This Kinect-based brawler is a charming (and exhausting) distraction that makes novel use of Microsoft's motion controller. When I was two years-old, I thought I was Superman. Then I broke my leg trying to fly. At that extremely young age I was already trying to be a superhero. That desire to be someone greater and more powerful is inherent within us, and the kid-friendly Kinect fighting game PowerUp Heroes taps directly into it with its roster of empowering supersuits. It also makes me want to hit the gym, as I can barely play it for a half-hour without getting tired. Before letting me punch and kick adorable, childlike supervillains, PowerUp Heroes sets up its story by lifting straight from DC's Green Lantern. A powerful space alien crash-lands on Earth and passes on his powers to a human successor. I get to be the guy who can call lightning down from the skies and fling bad dudes around with an electro-whip. My character actually looks like me, or at least a vague cartoon approximation, as PowerUp Heroes uses an Xbox avatar for its hero. Watch out, Dr. Strange; there's a new superhero mustache in town.
Here's the thing about video games: Our means of interaction in their fictional worlds is restricted by the specific set of controls we're given, so that input has to work flawlessly. The controller is our best means of touching stuff -- we pull the trigger and we shoot, we press a button and we jump -- because it responds to our reactions in real time. For Kinect to work long-term, we need it to cooperate with what we're playing. To get there, we need fewer games like PowerUp Heroes. As an over-the-shoulder brawler starring my super-powered Xbox Live Avatar, PowerUp Heroes is a fun concept. When it worked, I could see why this could have been a good time. I'm not ashamed to have dug its fast-paced fist-fighting for kids. It takes an accessible, uncomplicated approach to combat, and this winds up working in the game's favor and against it. My hero walked into each street fight with two suits I could swap between on the fly. Each brought three distinctly powerful attacks to the table in addition to my ranged blasts and unmatched face-punching skill. If my on-screen Mitch followed through when I told him what to do, the sensation of raising the dead with an arm lift made me feel like a godly puppet master.
