Sesame Street: Once Upon a Monster

When making an education-based game for kids, developers usually have to draw a pretty restrictive line. They have to make sure that these children are learning something from their games, but as a result, they often sacrifice what makes it so entertaining to begin with. We've seen this in countless examples over the years, including games for Wii, NES, Sega Genesis, and more. You'd think someone would be able to cross that line and make something that feels like it can relate to kids and still find a way to be fun. And so we have. Double Fine, the team behind such mature-themed content as Brutal Legend and the recently released XBLA game Trenched (now named Iron Brigade), has teamed up with Sesame Street – an unlikely partner – to produce a worthwhile, new effort for Kinect that will keep kids pleased, as well as a few parents. Sesame Street's Once Upon a Monster is a magical little affair, one that makes fine use of Microsoft's motion device when it comes to mini-games and moving forward in the interactive stories. More companies should follow this example. The story begins with Cookie Monster and Elmo bumping into each other on Sesame Street and looking over a monster storybook.

Sesame Street: Once Upon a Monster Review

This review is brought to you today by the letter G. So what words start with the letter G? G is the first letter in the word "generations." Sesame Street's appeal stretches across the decades thanks to the show's seemingly endless well of charm, wholesomeness, appealing characters, and goofy humor. Once Upon a Monster taps into all of what makes the show an enduring success. Its Kinect-based gameplay is simple but endearing, and its activities are extremely well geared towards entertaining young children. It's not quite a "great for kids of all ages" game--the very young will find some of it too complex, while young-at-heart adults will find it a little too simplistic--but for preschoolers and their parents or caregivers, it's a great way to enjoy some quality interaction with some of Sesame Street's most beloved characters. G is for Grover. The blue-haired muppet who has long been a series regular makes a guest appearance in Once Upon a Monster, but it's really Cookie Monster and Elmo's show. The colorful pair are the anchors in this adventure, which takes place away from Sesame Street itself. All of the action happens inside a storybook, with both Cookie Monster and Elmo interacting with the various monsters within the book.

Sesame Street

I honestly have no idea how I got through the first few video games I played during my childhood. I'm not just talking about the NES stuff from the mid-'80s, but games like the Smurfs for the Atari 2600. Assuming my memory is correct, there's a random fence that, if you didn't jump over in precisely the right way, meant instant game over. And somehow, I had put up with that damn instant death fence -- again and again. I'm not sure whether I did so because I was a very perseverant child, or if I simply had nothing better to do than try-and-try-and-try again. Back then, video games for kids were simple, crude, and a bit on the cruel and unrelenting side. Nowadays, kids games have dialed down the cruelty to the point where failure is not only not an option, but it's not really even acknowledged. But even though they've become easier, they have not progressed much in terms of being less janky. It sort of makes sense for some Flash game on a NickJR or Disney XD website to look like it was made in some high schooler's programming class, but when you see uninspired characters, repeated assets, and horrible glitches in a retail game meant for a home console, it's downright disheartening.

Sesame Street: Once Upon a Monster Review

I'll start by saying if you're currently reading this review, then Sesame Street: Once Upon a Monster likely isn't for you. If you're a hardcore frequenter of IGN looking for your next big thing to use with your fresh Kinect sensor, that one killer app that will make the 150 dollar investment you made last year all worth it, then keep on waiting. However, if you represent the other faction of the Kinect audience, those looking for a way to get their children involved and gaming, Once Upon A Monster makes for a great investment of your time and money. Sesame Street: Once Upon a Monster has players working alongside Cookie Monster, Elmo, Grover, and a host of other well-known characters from the Sesame Street roster. You begin your adventure by celebrating the birthday of a newfound friend, a monster named Marco. Teaming up with Elmo and Cookie Monster, you set out on giving Marco the best birthday EVAR (deliberate misspelling), dancing with him and even dressing him up in some kooky outfits. Sesame Street: Once Upon A Monster Video Review The mini-games present in the game offer a great amount of variety. One moment you'll mimic the poses of on-screen characters while the next you'll run through the woods on a monster's back only to move on to waving your arms in the air to hit a pair of drums to the beat.
