PokePark Wii: Pikachu's Adventure

You caught them, you battled them, you even photographed them, and now it's time to befriend them. PokePark Wii: Pikachu's Adventure has players assuming control of everyone's beloved electric Pokemon to save the world from impending doom, all while enjoying an occasional game of hide and seek. The legendary Mew appears to Pikachu in his dreams and tells of an impending doom that threatens PokePark. The only way to save it and its inhabitants is to collect the scattered Sky Prism Shards that broke apart after the PokePark's Rulers became enemies. Failing to collect all the shards will cause Mew's Sky Pavilion to come crashing down and destroy everything upon impact. So it's up to Pikachu to reunite and ultimately save everyone. The core idea of PokePark is to become friends with a mix 193 Pokemon while searching for the elusive Sky Prism pieces. As you explore areas such as the green forest of the Meadow Zone, the cavernous Lava Zone and the island paradise of the Beach Zone, you come across a myriad of Pokemon that inhabit them. Befriending them doesn't require battle, but rather, beating them in games of tag, hide and seek, platform hopping, Pokemon trivia, and more.

PokéPark Wii: Pikachu‘s Adventure

Oh, PokéPark, would that the real world were more like you. PokéPark, with your beautifully landscaped gardens, your pristine beaches and manicured slopes, I envy your vistas. PokéPark, where all one need do to make a new friend is play a game of hide and seek, I covet your lack of awkward social mores. PokéPark, where even the most hostile rivalries turn out to be friendly misunderstandings, I long for your simple diplomacy. PokéPark is one of those places where you can't help but see the good in the world, and want to add to it, in that uniquely PokéPark way: by pummeling the stuffing out of everyone you meet. click to enlargeThink of PokéPark Wii: Pikachu's Adventure as an introductory RPG primer for young gamers. It's got all the earmarks of an RPG, but unlike most, it's not heavily strategy-based. Sure, Pikachu is given an ultimate quest (find the 14 shards of the shattered sky prism), a world in which to roam (the five zones of PokéPark), and the ability to gather information from other characters, but the focus here is really up to the player. You can go on the quest, or you can just stay and play in the park.

PokePark Wii: Pikachu's Adventure Review

For the last few years, the good titles based on the PokeUniverse have mostly been released on the DS. Though there are Pokemon games for the Wii, most of them aren't worth your time. That's about to change with the next iteration in the franchise – PokePark Wii: Pikachu's Adventure. Obviously a game directed at a younger audience, this mini-game heavy RPG is also fun for adults that go into the venture with the right mindset. To jump start the adventure, the mystical and rare Mew seeks out Pikachu and his friends Chikorita, Charmander and Piplup to help save the PokePark from destruction. Venusaur, Blaziken and Empoleon, former friends and rulers of the PokePark's regions, have drifted apart and the lack of friendship has shattered the Sky Prism, scattering its pieces all throughout the land. Maybe that doesn't sound so bad at first, but the Sky Prism is what keeps the Sky Pavilion (a magical fortress in the heavens where Mew lives) afloat and without it, it will fall from above and crush all those that live in the PokePark. Using the Wii remote horizontally and playing chiefly as Pikachu, you will explore the different zones of the park with the goal of making friends with 193 different Pokemon, gathering berries, solving problems and clearing Attractions (mini-games) so you can collect Sky Prism pieces.

PokePark Wii: Pikachu's Adventure Review

PokePark Wii is a world apart from the role-playing games at the core of the Pokemon megafranchise. There are no humans and no pokeballs. In place of Pokemon battles, there are infrequent, sporty minigames. Instead of capturing and collecting Pokemon, you, as Pikachu, roam the park befriending them. This is a free-roaming Pokesafari punctuated by controller-waggling park attractions, often in the form of races or time trials. There's not a lot in it for an experienced gamer, but if hanging out with adorable Pokemon is all you ever wanted from a Wii game, look no further. The skeletal plot on which the game's action hangs involves Pikachu retrieving the 14 shards of the broken sky prism, thereby saving the PokePark--a Pokemon-only theme park--from destruction. These 14 prism pieces are in the paws, claws, and flippers of the keepers of the park's 14 skill game attractions, and they're not giving them up until you've beaten the target scores. To do so, you open up each of the park's themed zones (Meadow Zone, Lava Zone, Haunted Zone, and the like). These usually have you perform simple fetch quests, making friends with the park's inhabitants as you go.

PokePark Wii: Pikachu's Adventure Review

Imagine a Pokémon game interpreted for a demographic of Wii owners and you get PokéPark Wii: Pikachu's Adventure. It's the family-friendly, mini-game-riddled interpretation of the Pokémon franchise: a game that takes the cuteness of Pikachu and the numbing simplicity of befriending Pokémon repeatedly over the course of hours, and then corrals the two into a park. The game's primary feature isn't "Adventure" as it says in the title, as much as it is a parade of cuteness that envelops about 80 per cent of the screen at any given time. It's a fact you quickly become aware of when within the first four minutes of entering PokéPark you're faced with the Poke-equivalent of a bunny. The park is filled with a variety of cute, shuffling Pokémon who you befriend throughout the game, and who serve as the basis of all mini-games.Actually, the game is based, at least in name, on an existing PokéPark. It originated as a travelling theme-park that had made its way through Japan and Taiwan around 2005 and functioned essentially as a promotional tie-in for the franchise, featuring attractions such as Dancing Pokémon Mini-tour and Pichu Bros. Rascal Railroad.
