Sonic Generations Review

It's almost jarring to see SEGA finally deliver on their generation-old promises that SEGA "does what Nintendon't." They have finally re-purposed Sonic as a platforming mascot that is, for the first time in ages, wildly definable by its own merits instead of trying to play catch up, tagalong or sorority sister with its mustachio partner in crime. Instead, Sonic Generations decides to ditch the plight of spending decades chasing Mario's happy go lucky hop and bop, vacational romps through paradise in favor of a vigorously fast and unforgiving speed drive through dystopia that honors expertise over bubbly luck. The graphics for the PC version of Sonic Generations are noticeably better than the console counterparts. We tested the game on a fairly hefty system, at full specs. Sonic Generations isn't a particularly labor intensive game, but there are not very many options for lowering the specs, so keep that in mind. Likewise sonic Generations is clearly a console game ported to PC, as the game is designed to be played with a gamepad. There aren't even any control options for mouse and keyboard (though you can technically play with a keyboard). Sonic Generations taps into the nostalgia of two decades of Sonic fans, who, against all odds, have shown their love for the blue blur.

Sonic Generations Review

My, what a rough life for Sonic for Hedgehog. It started out great, but then he was in a spate of adventures in the years afterward that were usually middling to awful. The good news is that the PC was spared of the more recent failures, but Sega's brought Sonic back to the platform with Sonic Generations, a game meant to look beyond the bad parts of Sonic's history and simply celebrate 20 years of games that were, honestly, not all bad. And this isn't all bad, either. Generations is a tale of two Sonics: the older, smart-assier one we know now, and the pudgier, cuter one from the early '90s. It turns out an inter-dimensional monster called the Time Eater is altering time and space, and it's up to the dual hedgehogs to revisit the past and undo the damage. Honestly, it's a weak set-up that could be an episode of a Sonic cartoon, but story isn't so necessary here -- in fact, after starting a new game, you jump in as Classic Sonic in Green Hill Zone, because that's how it should be. Let's not dwell on why all you need to do to restore the worlds is simply complete their levels. If it works, it works. Fittingly, Generations is structured like an old Sonic game: several worlds with two "acts" to play.

Sonic Generations

It's been years since I could honestly say that I've felt a Sonic game has nailed everything it's set out to do – even last year's Sonic Colors, while brilliant in its own way, felt like it was missing a small something. This something comes in the form of a pudgy, short hedgehog we all fell in love with 20 years ago – Classic Sonic. Generation's inclusion of the classic Hedgehog gameplay is a masterstroke and is a perfect compliment for Modern Sonic's almost-racing game style. The game's plot, while not deep by any means, is passable and puts the focus where it needs to be – on our two favorite hedgehogs. A mysterious force captures Sonic's friends and dumps Sonic off in limbo, so it's up to the Blue Blur (and his past self) to figure out what happened and save his friends. There's no soppy hedgehog/human love stories, no talking swords, and no ridiculous premise. It's just Sonic saving the universe by doing what he does best – running really, really fast. It helps that the only other speaking roles in the game are (as they were in last year's Colors) Tails and Dr. Robotnik/Eggman. Not to spoil anything, but the game's ending reveals an interesting paradox concerning Sonic 4.
