Raving Rabbids: Travel in Time Review

When it comes to enduring icons of the video game industry, squat googly-eyed creatures with a penchant for screaming don't really seem like they would have the sticking power to make a lasting impression. Yet, four years after the name "Rabbids" first appeared on a box cover, these manic weirdos have established themselves as one of the most consistently funny crews in the business. The rabbids latest outing, Raving Rabbids: Travel in Time, is full of their signature goofiness, including such amusements as silly alternate-history scenarios and a dedicated scream button. The action itself is uneven, so while some game types are satisfying and fun, others are lackluster and awkward. Things get better when other players jump into the fray, and though the shallowness eventually catches up with you, that wacky rabbid charm goes a long way toward extending the game's appeal. Travel in Time finds your rabbid transported via magical washing machine to the halls of a museum. From there, you waddle around a spacious central area to access the various types of games available for play. Some can be played without leaving the hall, and these offer simple, if short-lived, enjoyment.

Raving Rabbids: Travel in Time Review

Rabbids are without a doubt the most dangerous creatures to ever exist. According to the latest mini-game compilation, Travel in Time, these creepy-yet-cute bunnies are both destructive and inspirational -- their time traveling antics caused the Titanic to sink, an Egyptian pyramid to crumble, and the Mona Lisa to don her signature smile. In case you're confused, the latest game features those pesky Rabbids making mischief throughout the history of the world. Hopping from timeline to timeline in a washing machine (you couldn't have found a cooler ride, like a DeLorean?), the bunnies don't follow a storyline of any consequence; unlike the last endeavor, Rabbids Go Home. Instead, Travel in Time returns to its mini-game focused roots and you're dumped in a museum comprised of several hub worlds to explore. Each houses a specific type of mini-game, so the Flyarium is where you'll race around in planes, the Shootarium is where you'll use the Wii remote as a gun, etc. and you select the game you want to play by making your Rabbid belch. Or sing. Or whatever that noise is they make.

Raving Rabbids: Travel in Time Review

Time travel is always an interesting point of discussion. Special relativity, wormholes, parallel universes, Hawking's chronology protection conjecture, flux capacitors – it's the kind of thing that fuels heated debates late at night, usually after watching something like Lost or Donnie Darko. It's accepted that the laws of physics permit time travel to the future - theoretically speaking, of course - but travel to the past is both technically and theoretically impossible (discounting the theory of travelling to the past of a parallel universe). The Raving Rabbids aren't concerned with such limitations, however – they have a time travelling washing machine and aren't bothered in the slightest about changing the course of history. They frequently do, in fact. This is the basic set up for Ubisoft's latest Rabbids game, which sees the strange little creatures flitting through time and disrupting key moments from Earth's history along the way. Travel in Time is a return to the party game formula that defined earlier games in the series, an excuse to rally some chums together and merrily flail your limbs about in front of the TV. Yes, it's a mini-game collection, but it compiles its activities with such a refined mixture of absurdity and charm that even core players are likely to have a good time.
