MLB 12: The Show

Some are already calling MLB 12: The Show the best baseball game to hit the gaming world. Some are still reserving judgment. For others, it's just another MLB game. Indeed, there are two ways to look at it. For people who are baseball fanatics and want authentic representation of the sport, this is a hit. But for those who are only sub-par interested in playing, this is a sacrifice bunt. There just isn't much about MLB 12: The Show that screams \"This is a classic. You won't ever forget this one!” The actual content of MLB 12: The Show all goes far beyond anyone's expectations. Past installments have had many of the same features, but this year seems to cut out all of the stops. How many times have you seen a menu have its own menu? Playing selections are out of this world. If you don't have time to sit down and thoroughly play, don't even waste your time. For those with time, you can test out your skills in just about every mode possible: homerun derby, franchise, challenge of the week, exhibition, and season mode—just to name a few. A new feature, copying homework from EA Sports' notebook, is Diamond Dynasty.

MLB 12 The Show

With the game tied in the bottom of the 12th and the Red Sox trailing the Reds two games to three in game six of the 1975 World Series, Sox catcher Carlton Fisk stepped up to the plate and launched a towering fly ball down the right field line. If it was fair it was gone. Channeling the thoughts of every Red Sox fan in the stadium that night, Fisk leapt out of the batter's box and waved his arms for the ball to stay fair. It did. As he rounded the bases, he celebrated more than most ball players do in their careers. The Red Sox didn't end up winning the series that year, but that one breath-stealing blast remains one of the sport's top moments. As I played MLB 12: The Show, I was reminded of this historic home run. My Road to the Show player, a powerful pull hitter modeled after David Ortiz, would launch fly balls into orbit down the right field line. Thanks to new physics that use RPMs to determine how the ball spins off of the bat, every hit in the game – especially those towering blasts down the line – produce different results. For the first time, this series offers rising and sinking liners, balls hitting off of bases and the pitcher's rubber, and hits tailing away from outfielders without the assistance of wind. Grass and turf types factor into the way the ball bounces, creating choppers and deadened bunts.

MLB 12: The Show Review

When it comes to baseball (the sport and the video game) you either get it, or you don't. It's the most difficult team sport to talk up to non-fans. But for the faithful, the ones who love America's past time even when it's a pitcher's duel, MLB 12: The Show provides the best baseball experience on consoles. It should come as no surprise that The Show is a great game. After all, it's been excellent for years, and when the foundation is solid the developers can keep making smaller improvements. The Show continues its legacy of having the most realistic game of baseball around. Star players look great, with animations that fully capture their personalities. New subtle additions, like pitcher's and catcher's reactions to hits, add more emotion and drama to the game. They're not colliding, which is kind of a big deal. Ball rotation physics isn't the sexiest bullet point on The Show's new features, but it's one of those changes that become instantly noticeable when you play. The ball no longer operates in the neat little vacuum before, arcing in predictable parabolas straight into the outfielder's mitt. Now line drives can chop up, balls can lift or sink in the air, and the bases can send your baseball bouncing in a different direction.

MLB 12: The Show Review

Sony has had a lot of success during the past few years with its MLB: The Show franchise. MLB 12: The Show sees a number of changes and introductions being made that touch upon all aspects of the sport. While some of these might not be immediately noticed by all, they help make MLB 12: The Show yet another attractive and enjoyable entry in this popular series. The most pronounced changes to The Show come in two parts, highlighting both pitching and hitting. With pitching, the change comes in the way of a new pulse pitching system that removes the pitching meter seen in previous years. The pulse pitching system has a pulsating circle on the screen that helps determine accuracy. After selecting the pitch you want, a circle appears on the screen that changes size. The smaller the circle is when you release, the more accurate your pitch. The size of the circle is related to the pitcher's command of the pitch, energy, and confidence. The more reliable the pitch, the smaller the circle will be; less-accurate pitches will have significantly larger circles, and it will be much more difficult to trigger accurate throws. To combat this, batting now has a zone analog system that gives the batter more control in the strike zone.
