Phantasy Star Portable 2 Review

In many ways the PSP is starting to show its age. Even with numerous redesigns, it seems to be losing ground to the competition, as handheld gamers are ready to move on to the next thing --whether that "next thing" is touch control or 3D. But the PSP can still pull off tricks that just aren't possible on other devices. For example, Phantasy Star Portable 2 is a subscription-free MMO in the palm of your hand. Phantasy Star Portable is somewhat based off of Phantasy Star Universe from the consoles. Anyone familiar with the franchise will recognize the content immediately and gamers who played the first game on the PSP will remember that it had a number of notable problems. The presentation was lacking, and it didn't have an "infrastructure mode," meaning you couldn't play with others over the internet, only over the local wireless connection. Both of these issues have been addressed, making the sequel far more attractive. The game starts out with a story mode that introduces some genuinely likeable characters and a mediocre story that acts more like a giant tutorial, at least for the first 10 hours. Players create a character (and there are plenty of visual options) and choose a class that carries over from single-player to multiplayer and back again.

Phantasy Star Portable 2 Review

Phantasy Star Portable 2 is an action role-playing game that boasts fast real-time combat and deep customization options. Its fiendishly large monsters and rich weapon variety are reminiscent of Monster Hunter, but PSP2's gameplay is more approachable. The game struggles with both wonky AI and a lack of mission variety, but the repetitive nature of the missions is less noticeable in multiplayer where even replaying them over and over again with friends can be a lot of fun. This is a challenging adventure that's enjoyable despite some defects. The game opens in the Gurhal system three years after the defeat of the invading seed monsters. You're cast as the newest recruit of Little Wing, a mercenary group that pairs you with a young girl in the fight to save the universe. Although the plot uses simple, cliche themes, your sweet, but troubled partner draws you in as you unravel her tragic history. Interesting substories also serve to flesh out the cast, providing witty banter while you explore themes of heartbreak and loss. For example, one mission has you searching for an ally's attacked homeland, while another unveils a sad romance between two party members.

Phantasy Star Portable 2 Review

I try my best not to smear grease on my PSP as I balance Phantasy Star Portable 2 in one hand and a Mc-something-or-other in the other at the local fast-food trough. Suddenly, I'm struck with a brief sense of wonderment as I realize how impressed my sixteen-year-old self would be with this whole scenario; the latest Phantasy Star -- a franchise I worshipped as a youth -- playable online and on-demand with a device that (almost) fits in my pocket. "Screw hoverboards," I think. "This is the future." That sentiment fades fast as a boss monster drops my spiky-haired swordsman with a single, unexpected strike -- my fourth such failure in the last fifteen minutes. The game pauses to load as I curse under my breath, respawn in the game's hub city, stroll unenthusiastically to my ship, and, finally, reload the encounter for a fifth time. Once again, my three-hit combos barely put a dent in the towering hellbeast before I'm snuffed. And, at this precise moment, "the future" starts feeling a lot more like a gussied-up 2001. Come to think of it, almost everything about Phantasy Star Portable 2 reeks of the past.

Phantasy Star Portable 2

Phantasy Star is an acquired taste amongst the role-playing faithful. It's unlike most of the experiences out there, with a deeper leveling-up system and a variety of customized classes to keep you returning for more. On the other hand, however, the strict online settings for the last few games have been a turn off for some, as well as the grinding, engaging in repetitive battles to get the highest stats possible. All of this returns with the latest release in the series, Phantasy Star Portable 2, and while that won’t change the minds of those who aren’t fans, those who are will happily embrace what’s here. The game's events take place roughly three years after what unfolded in Phantasy Star Universe on the other platforms. The four races that were in combat at that time have since been shut down and removed from SEED. But following their elimination, the land of Gurhal is in great turmoil, with resources dwindling down. The citizens are left to migrate into outer space, under the watchful eye of Little Wing, a military group that your character belongs to. As with any journey into uncharted territory, your team runs into plenty of trouble. One of Phantasy Star's key points is being able to customize your character, and Portable 2 lets you do just that.
