Skylanders Spyro's Adventure Review

If I was 8-years-old, I would be losing my flippin' mind over Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure. It would be at the top of my birthday and Christmas list, and I would collect every one of those figurines, much to the chagrin of my parents who would have to pay for it. And it's because Skylanders takes a simple game and makes it interesting with some cool technology. Unfortunately the high price and gimmick might be the reason many don't play. As a video game, Skylanders doesn't tread new territory. Drawing inspiration from the LEGO games, Skylanders offers a co-op action game for the under 10 crowd. You run around to various levels – castles, mines, forests, pirate ships – beating up hoards of enemies. Oh, and there's nothing Spyro about this. Sure, he's a playable character, but he never talks, and everyone else just calls him a Skylander. The word "Spyro" is never spoken. Hey anyone remember Street Sharks? He is way cooler than that crap. The action is engaging though, and it's fun enough for older siblings or parents to play along. In fact, Skylanders almost demands co-op play, as about halfway through the difficulty spikes up dramatically.

Skylanders Spyro's Adventure (Preview)

Activision and Toys for Bob have combined collectible figures and video games in a unique way to make their upcoming Wii title, Skylanders Spyro's Adventure, possible. Read on for our thoughts on the game and the tech behind it. What we're talking about: Skylanders Spyro's Adventure, the upcoming game/toy hybrid from Activison and developer Toys for Bob. Where we saw it: A couple members of Toys for Bob came to GamePro's office to show us their product. What you need to know: Point in development cycle: The game is slated for a fall 2011 release, and the code we viewed was in pre-alpha. A few of the figurines were also unfinished, though they looked incredibly detailed. My take: If I could show my ten-year-old self the "magic moment" of putting a Skylanders figurine on the portal and watching it come to life on the screen, I think mini-me would be floored. Toys for Bob are truly doing some incredible things with the tech behind Skylanders Spyro's Adventure, and it's a pretty clear indication of what the future holds for toy/game hybrids. Even beyond the fact that the game is aimed at a younger demographic, I can't imagine gamers of all ages being unimpressed with the cool hybrid tech the Skylanders devs have created here.
