Resident Evil Revelations Review

Over the past decade, the Resident Evil series has changed significantly. Sensing the need to evolve its iconic franchise alongside modern gaming, Capcom made several alterations to the formula, adjusting elements that were in dire need of an upgrade. However as time went on, it became increasingly apparent that Resident Evil was changing in one particular way that few fans wanted. The franchise had shed the very concept that made it so popular in the first place. Gone was the idea of survival horror, of attempting to overcome great odds with few resources in terrifying situations. Resident Evil Revelations attempts to steer its series back towards its roots, to recapture an atmosphere of terror that slowly slipped away as the franchise aged. The game's quest to reconcile its classic and modern legacies mostly succeeds, setting benchmarks for the Nintendo 3DS while still struggling in some key respects. Revelations is without a doubt the best looking 3DS game so far. In fact it's difficult to see anything that will best Capcom's efforts anytime soon. Incredible character models, creature designs, environmental effects and lighting create spectacular settings for some of the franchise's most memorable moments.

Resident Evil: Revelations

I find it somewhat serendipitous that Capcom just announced the Sony exclusive characters for Street Fighter X Tekken as I write this review, for it provides me an interesting juxtaposition to observe. If you followed the recent news for that game, you would have seen that the SF X Tekken Mega Man is the fat '80s box art version. Both the Resident Evil and Mega Man franchises are in a precarious position these days, as fans clamor louder and louder to make their demands known—and Capcom has thus far turned a deaf ear. In the case of Mega Man, all the fans really want is just to have Mega Man back in his tried-and-true form. But the Big C's attitude of late, coupled with the recent character reveal, have amounted to a big old middle finger. With RE, the fans want a break from action-horror and a return to survival-horror. While the news about RE6 make the prospect dubious for that game, the good news is that they're at least delivering the survival-horror goods in the here and now with Resident Evil: Revelations. It doesn't quite maintain the same tense level of dread throughout, but when it does—and it does for the bulk of the story—the game is fuckin' scary.

Resident Evil: Revelations

Resident Evil: Gaiden, released for the Game Boy Color back in 2002, featured characters from the series fighting zombies on a cruise ship as they searched for the origins of a new viral threat. It was terrible. Considering that the setting for Resident Evil: Revelations is nearly identical and it's also on a handheld device, any hesitation on your part is understandable. I'm here to ensure you that Resident Evil: Revelations is one of the finest entries in the franchise to date. The game packs improvements to the series' reliable gameplay, impressive visuals, and a story that puts the last two main series entries to shame. Revelations is enough to please both diehard fans and 3DS owners looking for the next system-defining title. The story picks up between the events of Resident Evil 4 and 5. Jill, Chris, and their new partners seek to uncover the truth about the destruction of a city called Terrorgrigia and combat a brand new virus. We also learn more about the BSAA (Bioterrorism Security Assessment Alliance), the previously enigmatic organization Chris and Sheva work for in Resident Evil 5. Shedding light on this organization, the FBC (Federal Biohazard Commission), and the leaders behind them brings new weight to the series' sagging story.

Resident Evil: Revelations Review

Resident Evil: Revelations splices the survival horror DNA of classic Resident Evil with the new, brisker strain of Resident Evils 4 and 5. The result isn't an Umbrella-style crime against nature, but a healthy, happy hybrid: an optimum mix of tense, creepy exploration and stop-and-shoot action, telling a tale of bioterrorism and unwise genetic meddling aboard an abandoned ocean liner. It's also lovely to look at and, with a 10-hour story campaign, it's a meaty slab of a single-player adventure. Veteran monster mashers Jill Valentine and Chris Redfield return, both in the service of the Bioterrorism Security Assessment Alliance (BSAA), but not as partners. The game is set after Resident Evil 4 and before 5, in the wake of a bioterrorist attack in which the high-tech island city of Terragrigia gets obliterated. Chris is paired with the flirty Jessica Sherawat, and Jill with Parker Luciani, a husky BSAA agent with a dubious Italian accent. The story plays out in TV-style, bite-sized episodes, each sandwiched between a "previously on Resident Evil: Revelations" recap and a cliff-hanger ending. It's a fun format for the compellingly hammy melodrama of Resident Evil tradition.

Resident Evil Revelations

We live in a world where the increased processing power of dedicated gaming portables can bring some of our wildest handheld video game fantasies to life; and in many ways the scope and scale of Resident Evil Revelations serves as proof of those ambitions. The goal seems simple enough: Take the blockbuster formula of RE and make it portable. But in the end the level of execution on that promise remains key, and the limitations of the format can undo the boldest attempt. While distilling any blockbuster franchise down to a portable experience seems like a daunting task (especially for Resident Evil), Revelations proves the idea's potential in this new age of handhelds; but it also brings to light some of the limitations inherent to the platform. Adhering closely to the mold of Shinji Mikami's Resident Evil renaissance title RE4, Revelations follows the survival-action model of the past two console installments. The controls, perspective, and mechanics support the idea that Mikami's influential installment is the future of RE; but there are also indications of iteration and refinement present at the same time. The ability to move and shoot lifts a huge burden from the series; and one that's stood out prominently over the past few years. Hallelujah, right?

