According to U.S. retail tracker NPD, total video game sales in April 2012 fell 32 percent year-over-year from $930 million to $630 million. Physical software sales dropped even harder, from $533.7 million to $307.2 million, a 42 percent decline. Microsoft's Xbox 360 led console sales for the month with 236,000 units sold. Sony and Nintendo have not released hardware numbers at this time. “This year, Easter fell very early in April, which means most Easter-related purchases may have fallen into March this year, whereas last year, Easter fell late in April causing most sales to fall in that month," said NPD analyst Anita Frazier. "We usually find that Easter-related purchases generate an extra 10 percent in revenue in the month they occur, so some of...

Research firm NPD revealed March video game sales results for the U.S. Total video game sales declined 25 percent year-over-year from $1.47 billion to $1.1 billion. On the hardware side, Microsoft led console sales with 371,000 units sold. Nintendo and Sony have not announced hardware numbers at this time. “The Xbox 360 is the best-selling console system for the last 15, and the best-selling hardware platform overall for the past 8 months," said NPD analyst Anita Frazier. On the software side, Electronic Arts' Mass Effect 3 unsurprisingly took the top spot with Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City coming in second with 582,000 units sold. “Mass Effect 3 sold more than twice as much as did Mass Effect 2 during its introductory month in January 2010," ...

It’s a holiday weekend, so that mean’s we get to play more games that usual. We might also do some baseball watching and egg hunting. What about you? Andrew Reiner: I'm watching baseball all weekend down. Between games I'll be catching up on Eastbound and Down. Ben Hanson: This weekend will be devoted to Xenoblade, the cool kids don’t even bother adding the “Chronicles” bit on the end. I’m about 15 hours in and it is slowly transitioning from good to great, there’s no doubt that people will look back at this game as an overlooked JRPG classic. Other than that I’ll probably continue playing Hero Academy, Tetris, and Triple Town on my iPhone. Jeff Marchiafava: Now that I’m done with Mass Effect 3 and I’ve played through Jo...

Xbox Live is now used more for watching television shows and movies online than playing games. "What we're seeing is that people are turning on the Xbox to play games and then keeping it on afterwards to get other types of entertainment," Yusuf Mehdi, head of Xbox marketing, told the Los Angeles Times. Just over half the amount of time spent online through Xbox 360 is spent on entertainment. Households spend an average of 84 hours a month on Xbox Live total, a 30 percent increase from last year. Microsoft today launched Comcast XFINITY TV, HBO GO and MLB.TV through its Xbox Live service. [Source: LA Times]

The Show’s Vita debut isn’t so much a port of the console release as it is an experience tailored to take advantage of the hardware and meet the needs of the gamer on the go. Sony offers touchscreen controls where they make the most sense. On the field, they can be used to place pitches – which ends up being the most reliable way, thanks to an overly sensitive left analog stick. One flick of the finger on the rear touchscreen in the direction of a desired base will initiate a steal, pick-off attempt, or fielding throw. All of the frontend and in-game menus offer handy touchscreen controls as well. Hitting X to select a mode and pressing down on the analog stick to scroll through a roster works just as well, but the touch controls speed up menu navigation. Touch controls ...

Of all of the sports games I’ve reviewed over the last 19 years, Major League Baseball 2K11 drew the largest crowds. Most of the editors clamoring for a good view knew nothing about baseball, and were in attendance solely for a laugh produced by a glitch or bug. More times than not, the game delivered. We watched a center fielder leap 30 feet into the air to rob a home run. A catcher ran full tilt into a backstop after an uncatchable foul ball, breaking his wrist for the season. The biggest applause came when a player appeared out of thin air next to a batter and didn’t disappear until the inning came to an end. He stood there clapping as bats were swung right through is body. When I first started playing Major League Baseball 2K12, the office was buzzing with anticipation for...

With the game tied in the bottom of the 12th and the Red Sox trailing the Reds two games to three in game six of the 1975 World Series, Sox catcher Carlton Fisk stepped up to the plate and launched a towering fly ball down the right field line. If it was fair it was gone. Channeling the thoughts of every Red Sox fan in the stadium that night, Fisk leapt out of the batter's box and waved his arms for the ball to stay fair. It did. As he rounded the bases, he celebrated more than most ball players do in their careers. The Red Sox didn't end up winning the series that year, but that one breath-stealing blast remains one of the sport's top moments. As I played MLB 12: The Show, I was reminded of this historic home run. My Road to the Show player, a powerful pull hitter modeled aft...

My best friend Reiner and I have been on a lot of adventures together, but nothing could have prepared us for the epic RPG journey that is MLB 12: The Show. Can't tell your mages from your warlocks and your critical hits from your armor class? Don't worry, everyone, I'm here to help. Seriously, though, even if you're not terribly interested in MLB 12: The Show, this video's pretty funny, and you should watch it. Boston Red Sox first baseman Adrian Gonzalez talks briefly about how his childhood prepared him for MLB stardom in this Sony-produced video. Also some dorky-looking guy named Damian tells a story about how he won a game of MLB 12 The Show, and manages to be simultaneously more excited and animated than Gonzalez while relating a story a thousand times duller. (Please visit the site to view this media) It's unfair of me to make fun of Gonzalez here. Sure, like most athletes he's got all the on-camera charisma of the universally loathed Microsoft Office mascot Clippy, but at least he hit the ball some last year. A certain catcher I've been known to idolize is Gonzalez' match in the first area and managed to captain his team to 99 losses in the 2011 season. But hey, at least h...

