Payday: The Heist Review

Heists figure into some of the most legendary plots in movie history, and now with Payday: The Heist, this cinematic trope becomes an interesting shooter concept. Overkill Software has done a great job with this innovative idea, which throws up to four players into robberies modeled along the lines of those depicted in flicks like Ocean's Eleven and Heat. The PC/PlayStation 3 game is geared for multiplayer, although the artificial intelligence is good enough that you can play solo without missing out on too much of the crazed intensity offered up by robbing banks and shooting it out with the cops who invariably want to stop you from making off with any ill-gotten gains. Payday looks, sounds, and plays much like a standard first-person shooter, although the goals are different. Here, instead of killing all comers, you and three comrades pull off a heist while dressed in suits and freak-show masks. You pick from the assault, sharpshooter, and support classes and then head into the fray with the objective of stealing valuables that will put your gang on easy street for life. Experience points are earned in each scenario, which lead to leveling up and unlocking extra equipment.

Review: Payday: The Heist

You're robbing a bank with three of your friends. Which three friends do you choose? Your old high school buddy as a point man? Maybe. Your paintball-savvy co-worker? Might work in a support role. But when the police arrive and the plan breaks down, who can you trust to get your back and help you pull off one of the most daring crimes in history? That's the allure of Overkill's Payday: The Heist, a multiplayer co-op first-person shooter that tasks you and three of your friends with executing the crime of the century. One could easily write off Payday's formula as Left 4 Dead's cooperative combat done through the lens of heist films like Snatch or Inside Man?. But that wouldn't do Payday proper justice for its imaginative approach to criminal activity. Each of the six initial missions is an homage to a variety of Hollywood (and real life) robberies, ranging from diamond heists atop skyscrapers to complex bank robberies to a particularly audacious caper where you air-lift an armored safe room via helicopter. You'll depend on your teammates to watch your corners, rescue you when you're bleeding out, and even negotiate for your release should you be captured.

PayDay: The Heist (Preview)

The four of us walk into the bank, casual as anything in our designer suits. Armani and Gucci take up positions at the arches, behind security guards. Klein and I head into the manager's office, a low set of wooden partitions in the great marble atrium. He looks confused as I wander up. PayDay: The Heist is a classic idea, clinically polished. You and up to three other players take the parts of robbers in a variety of scenarios, each with randomized elements. You play from a first-person perspective, and the overall feel is "Counter-Strike as a heist game." Each scenario has a variety of objectives, which vary depending on your actions and how the scenario randomly plays out. Ten minutes later, we've subdued the guards, hogtied a bunch of hostages, and drilled our way through the vault gate. Sadly, we can't get through the main vault door, so we've had to go for plan B -- melting our way into the vault from above using acid we've smuggled in. While this happens, the police decide that they'll no longer be deterred by hostages, and stage frontal assault. We shoot them down, reluctantly, by the dozen.
