Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3 Portable Review

Hopefully, you don't need me to tell you that Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3 is an exceptional game. I mean, IGN's reviewed the game twice now -- once as a standalone game and again as the director's cut known as FES -- and each time the advice was simple: play this game. Now, the Shin Megami Tensei title is back as Persona 3 Portable, a hybrid that packs the story of Persona 3, the improvements of FES, and a new female character that's the PSP's own. It's a hodgepodge that keeps what works while dealing with the limitations of the PSP, but it's still a stellar game that people looking for a Japanese RPG or cool story should play. The thing that's always made me a Persona 3 fan is the story, and that remains largely untouched here. You're a transfer student in modern day Japan and upon arriving at your new home, you discover that this isn't just another boarding school. Every night at midnight, the citizens around you turn into coffins and a tower packed with evil beings known as "Shadows" appears. A select group of people has the ability to stay lucid during this "Dark Hour" and fight the Shadows. This group is the Specialized Extracurricular Execution Squad (SEES); they're all students, and you're one of them.

Persona 3 Portable

A stellar rendition of an already superb JRPG, Persona 3 Portable expertly captures the essence of it's PlayStation 2-based predecessors, and thanks to the inclusion of a new protagonist option, a bevy of new features, and streamlined exploration, may serve as the definitive edition of the game. When Persona 3 first hit in late 2007, the game was roundly praised as one of the best Japanese RPGs to come out in years and celebrated as a top title in the twilight days of the PS2. The praise was well earned: P3's unique blend of "social interaction sim" and hardcore dungeon-crawling RPG was an inspired take on a stalwart genre. Fan reaction to the game was so enthusiastic -- both in its native Japan and over here -- that P3 was re-released a little over half a year later as Persona 3 FES with additional content and gameplay options. Flash forward to 2010, where P3 is seeing an unprecedented third release in as many years with Persona 3 Portable on the PSP. Is this too much P3 in too short a time? Not at all -- not only does P3P feel as refreshing as it did the first time around, but it offers plenty of new content to make it the best version to date. The concept behind P3 is such: you're cast as a new transfer student at a Japanese private high school, tasked with making friendships, struggling through classes, and dealing with teenage drama.

Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3 Portable

Ah Persona. An often forgotten gem from the JRPG genre, the most established of the Shin Megami Tensei off-shoots that hasn’t received it’s just due from American audiences. It’s a shame, considering how the franchise (currently in its fourth entry) has become one of the best you’re likely to find. However, it’s easy to see why the series has often been considered “niche” as the games feature Japanese school children summoning demons by shooting themselves in the heads. However, that doesn’t stop the franchise from ranking among most engaging that the RPG genre has to offer, and this latest entry is no exception. Persona 3 is no stranger to being remade. The game was re-released on the PS2 less than a year after its initial launch as Persona 3 FES, boasting added features and bonuses. Now, the series is officially debuting on the PSP with this version, aptly titled Persona 3 Portable. Persona 3 Portable offers up some (but not all) of the additions on tap from Persona 3 FES, and also includes features that are specific to the PSP. Additionally, there are corners that were cut here and there, including scaled down cutscenes that lack the visual impact of those on offer from its console brethren.

Persona 3 Portable

Back in 2007, those were the first words out of my then-girlfriend's mouth when I told her about Persona 3, Atlus' life-sim/dungeon crawl roleplayer that sees a secret band of Japanese high school students taking on demons during the witching hour -- and trying to pass midterms and manage their love lives at the same time. We both shared a mutual interest in Japanese culture and role-playing games, and we'd both been to the country on several occasions. But her first instinct wasn't to drill me about all the Japanophilic details -- it was to inquire about the protagonist's gender. And I'd imagine many female players felt the same way when they first heard about the game. After all, women are a huge portion of the dating-sim/life-sim target market, so it's interesting that Atlus hasn't really made a concerted effort to directly target them with the modern Persona releases until now. So while the addition of a female protagonist in Persona 3 Portable isn't the only change, it's certainly the most significant one. The other major change lies in the presentation. Persona's PS2 incarnations featured detailed, stylish 3D worlds that really made the Japanese setting come to life.
