Prinny 2: Dawn of Operation Panties, Dood!

Despite a charming presentation and a handful of promising stages, this tough-as-nails action-platformer largely falls victim to poor level design and some wonky controls. To the inhabitants of the Disgaea universe, the Prinny isn't a creature held in high regard. And why would it be? According to the series' mythology, these highly-combustible penguin-like creatures are what evil-doers become once they die and pass on to the afterlife. But to the video game players of our universe, the Prinny has always been seen as a lovable underdog, and their first video game was both unique and tough-as-nails. After the release of the sequel, however, many of those same gamers may unfortunately start to see the Prinnies in the same light as Disgaea's population. First, let me set the record straight: Prinny 2: Operation Panties, Dood! definitely isn't the worst game you'll ever play. That being said, it may very well be the hardest. To the gamers who assume they understand Prinny 2's degree of difficulty due to their familiarity with the first title: you will be in for a bit of a rude awakening upon starting this sequel. This game is more difficult than the first, but for all the wrong reasons.

Prinny 2: Dawn of Operation Panties, Dood!

Prinny 2: Dawn of Operation Panties, Dood! is a lighthearted affair that has enough flair to stand out in a barren month of video games still recovering from the holiday overload. Published and developed by Nippon Ichi Software, the team responsible for the Disgaea franchise and Rhapsody: A Musical Adventure, Prinny 2 has many colorful traits that bode well for fans of the development studio. It’s entertaining and, at times, even with its repetitive and in-your-face comedy, quite humorous. Developed as a platfomer, Prinny 2 is a challenging romp that keeps players on their toes to collect the mystical panties for the Overlord of Prinnies named Etna. If players have never heard of a prinny before, then they are in for a treat; well at least the first hour or so. A prinny is a penguin-like creature who has a goofy attitude, repetitively says the word “dood” and thinks lowly of itself. Their antics are never short of childish, but that’s the point, though they run their course rather quickly. Any way you look at it, Prinny 2: Dawn of Operation Panties, Dood! was meant as a comedic title and accomplished that goal in spurts.

Prinny 2 Review

In the Disgaea series, Prinnies are nothing more than cannon fodder. Being used as grenades more often than fighters is an awful fate, so it was easy to take in their cheerful disposition and feel sorry for their lot in life. But after playing a few levels in their second chance in a lead role, you might take abject pleasure in punishing these combustible birds in whatever way possible. Prinny 2: Dawn of Operation Panties, Dood is structurally identical to its predecessor. As in Prinny: Can I Really Be the Hero, you traverse through side-scrolling levels hopping across platforms while fighting enemies until you reach the end boss. But the problems that erected a formidable barrier the first time around haven't been addressed in the slightest. You still have to wrestle with rigid controls the whole way through, and the frequent deaths are now so grossly unfair that it's unrelentingly aggravating. The careful balance between challenge and frustration has been upset, opening the door for bouts of head-pounding agony as you stubbornly force yourself through each stage. Tricky-but-rewarding boss fights provide adequate enticements, but there is too much misery in this demonic tale to make it worth playing for all but the most committed individuals.

Prinny 2: Dawn of Operation Panties, Dood!

Do you like dying in a game over and over in order to reach a goal? If that's the case, I got the game for you! Prinny 2: Dawn of Operation Panties, Dood! once again brings the poor, suffering, but ultimately lovable Prinnies from the Disgaea series into the spotlight, in an action platformer totally not for the faint of heart. Panties are reason the Prinnies are in trouble again. Their boss, Demon Lord Etna, has had her favorite pair of panties stolen by a famous thief and has tasked the Prinnies with getting them back. The story and characters are super over-the-top and for the most part are funny and full of personality. The Prinny franchise's main feature - some might call it their draw - is that you don't play through the game as the same character. Well... you do play as the same type of character, in a sense. The Prinnies are numerous but are incredibly weak. If they take a certain number of hits, they die in a burst of smoke and another little guy take its place. You have 1000 of these poor souls to finish the mission. If they run out, it's game over. These cute little minions aren't defenseless, though. They're armed with a saber and they're darn good with it. Attacks can be chained together into combos, which fill a bar at the bottom of the screen.

Prinny 2: Dawn of Operation Panties, Dood Review

The Disgaea franchise is well on its way to becoming the video game equivalent of that creepy guy who never quite grew out of his college goofball phase, even though he's become a bald, paunchy 40-year-old who can't hold down a day job. You know the guy: he's too busy trying to drum up stale laughs by sipping beer from a hat lined with twisty straws and doing John Belushi's "I'm a zit" routine to get his life together. Disgaea was deliriously fun back when it first hit the scene in 2003, a fresh, irreverent take on the tactical RPG that didn't just allow you to break the gameplay systems but actively encouraged it. Eight years later, however, the schtick is wearing thin. The series hasn't really evolved so much as it's amplified its own quirks, building itself into a juggernaut of corny parody and lopsided play balance rather than something truly refined. Nowhere is this more blatant than in the Prinny spin-off titles, which thrust the series' low-level peg-legged penguin demon mascots into hard-as-nails platforming challenges. As a matter of fact, the latest spin-off, Prinny 2: Dawn of Operation Panties, Dood!, encapsulates everything good and bad about Disgaea.

Prinny 2: Dawn of Operation Panties, Dood! Review

Do you appreciate a game that raises your blood pressure? A boss fight that makes your heart pound? A score screen that leaves you with shaking, sweaty hands? Then Prinny 2: Dawn of Operation Panties, Dood! was designed with you in mind. Starring the lovable demon penguin Prinny (popularized by the Disgaea series), Prinny 2 tasks the nervous hero with recovering a pair of stolen panties before Master Etna executes him or worse, cuts his salary. His journey is a tumultuous one, filled with terrible, tragic deaths. The gameplay here is basic platforming as Prinny runs from one end of a stage to the other, facing a boss at the end. He can dash, slash stuff with his knives, and perform his "hip pound" move that sends him down on an enemy's head to stun it into submission. Easy Boss, Dood The challenge comes, first and foremost, from the jumping mechanics: you can't adjust Prinny's position in the air during a jump. The star penguin can execute a second jump in the air, but both jumps have set arcs and can't be cancelled once they've begun. Every jump you make in Prinny 2 has to work, or else you'll collide with an enemy or fall down a pit.
