Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One

The Rachet and Clank franchise is one of the best PlayStation exclusives--period. A fusion of Nintendo's long-standing tradition of cartoony characters married to gameplay pulled from much more mature titles, Ratchet and Clank games are perfect for both children and adults. So, it comes to no surprise that developer Insomniac Games would want to bring this transgenerational fanbase together in a game that takes the best features of Rachet and Clank and marries it with a family-friendly cooperative experience. The resulting Ratchet and Clank: All 4 One is a mixed bag with some good ideas that get squashed under some odd design decisions, making the game almost meanly competitive. The core of any Ratchet and Clank game is to take our titular Lombax hero and guide him through linear platforming sections while utilizing a variety of different weapons against hundreds of enemies. All 4 One is no different, presenting players with sections of gentle platforming sections, this time requiring cooperative techniques. For example, players need to throw each other across ledges to hit switches or to lasso each other across the cavern. It's nothing you haven't seen in a cooperative platformer before, but some of these little challenges turn into extremely short minigames that are fun enough in their own way.

Review: Ratchet and Clank: All 4 One

We're all for a polished Ratchet & Clank multiplayer experience, but pesky bugs and other issues put a slight damper on this party. Typically, the release of a new Ratchet & Clank console game can shine through the dim haze of any packed holiday season, as Insomniac Games is one of only a tiny handful of developers that consistently delivers knockout-amazing action-platformers. Such was certainly the case with Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction and follow-up A Crack in Time, both of which proved that colorful and funny experiences can stand toe to toe with the typical fall deluge of violent shooters (at least in noteworthiness). But Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One is very much a different beast, as evidenced by its title, which shares the all-important bit of knowledge here: for the first time, this series entry is a four-player co-op experience. It's not unlike the LEGO games of recent years, where the prime directives include blasting and bashing enemies, solving light puzzles, and nabbing thousands of little pieces of virtual currency. So much of what made Ratchet shine over the last nine years is still present here, from the creative weaponry to the amusing jokes and fabulous visuals, but it doesn't all come together with quite the same impact as the more traditional entries.

Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One Review

It's all a matter of perspective. When you compare All 4 One to previous Ratchet & Clank games, you might think the biggest change is the addition of a cooperative mode. But given that you could team up in Ratchet: Deadlocked, that isn't quite true. Rather, a zoomed-out, fixed-angle camera is the biggest differentiator. You no longer view battles up close and personal with direct control over where your bullets fly. And this shift in how you look at and interact with the world makes the shooting portion of this space-faring adventure its weakest aspect. Thankfully, thoughtful puzzles and exciting vehicle sequences partially fill the void left by the so-so combat, and the inherent delight of joining forces with your friends ensures you're continually having fun. This may not be the Ratchet you've grown accustomed to, but whimsical charm and wacky hijinks make this another solid entry in the long-running franchise. The idea of Dr. Nefarious joining forces with the formidable duo who has repeatedly foiled his evil plans may sound like the most preposterous aspect of this oddball plot, but there's one device that's even harder to swallow. The fourth member of your crew--the bumbling, selfish, and cowardly Captain Quark--has been elected president for reasons that cannot be fully comprehended.

Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One Review

The Ratchet & Clank series is one rarely enjoyed with friends. With all that platforming, gunplay, and space travel to consider, multiplayer only shows up on occasion. With Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One, the developers at Insomniac tackled cooperative Ratchet multiplayer for the first time. This massive change adds a phenomenal new flavor to an old recipe, one that overpowers any sacrifices Insomniac made to depart so drastically from the familiar. If you've begged the vast ether for something new from a classic PlayStation franchise, you finally got it. And we lucked-out, because All 4 One succeeds far more than it stumbles. Things start off with Ratchet and Clank lamenting their heroic lifestyle. Both wish for a more relaxed existence away from the death-defying stunts of their youth. But when their foil Dr. Nefarious shows up, the plot takes an unusual turn. Ratchet, Clank, Qwark, and Dr. Nefarious himself come face-to-face with a mysterious new threat, and soon they find themselves trapped on an alien world filled with some of the galaxy's most savage predators. They say desperate times call for desperate measures, so the three heroes (and villain) team up to save the universe.

Ratchet and Clank All 4 One Review

I'm not really sure who asked for the Ratchet & Clank series to focus on cooperative play, but it certainly wasn't me. I'm a big fan of the Lombax's previous space adventures, with the series managing to combine some good old-fashioned platforming with excellent projectile and melee combat. I really didn't want Insomniac to ditch this formula in favour of four-player co-op, fixed camera angles and simplified gameplay. But that's what we've got. Those aspects sound like your kind of thing? Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One carries them off pretty well.As you might expect if you've been following the series, the evil Dr. Nefarious hatches a plan to destroy Ratchet, Clank, and Captain Qwark, but things go wrong. The quartet are kidnapped by new villain Ephemeris the Creature Collector, sent to the planet Magnus and forced to work together in order to fight against this new foe. It's a little contrived, but the four main characters had to be put together somehow. On some levels All 4 One plays a lot like its predecessors. You still acquire a massive arsenal of inventive weapons (most of which you'll have come across before if you're a long-time fan), which is pretty much the series' trademark feature.

Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One

Co-op is king in this generation of video games. We've spent many gleeful hours alongside friends aerating zombies, enemy soldiers, and alien invaders in myriad first-person shooters. While face-shooting is entertaining, sometimes we want a break from all the gritty violence. Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One lets us continue shooting stuff with our friends while delivering gorgeous cartoony visuals, inventive weaponry, manic gameplay switch-ups, and more witty dialogue than you can shake an OmniWrench at. Quark preparing an acceptance speech for his Intergalactic Tool of Justice Award. Things go sour when recurring bad guy Dr. Nefarious attempts to take out Ratchet and the crew. Things go from bad to worse when a malevolent force called The Collector interrupts Nefarious' attack by unleashing a monstrous beast on the city. The four dubious partners must put aside their differences to fight the rampaging monster, discover why The Collector is systematically harvesting creatures around the galaxy, and put an end to it. All 4 One's story sports all the lighthearted and fast-paced action fans of The Incredibles and other CG masterpieces have come to love. Don't let the new co-op features cause any doubts: This is another full-fledged Ratchet & Clank experience.

Review: Ratchet & Clank All 4 One is Not One 4 All Ratchet Fans

I live in a Ratchet household. Some folks live in Mario households, or Pokémon households, or even Master Chief households. But the mascot of choice for our family is the frisky, big-eared lombax. The sense of humor, the amazing graphics, and the outlandish weapons of the Ratchet & Clank games have always struck just the right chord for my daughters and me. Throughout the PS3's lifecycle that's meant that one person plays while the others merely watch the adventure unfold. You can well imagine the excitement at my place, then, when the girls learned we'd be able to tackle the next Ratchet & Clank game together. Only, this isn't exactly a Ratchet & Clank game -- at least not like the ones we've come to love in this console generation. People (myself included) often refer to Ratchet & Clank: A Crack in Time as, "the closest thing to a Pixar movie in video games." If that's true, then Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One is more or less the licensed game you'd expect to be made based on that property. That is to say, it retains a fair measure of the charm and the spirit of the source material, but there's no denying that it's a watered-down version of the real thing. That discovery raised a number of questions; not just from me, but from my young couch co-op partners.

Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One (Preview)

It's not often that we ask you to forget what you know about a game, but it will certainly make things easier to get your head around Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One. This third-person four-player cooperative game picks up after Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time and pairs four unlikely cohorts in Dr. Nefarious, Captain Qwark, and the namesake duo. The setup has Ratchet, Clank, and Qwark on the way to a dubious-sounding award ceremony. Our suspicions were confirmed when Qwark took the makeshift podium and walked into Dr. Nefarious' latest plan. As the good doctor reanimates a giant monster, the four (including Nefarious) are snatched up and made part of an intergalactic animal collection, forcing them to put aside their differences and team up. Our hands-on demo consisted of the N.E.S.T. Cliffs level and gave us a chance to take Clank through his paces. Each character has its own unique ability, and in our case we were able to toss out a bomb that would temporarily slow down time. The level consisted of basic platforming using sea creatures as bounce pads, knocking electrified ocean life off piers, smashing boxes, and fighting a giant fish boss.

Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One (Preview)

Ratchet, Clank, Qwark, and Dr. Nefarious are forming an unholy alliance for the benefit of PlayStation fans everywhere. Plot details are scarce as to why these guys would team up, but the latest entry in the Ratchet & Clank franchise is turning in a very different direction. Up to four players can join up throughout the entire game. Players can drop in and out at any time, and any combination of online and offline players can team up.All 4 One plays like a hybrid of Gauntlet, LEGO Star Wars, and, of course, Ratchet & Clank. Unlike past Ratchet games, all the characters have the same basic skill sets. Each has a grappling hook, standard blaster, and a brand new weapon sure to be a hit with fans. Ratchet is known for its amazing arsenal, and the first new weapon on display at the game's debut is a souped up vacuum that can suck up objects and shoot them off in an arc. You can launch objects like explosive mines at enemies with the vacuum, or suck up a foe and launch him back at one of his friends. You can also use this on your so-called friends to launch them off the edge of the nearest cliff. If you feel like working together, you can also shoot friends up to normally inaccessible high ledges.

Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One (Preview)

If you tuned into the Sony press conference at Gamescom last week, you got to see Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One revealed and played for the first time by Ted Price and a couple of other Insomniacs. Which means you also got to see why it's a cool new direction for the Ratchet series: one that allows up to four players to play together (either locally or online). As a hardcore Ratchet fan, I was pretty much sold on the concept within minutes of seeing it in action, but after getting a chance to check out some more of the game and chat with Chad Dezern (studio head at the new North Carolina Insomniac studio) and some of the other team members at the show, I'm even more excited about what's in store. As you see in the first videos, the game is very much like the Ratchet titles we all know and love, except here you can have up to four people playing on the same screen. According to Dezern, the project originally started as a two-player affair, where one person would play Ratchet and another would play as Clank, but when the team realized how much co-op added, it experimented with adding a third and then a fourth player. So now you can play as Ratchet and Clank, obviously, but also Captain Qwark and Dr. Nefarious.
