Pokemon HeartGold Version Review

It's absurd how many variations of the Pokemon role-playing games have been released since the series first hit the US in 1998. Most entries are launched in pairs with only minor differences between the two--typically in the form of unique Pokemon that must be traded between versions--and they're eventually followed up by a slightly slicker remake a few years later. What's even more ridiculous is how little these games have changed from one generation to the next, yet Poke-addicts still flock to their local gaming shops to pick up the latest version on an almost annual basis. This speaks volumes about the strength of the original concept and gameplay, but you'd think fans would reach their breaking point sooner or later. As a preventive measure, Nintendo and Game Freak have rolled out a secret weapon for their latest venture. Even though Pokemon HeartGold and SoulSilver are remakes of their 10-year-old Game Boy Color counterparts, they're the first entries in the series to actually make you want to exercise, thanks to the ingenious Pokewalker accessory that comes bundled with them. Yes, the prospect of getting up off your duff and walking around the neighborhood becomes a lot more enticing when you can level up your favorite Pokemon in the process. That's the real hook here, and it's a sharp one.

Pokemon HeartGold Version

I am a dedicated Pokemon fan, but even I can admit that Nintendo and Game Freak have done little to innovate their original concept over the last decade. Fortunately, the HeartGold and SoulSilver re-makes are the most expansive, accessible, and streamlined Pokemon games ever created. New features such as the bundled PokeWalker peripheral, the Pokeathlon mini-game, and the greatly-enhanced graphics are just the tip of the iceberg: these two Pokemon games are perhaps the most engrossing handheld games ever created. It is overwhelming to think about catching all 493 Pokemon, but the updated mechanics and an improved interface make the effort worthwhile. If you haven't given up on the series, or you enjoyed Gold and Silver as much as I did, prepare to reminisce – just don't be surprised if you suddenly need a 12-step program to cope with the addiction! Compared to the other Pokemon games, Gold and Silver had a particularly weak storyline. Sure, they all seem to follow the same basic path (leave hometown, catch Pokemon, collect Badges, become Champion), but the fourth generation's heavy topics were far more interesting: Who could forget Team Galactic's illegal Pokemon experiments, or Cyrus's psychotic determination to destroy the world and create his own utopia?

Pokemon HeartGold

My god, honestly, how many Pokemon games have there been so far? Colors, metals, jewels, followed by pinball and cards and puzzle games... probably a dating sim, I don't really know for sure (but really, why not?). It's amazing how long the series has lasted, and with consistantly good games in the line. See, Army Men? It is possible to have a hundred games come out without going stale! Even if this game's really at heart a remake (reimagining?) of the classic Game Boy Color versions, enough new material has been brought in to make it worth revisiting. The gameplay is completely unchanged from the original versions: Run around the world, stop Team Rocket, and work to make yourself the greatest Pokemon trainer of them all, defeating gym leaders and wild Pokemon along the way to make yourself an enslaver of cute animals stronger. Battling characters is easy to understand and to work with, and with a steady learning curve, even people who don't play games can easily jump in and fight with the rest of the world.

Pokemon HeartGold Review

What is it about the Pokémon series that draws players back time and time again? Aside from improved graphics and a few new features, the formula hasn't changed since the original Red and Blue games from 1996. Regardless of this fact, the weeks leading up to the DS remakes of Pokémon Gold and Silver have been a frenzied blur of excitement. Gaming forums and communities from all corners of the web play host to the same assortment of zealous questions: which version should I get? What starter Pokémon should I choose? Want to arrange a battle? Nearly 15 years since its inception and Poké-fever is as contagious as ever, but is the series still worthy of all the excitement?Much like Pokémon Fire Red and Leaf Green, HeartGold and SoulSilver are remakes of existing games in the series. The graphics have been spruced up for the DS generation and the game now has lovely WiFi connectivity features, but it's still essentially the same experience as that on the Game Boy Colour ten years ago. This is nothing to be sneered at, however, as Gold and Silver are widely regarded as the best games in the series.If for some mind-boggling reason you haven't played a Pokémon game before, pay heed to the following paragraph as I explain what you've been missing out on for the last decade and a half.

Pokemon HeartGold

Game Freak has a large portfolio of Pokémon titles that have met tremendous success despite the fact they don't take major leaps in innovation from one entry to the next. If you've played one Pokémon game in the series, you've essentially played them all. Battle across vast expanses of tall grass to beef up your Pokédex. Challenge gym trainers region-wide and pummel their Pokémon to collect precious badges. In HeartGold, it's no different. As a remake of the Game Boy Color's Pokémon Gold, you'll tread the same map locations and experience the same storyline. However, even though you're replaying a game that first debuted nearly 10 years ago, watching a Poké Ball rock back and forth on a possible capture will still make you hold your breath until you hear the satisfying click. Nostalgia may not be enough for some players to give HeartGold a go, thus the addition of the bundled Pokéwalker is certainly welcome. The Pokéwalker is a fun, hands-on alternative to the in-game Pokémon Day Care that will allow you to level Pokémon who may not be ready to battle in their current state. Similar to the Pokémon Pikachu pedometer that interacted with the Game Boy Color back when Gold was released, the Pokéwalker allows you to easily transfer collected Pokémon via infrared to and from the device.

Pokemon HeartGold Review

I'll admit it: after chugging through several dozen hours of Pokemon Platinum, I felt that my time in the world of Pokemon RPGs was coming to an end. There's only so much "gotta catch 'em all" one can take, and after playing through the addictive series for more than a decade, I felt maybe it might be time to pass the review gauntlet off to another editor. But then Nintendo and Game Freak did something devious: they sucked me back in again. Curse those guys ticking my gadget fetish with the bundled Pokewalker... Pokemon HeartGold and SoulSilver are the two latest games in the Pokemon RPG series and are remakes of Pokemon Gold and Silver that existed on the Game Boy Color. On the surface the two games are virtually identical to each other, but each houses different species of Pokemon to make them unique. Game Freak did more than give the experience a new coat of paint with the 3D engine from Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum; they also added things to discover during the massive quest. Most importantly, the new Pokewalker gadget brings a welcome twist to the familiar franchise, making HeartGold and SoulSilver a bit more attractive to those who've already experienced the series several times over the last 14 years.
