you want the PS3 to fit in smaller spaces. But as a Blu-ray player, what real improvements does it have compared to the original PlayStation 3? The GUI on the PS3 Slim looks just like the one on the PS3 ... just like most other features. To give you the short-and-quick answer, the PS3 Slim is an almost perfect copy of the older PS3 – which some have seen fit to call the “PS3 Fat.” Here’s what’s different about the PS3 Slim, in five points. For everything else--including the graphical interface, the display quality, the upscaling of SD sources and the handling of the joystick--the performance is strictly identical on the two consoles. Read our test of the first-generation Sony PS3 to find out more.
Priced right, Sony's slim-line PlayStation 3 (120GB) bundles the top-notch features of the earlier PlayStation 3 into a smarter, sleeker package.
Nearly three years after the introduction of the original budget-busting PlayStation 3, Sony has put both the system and its price tag on a diet. The appropriately named PlayStation 3 Slim shaves over an inch off the width of the previous system while keeping the same processing power intact. Sony also drops the price by $100 from the previous model, and bumps storage up from 80GB to 120GB. But the PlayStation's distinctive piano black shell also disappears, along with the ability to run third-party operating systems. Has Sony cut too deep and turned the caviar of the console world into a tuna fish sandwich? Let's have a closer look and find out. As the name suggests, most people will notice the biggest differences between the new and old PS3 right out of the box. The smaller dimensions on the Slim make it feel like less of a behemoth in most home entertainment systems, but on the same hand, it doesn't come anywhere near the diminutive size of the Wii. It's improved, but the difference in person may look less drastic than the marketers would have you believe.
Back in 2004, four years after first launching the PlayStation 2, Sony brought out a new, much more compact PS2. Timed to come out just as Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas was hitting stores, the redesigned console helped breath new life into the PS2 franchise. It remains on store shelves today--you can pick one up for just $99. Needless to say, Sony hopes that a trimmed down--and less expensive--PS3 Slim will similarly invigorate sales of the PlayStation 3, which has lagged behind the Nintendo Wii and the Microsoft Xbox 360 and has taken some of the luster off the PlayStation brand (even as earlier versions of the PS3 received high marks from this publication). To many industry observers, the Slim PS3 represents a moment of reckoning for the PS3--a chance at redemption if you will--and clearly some serious engineering has gone into the creation of Sony's latest black gaming box and media player. If you're a fan of the PS3 or have been sitting on the fence, waiting for its price to drop to $299, the good news is that from a features standpoint, the 120GB Slim PS3 is nearly identical to the 80GB and the 160GB "fat" PS3 models that Sony's in the process of phasing out.