Resident Evil Revelations Review

Like the mutated viral strains that inhabit its many undead bodies, Resident Evil keeps adapting. As a result, each new game has to ponder the past, present and future of the series. Should the next Resident Evil be survival horror? Should it be modern-style action? Should the camera really been so fascinated by ladies' bums? Resident Evil: Revelations, the fourth handheld outing for the series, only knows how to answer that last question: and on that front (or rear?), it's a resounding yes. Other decisions are thrust onto the cartridge with less conviction. Unable to choose between the balls-out action of Resident Evil 5 and the classic tension of the original games, Capcom settles on a haphazard combination of styles that never quite works.Much of Revelations takes place aboard the Queen Zenobia, a luxury cruise liner that resembles the original Resident Evil's iconic Spencer estate mixed with The Crystal Maze's Ocean zone. The Queen Zenobia - designed by George Trevor, for fans of the series' tangled lore - originally recalls all that is cherished about the series' vintage titles: ornate architecture, gentle puzzling, and the back-and-forth traversal of an unwinding map as your inventory swells with an abundance of keys, security cards and elaborate trinkets.

Resident Evil: Revelations (Preview)

If there's one Capcom series that needs a shot in the arm (and doesn't have the words "Mega Man" in the title), it's Resident Evil. Despite overcrowding the survival horror genre with a barrage of titles for almost every platform back in the day, Resident Evil 4 signaled a serious revival of ideas and genuine scares. Yet, somehow, those same ideas appear misplaced in Resident Evil 5, the next big sequel which chose to focus primarily on cooperative play and daytime survival horror. Either by carefully choreographing two separate adventures into a cohesive whole la Resident Evil 2, or changing the rules of over-the-shoulder style terrors entirely with RE4, Capcom always finds a way to keep you on edge in a Resident Evil installment. In fact, some of the scariest scenarios of the series happen when you're alone, and to that effect the latest demo for Resident Evil Revelations -- available on the 3DS eShop in Japan only -- starts out on just the right note. I'm by myself in a dingy-looking bedroom and in control of Jill Valentine. For those who need a refresher: Jill has survived the zombie outbreak at Spencer Mansion in the original game and the madness of escaping a zombie-filled Raccoon City in Resident Evil 3, but Revelations marks her first appearance since some RE5 DLC a few years ago.

Resident Evil Revelations Preview (Preview)

Can Resident Evil: Revelations make up for Mercenaries 3D?While The Mercenaries 3D had its moments, the overall package was as scrawny as one of Resident Evil's classic skinless dogs. There's long been an assumption that of the two Resi games Capcom announced for the 3DS, Revelations would be the "proper" one. It's an assertion that Capcom itself is doing little to dispel; Mercs 3D may have been written off as a stop-gap game, but if that helps to make Revelations seem like a grander, more appetising prospect... well, so much the better. And to be fair, there's already evidence that Revelations will be the full-fat Resi game we wanted in the first place. In contrast to the blink-and-you'll-miss-it E3 demo (the same one later bunged on the Mercs 3D cart), Capcom's latest presentation showed off a wide range of features. We'll be getting no less than four playable characters in the main campaign: a pair of new heroes alongside Chris Redfield and Jill Valentine. There's a new mechanic that requires players to scan the environments for hidden items; it looks a bit gimmicky, but at least it's a fresh idea.

Resident Evil: Revelations (Preview)

Finally, after releasing the lackluster Resident Evil Mercenaries 3D, and cooling off on promoting Operation Raccoon City, Capcom decides to show off some more Resident Evil: Revelations. During our demo, I get to play as series veteran Chris Redfield in a fresh section of the upcoming horror-survival-game. Together with his new partner Jessica, Chris investigates a plane crash on a snowy mountain-plateau;after a few steps down a snow-covered path, they find themselves standing inside the badly damaged plane-wreck and discover the dead pilot. Only after scanning the dead body and finding an important item, can Chris continue adventuring. Here, the new scanner-system comes into play: You select the necessary gear via touchscreen and check the dead body thoroughly Metroid Prime-style. Only then will Chris find the aforementioned item, and he only picks it up after doing a second search after the scan! If you merely check the body without doing a scan first, you won't find anything except a prompt suggesting that a scan can reveal more information. I'm curious to see whether this new scanning element ends up being an interesting gameplay addition, or a cumbersome gameplay crutch that needlessly draws out the game's exploration aspect.

Resident Evil: Revelations (Preview)

Last year, Capcom was quick to announce not one but two separate Resident Evil games for the upcoming Nintendo 3DS: Revelations and The Mercenaries 3D. While The Mercenaries is currently on target for a Spring release and Revelations sometime after that, it was Revelations that got a dedicated booth at this weekend's Nintendo World 2011 event, while The Mercenaries was relegated to a display-only demo unit in the corner of the hall. Despite this reversal, I feel there are far more unanswered questions surrounding Revelations than its sister project. Much of Resident Evil: Revelations is a throwback to older titles in the series, given what Capcom showed in the brief demo this weekend. The lead characters are Chris Redfield and Jill Valentine, stars of the original Resident Evil. The action-oriented tactics of Resident Evil 4 and the cooperative play mechanics of Resident Evil 5 are gone. In their place is a more deliberately-paced, solitary adventure. The demo began with Jill alone on a ship. The impact of the graphics, not just the 3D effect, was striking.