The 2012 baseball season has already delivered more drama than a daytime soap, and players haven’t even reported to Spring Training yet. As is to be expected at this juncture in the console cycle, most of the development teams working on sports games are in their comfort zone, making subtle tweaks to pre-existing foundations rather than making wholesale changes or introducing big idea innovations. This was reflected in our reviews, as MLB 2K11 and Madden NFL 12 were the only major sports games that scored under an 8.0 from Game Informer this year. MLB 11: The Show introduced analog pitching. Tiger Woods solidified its career mode and included The Masters for the first time ever. Ever since we've had sports sims, we can't help but use them to predict the outcome of real sporting events. Baseball is a sport in which the superior team tends to win; I'm not sure what flaw in the game's code could have resulted in this aberration. Major League Baseball 2K11 plays like a blooper reel from This Week in Baseball. Unintentional hilarity is tied to broken player logic, missing transitional animations, magical ball physics, umpire pathing issues, and my favorite: terrified base coaches hitting the dirt for no reason other than to make you think they just died from an aneurysm. Every game plays out like a year in Milton Bradley’s life – you know something horrible is going to happen, you just don’t know when it will be. The lack of polish affects the visuals and gameplay, and can even cripple an entire season should you choose not to turn off your system after a catastrophic glitch occurs mid-game. I lost my starting catcher (Geovany Soto of the Cubs) to a 15-day wrist injury after he blindly crashed int...

Our guide shows you how to live a frugal, fast, and free PC existence Cheapskate. Some folks say it with a snarled upper lip and a curt, terse emphasis on the final syllable, like it’s some kind of awful, horrible moral failing. Puh-leeze. More often than not, cheapskates aren’t ripping off anyone. But the cable, satellite, software, and phone companies sure are. In a day and age when everyone is trying to upsell, premium-ize, and shake us down on a weekly basis—often under the guise of saving us money—we actually view cheapskatism as a sign of higher intelligence and reason. If approached the right way, of course. Cooling the Piggy PC's ceramic chassis was a little harder than we had anticipated. Over the next few pages, we’re going to show you how your PC can save you thousan...

Is convergence ready for prime time? More than a decade after Windows 98 introduced us to WebTV, there are loud rumblings in the tech world about the resurgent interest in convergence. Remember convergence? It is the almost mythical integration of everything that’s good out there; television and the Internet, entertainment and interaction, video and live action, peanut butter and chocolate…okay, maybe not that last one. In short, convergence is everything that your Home Theater PC (HTPC) offers now. If you’re not willing (or able) to build or buy your own HTPC, and you must have Hulu on your HDTV, then consider IETV aka Smart TV. With the current crop of boob tubes hoping to wow and impress you in a way that 3D TV hasn’t yet, manufacturers are increasingly offering in-set options. ...

Art director Heather Marshall compares several players and stadiums from last year's game to this year's upcoming edition and points out the striking differences in this dev diary. As much fun as we can make of MLB 2K10 (which is a lot, trust us), the images from 2K11 look honestly good. That's won't stop us from quoting Marshall's best 2K10 slams from the dev diary out of context, though: "In the past, our players have sported a zombie-like, wide-eyed expression.""Their faces are rounder and their noses and eyes don’t fit together on the face to sell the likeness of the player.""When the camera pans out to see your player run the bases, he’ll maintain his shape rather then popping back to an average size body, as was the case in 2K10...

The latest MLB 11: The Show trailer, ironically dubbed "The Yankee Killer," shows off Joe Mauer's game-winning heroics. Unfortunately this is just a video game, as any Twins fan can tell you, this doesn't happen often in real life. There are many things you can like about the trailer below, but this is clearly a figment of the game's imagination, as the Twins' record versus the Yankees recently (especially in the playoffs) isn't great – particularly in New York. Regardless, beating the Yankees in a game, or reality, is always fun. Enjoy everyone. (Please visit the site to view this media)

Mission-Specific Cooking Gadgets: The 25 Best, Worst, and Weirdest of All Time Give a pro chef the right ingredients, and he can make a mind-blowing meal with tools no more fancy than a sharp knife and a hot stove top. And then there’s the rest of us. We need cooking gadgets—because we wouldn’t be able to extract the juice from an orange without the help of electrical power, or cook a hot dog without a custom weenie-roaster. There’s something intrinsically kitschy about cooking gadgets. They’re just so damned mission-specific, performing a single, specialized task, often in the service of the most lowbrow or faddish of culinary trends. Think about it. A 10-inch chef’s knife isn’t kitschy. It can cut, chop, slice, dice, and mince. It’s a work horse. But a melon baller? It os...

25-year-old Hans Smith may not be able to play his favorite sport in real life because of cerebral palsy, but that still hasn't stopped him from climbing the ranks in the majors. Sony San Diego created Smith's character in MLB 10: The Show after the Cardinals fan wrote a moving letter to the team a few years ago. Getting a chance to play baseball, even in a virtual space, is something he wants to share with other disabled gamers. With the help of Sony's development team, a new difficulty level will be added that will make MLB 11 more accessible. "It comes from the fact that I can't physically play baseball, a game I am fanatic about," Smith tells ESPN. "But I've been able to play baseball over the years by playing various video games. I love baseball vid...

Rockstar Western leads the pack with nine nods for Interactive Achievement Awards, Namco Bandai action game and Sony's mythological trilogy caper secure six nominations each. If it's an honor just to be nominated, no game has been honored more by the Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences this year than Red Dead Redemption. The AIAS announced the finalists for its 14th annual Interactive Achievement Awards, giving Rockstar San Diego's open-world Western shooter nominations in nine different categories--including Game of the Year--more than any other title. Red Dead Redemption could be adding to its trophy case. Red Dead Redemption has already been named GameSpot's 2010 Game of the Year and was among the nominees for the Game Developers Choice Award...
