Rayman Origins
Well, Rayman doesn't actually lead a nation in his latest outing, but I'd certainly vote for him and his cabinet of cadres after the absolutely delightful Rayman Origins. But this begs some very specific questions: Why did Ubisoft release this on the same day as their blockbuster Assassin's Creed outing? Why have you not heard of this game? Why is Rayman jumping on those birds? None of that matters, though. What matters is that you play this game, by any means necessary. Rayman, Globox, and their Teensie pals awake some nasty weird zombie grandma and then they get yelled at and then their friend's teeth goes missing and then they're caught in some weird dream land where they have to collect these musical electoons and save this women and... You know what? The plot really isn't that important. Rayman Origins is easily the best platforming gameplay in years since Super Mario Bros 3. As sacrilegious as that may sound, Rayman outdoes Mario in nearly every regard. Most of this comes from the brilliant level design. You'll travel through stages that project you along at blinding speeds. New worlds will evolve to match your newfound abilities. Some levels will require patience and thorough exploration whereas others will make you run like hell to survive.

Straddling a thin line between demanding and forgiving, Rayman Origins is a rare 2D platformer that owes a debt of gratitude to the past without being burdened by it. There's an unyielding level of difficulty bubbling beneath the surface of this terrific side-scroller, but it's complemented by a decidedly modern abundance of checkpoints and infinite lives so that your fate rests squarely in your own hands. Combined with a relentlessly charming art design that's equal parts absurd and beautiful, Rayman Origins is a platformer that gives you every last reason to keep running along in spite of any challenges you encounter. Rayman Origins is a living, breathing testament to the artistic capabilities of a 2D canvas. Every one of the game's numerous landscapes is filled with rich, hand-drawn detail, from the lush foliage of Jibberish Jungle to the flurrying snowfalls of Mystical Pique. There's an almost eccentric level of variety on display here. One moment, you swim through a haunting underwater abyss; the next, you leap across an industrial cooking pot full of molten lava in some hellacious version of a Mexican restaurant kitchen. Whether it's your own character or the many different enemies you encounter, the 2D animations are wonderfully fluid and impress a strong kinetic energy onto every last bit of movement.

Somewhere out there, in a leafy private estate, there's a place called The Bubsy the Bobcat Memorial Retirement Home. This is where all the mascots went at the end of the '90s. Step inside, and you'll find a crowd of familiar faces: Aero the Acro-Bat sits in the corner, muttering to himself. Croc and Bug labour over a jigsaw, though it's missing 13 pieces. Gex the gecko just stands at the window, day after day. The one-liners dried up a long time ago.Crash Bandicoot is let out on day release, sometimes. He still looks the same, but when you look in his eyes you can tell he's not really there.Somehow, Rayman escaped the dusty fate of his contemporaries. Over the past few years he's been reduced from leading man to a supporting role, playing second fiddle to the Rabbids and their endless mini-games. Now, however, Ubisoft has rewarded Rayman for his patience, returning him to the limelight in a 2D platform outing that immediately recalls the golden days of the genre. It's the most earnest jump-and-gather exercise since last year's Donkey Kong Country Returns, and with the emphasis on strict timing, hidden rooms, and the gathering of endless collectibles, it feels as if Nintendo's unruly ape - and his Rare outings, in particular - has been a major source of inspiration.

When I started playing Rayman Origins, I didn't have any particular fondness for the character or the series in general. I always felt that, amiable as he might be, Rayman was a junior varsity player in a league of professionals. Call me a convert. After putting down my controller for the last time, I can't wait to see what else Ubisoft has in store for Rayman, Globox, and the rest of the crew. Rayman Origins is an undeniably beautiful game, with vibrant environments and richly defined characters. The graphical fidelity is astounding, even when you scrunch your face against the TV screen. Characters kick up eyelash-sized tufts of grass when they land, and the backgrounds are layered with loads of tiny details. Ubisoft Montpellier didn't just create a pretty game, though. Rayman Origins holds its own with the best platformers out there. I was a little concerned about the game when I saw the intricate animations; while I appreciate how nice they can look, I also know that those lovingly crafted frames of animation can translate into imprecise controls and generally mushy-feeling action. Ubisoft managed to hit a sweet spot here, creating stunning characters that are also responsive.

Rayman Origins is distressingly pretty.Rayman Origins is distressingly pretty. One look at its quaint hand-drawn worlds is enough to warm the hearts of even the most jaded, cynical and cold-hearted of gamers. Martin thinks it "looks great". Its organic worlds are created from a palette of vibrant hues, with hand-drawn environments, detailed character sprites and slick animations. Concept art that would usually find itself relegated to a collector's edition art-book is literally whacked straight into the game here. To use a somewhat horrible analogy: it's like a painting - or perhaps more appropriately, a children's story book - come to life.This, in part, is why the game earned itself a place on our best of gamescom list.As the title suggests, Rayman Origins is a return to the limbless wonder's two-dimensional roots; a platformer rooted in old-school sensibilities. It's very much like his very first outing back on the PSone, except with those lovely HD visuals I was banging on about earlier and four-player co-op. This, in fact, is how I experienced the game behind closed doors at gamescom - with three other players trotting along beside me.
