I was admittedly a bit embarrassed when during my (ridiculous) E3 demo of Konami's Otomedius Excellent, I made the assumption that the game was a digital download. The rep was quick to assert that the game would see a full retail release, thankfully willing to ignore what my statement really implied, namely: "This game appears to be worth about five bucks." Thing is, I wasn't wrong. Though Otomedius Excellent recently launched at the budget price of just $29.99 ($39.99 for the special edition), it still falls short of what I expect for my $30 in this economy, an unpolished mess barely worth recommending to even the most die-hard shooter fans. One of the game's many mundane boss battles. Otomedius is an offshoot of Konami's famous shooter franchise Gradius, reimaging the sleek spaceships of the series as underage girls with brazenly-exposed sideboob. The special edition of the game is designed for those among us who have completely disregarded the notion of ever courting the fairer sex, complete with an artbook worthy of any smut collection, and a pillowcase likely meant to inspire some awkward nocturnal emissions. To be fair, this isn't the first time that unsettling lolita imagery has been used to sell video games.
Otomedius Excellent is a horizontal shooter in the retro vein, complete with a few million bullets on the screen all at once and flood after flood of crazy aggressive spacecraft (and lava-craft, and cave-craft... you get the gist). Ripped off of Based on the classic Gradius franchise, OE is designed from the ground up to punish players. It's really that simple; in the old days, games were made to be dominated by hours of memorization and quick reflexes, and Gradius was one of the best. Controlling the flying girls is easy with either the D-pad or analog stick (but really, stick to the pad) in any of the three modes: Story, Multiplay, or Score Attack. Seven characters—eight with DLC—to choose from and a customizable power-up structure for each, and each has a batch of power-ups special to them. Depending on your play style, there's a character to fit the bill. The three modes are all essentially the same, so perfecting the stages is the goal instead of unlocking more than just achievements. While I appreciate a difficult game, when it feels simply overwhelming I start to get irritated. And with many classic shooters, that tends to be the problem.

I was originally introduced to Otomedius, the Japan-exclusive, arcade-only sexy Gradius spin-off that Konami launched in late 2007, during a summer I spent in Tokyo the following year. I've always had a soft spot for classic Konami franchises, with Contra, Gradius, and Lifeforce being three of my all-time most played NES games. Learning that the company hadn't just left the Vic Viper more or less to its fate after Gradius V was exciting news, even if it was Gradius wrapped in a T&A package. However, when I finally managed to find an arcade that still had Otomedius, the game was a disappointment. Unlike Gradius V, the polygonal graphics traded style for detail, and otherwise looked like they were from 2006. (You couldn't even really see the girls very well, which seemed like a real misstep.) The gameplay felt similar to classic Gradius, but it felt like there was something missing. Three years later, the 360-exclusive Otomedius Excellent doesn't feel all that much different. It's not like all the classic Gradius components aren't there. You have the Vic Viper alongside a slew of other ships, but tethered to anime girls anthropomorphizing various Konami legacy series..
On paper, Otomedius Excellent is the greatest game ever: anime girls with mostly-exposed breasts ride air scooters and blast aliens in a clone of the classic arcade shooter Gradius. Sign us up, right? In practice, though, Otomedius unfortunately misses the elements that make a great 2D shooter. The Otomedius Excellent box art reads "Inspired by the legendary Gradius." That certainly proves true -- the biggest difference is that players pilot cute girls instead of Vic Vipers. As the screen automatically scrolls from right to left, enemies fly at you in familiar patters and leave behind familiar power-ups that lead to familiar weapons. It follows a very old school design, but not in a clever or endearing way. Rather, it's a reminder that 2D shooters have come very far and seen a lot of innovation over the years. Gradius V remains more intense and visually stunning than this and it was released six years ago on the PlayStation 2. Your basic weapon feels limp and pathetic. If you're smart about upgrading, you will eventually be empowered, but one hit is all it takes to be reduced back to nothing -- that can be frustrating. Awe-inspiring bosses are an important part of any 2D shooter, but of Otomedius Excellent's eight levels, only one boss battle left an impression on me
