For many Nintendo DS owners, the most essential game in their collection has to be Mario Kart DS, a simple yet timeless example of when a Kart Racer is done just right. ModNation Racers has been making waves on PS3 of late though, could the handheld version of this ultra customisable racer be the PSP’s answer to Mario Kart? On the surface it looks like it could. The plethora of features on offer here far outweighs even the best Kart Racers on the market, especially the vast nature of the customisation options. The clue is in the title though, and it’s not surprising how much focus is given to creating your own experience; from the Kart to the Racer to the track itself. Like its PS3 sibling, ModNation Racers PSP has incredibly easy to use customisation facilities, picking out hair, colour and clothes have you using a clean and clear menu, with constructing Karts being much of the same. Track building is where the PSP version sadly begins to show the signs of downgrading from PS3, with functions like raising the track and crossing pieces of track over each other being removes completely. This is disappointing as it removes the open ended nature of the console version’s track editor, forcing you keep your imagination in check.
Generally speaking, you can expect the portable version of any given game to be crappier than its console equivalent, but you're usually also willing to accept this because, heck you can carry it around with you wherever you go. This, I refer to as the "portable crappiness threshold": sure, Tekken 6 isn't as good on my PSP as it is on my PS3, but I'm playing it on a frickin' plane for crissakes, what the hell is my problem? Unfortunately, ModNation Racers, while not bad game on its own merits, doesn't quite manage to stay on the good side of that crappiness threshold. Mostly this is because it commits the sin of being a racing game but not having a fun racing model. It's also because far too many resources were spent developing the game's "Play, Create, Share" level editor tomfoolery and not enough on a sense of speed or fun. As impressive as it is to be able to create complex racetracks on the fly with no lag on a PSP, I'm here for some balls-to-the-wall action, not a course in urban planning. So, while in theory ModNation PSP does manage to recreate (at least to some degree) the experience of its entertaining console cousin, in practice the controls are stiff, the drifting and boosting mechanics are much less satisfying, and the customization options are even more extraneous to the core gaming experience.
A few months ago I got to play ModNation Racers on the PSP for the first and only time -- and I was pretty impressed. The drifting was too stiff, but the track creation was pretty awesome as you could whip up a three-dimensional course without ever seeing the PSP chug or slow down to think about anything. I figured I'd get the game, get used to the stiff controls, and be on my way. Sadly, that didn't really happen. Driving never feels all that precise or fast, and I think it holds back an experience that's got a lot of great ideas. Unaware of ModNation Racers? Well, you're crazy, but this is a kart racer that's the next member of Sony's "Play, Create, Share" family that was kicked off by LittleBigPlanet. Sure, you'll be able to participate in a five-series career mode and race online, but there's also this suite of creation tools that let you crank out your own tracks, racers (called Mods), and karts that you can then share online so folks all around the world can download your babies. If you dig the game, you're going to have a near-constant stream of content, as long as people are popping online to play. Gas up and watch our video review.
Bringing the PlayStation 3 version of Modnation Racers to the PSP is surely a heavy burden, but after a recent play of the preview build, Sony looks to have pulled it off. The publisher brought in a number of development studios to help manage the task, and we had the opportunity to spend some quality time with the game to see how it's all coming together. ModNation PSP has been developed by Sony's San Diego studio, which has worked closely with United Front Games; the developer of its PlayStation 3 cousin. Sony also reached out to Studio Liverpool--the developer of the acclaimed Wipeout series--to use the engine technology behind the PSP versions of those games. This collaboration seems to have paid off, as ModNation Racers is shaping up to offer both addictive racing and deep customisation options. ModNation Racers is based in a world obsessed with kart racing--where young mods dream of fame, fortune, and the title of mod racing champion. You play as Tag, an up-and-coming graffiti artist turned kart racer, who is garnering attention for his driving ability, as well as his edgy custom vehicles.
I had a great time playing the PS3 version of Sony's ModNation Racers. While the racing wasn't anything revolutionary, it was good fun, and the creation tools are excellent. The promise of a similar experience on Sony's PSP got me quite excited, as kart racers seem to fit well on handhelds (thanks to Mario Kart), and a spot of track design while on the train would surely pass the time very nicely indeed.ModNation PS3 developer United Front Games isn't handling this PSP version, with Sony San Diego in charge of brining the racer to the handheld. Initially things looked promising, with the game's engine doing a good job of bringing the cute visual style seen in the PS3 game to the far less powerful PSP. Everything runs at a decent clip, too, so on that front there appears to be nothing to worry about ahead of the game's release. Not so great is the handling itself. Rather than the slidey feel of the karts that makes the PS3 game handle like Mario Kart, on the PSP the karts seem almost stuck to the road. It makes the handling seem far too simple, with the powerslide functionality, once again activated by hopping into a corner, only really needed to build up your boost meter. The vehicles could really do with a little less grip, as the game as it stands just isn't much fun to play.
