Minecraft Review

Minecraft is dangerous. You can sit down to a new randomly generated world for a quick session only to snap out of the creative haze many hours later to realize you've forgotten to eat, sleep, and go to the bathroom. There's always just one more tunnel to carve, one more resource to harvest, one more tool to forge, or one more to-scale replica of the Star Trek Enterprise to re-create block by block. The ability to exercise limitless freedom and mold the game's retro fantasy world to your liking is powerfully addictive, and this indie-developed sandbox phenomenon holds a staggering level of depth. Some of the game's elements still feel rough and unfinished, but nevertheless, once Minecraft sinks its hooks into you, it won't let go. Though it initially lacks any tangible plot or specific direction to follow, the real beauty of Minecraft lies in the fact that neither is needed. You get out of the game what you choose to put into it, which allows you to pursue the aspects that most appeal to you. Survival mode is where the experience comes closest to resembling a game in a traditional sense. Dropped into a lovely but primitive-looking 3D world, you're free to explore, build, and adventure as you see fit.

Minecraft Review

No other video game has unleashed my creativity like Minecraft. I've spent countless hours chipping away at blocks, gathering the necessary materials to complete the next masterpiece that would otherwise only occupy my mind's eye. I've also spent just as many hours exploring, spelunking and slashing my way through monsters with bravado. My character – my entire Minecraft world – constantly evolves into whatever I want it to be. I tell my own stories, I write my own destiny and I bring my fantasies to life one brick at a time. Minecraft stands out not only for the way it inspires me creatively, but also because of its unique aesthetic. Look, I know the visuals look dated and a bit silly, but few games have visuals so endearing and charming. I know I'm not the only one who feels that way either, or else Minecraft's graphics wouldn't be so iconic. Could you take a texture from Gears of War, Halo or Uncharted, put it on a shirt and have players identify it? I doubt it. The looks just work, giving the game a super unique appearance that's memorable, and brings up a bit of nostalgia in me for 8-bit era games.

Review: Minecraft

Minecraft, one might have noticed, is kind of a big deal. If you're the sort of person who reads about videogames on the Internet, which seems like a safe assumption, it would have taken a directed force of will to avoid hearing about it by now. So you probably already know that it's a sandbox style game that takes place in a procedurally generated world made up of one-meter blocks that can be mined and crafted to create everything from a simple sod house to a scale replica of the starship Enterprise. Or an automated pooping butt. Or a gigantic mechanical player piano. Or a scale recreation of most of Middle Earth. Or... yeah, the sense of awe at the outrageous feats of engineering players have cobbled together is only eclipsed by the sales of the game itself and the subculture that has sprouted up around it. Almost two years ago Minecraft went from a weird indie project with a cult following to a million-seller that's still earning nearly $200,000 a day in sales, and that was before the game was officially released. This game that one guy slapped together has now become the nucleus of a massive fandom -- one that just enjoyed its first major convention in Vegas over this past weekend. Hell, some guy made an entire concept album about the game's iconic suicide-bombing creepers.

Minecraft Review

When the order to review Minecraft first came down from On High, I was honestly dumbstruck. "Review Minecraft?" I wondered to myself. "Like, with words and numbers? Is that even possible?" So I obsessed about it for days, reawakening a potentially life-destroying Minecraft addiction -- a fact that's now written all over my unwashed, un-shaven face. When I blink, I see blocks. When I dream, Creepers are everywhere. But I don't regret it, because I eventually came to a conclusion: Minecraft, somewhat fittingly, is what you make of it. Standard reviewing protocol doesn't work here. A.I., graphics, cover systems, and all that nonsense? They don't apply. Hell, I can't even tell you how you'll end up spending your time with the game. But I can tell you what's really defined Minecraft for me. So let's talk about that. I remember the first time my friends and I discovered Minecraft. For a short span, it became the center of our incredibly nerdy existence. It was all we talked about. "What if I build this? What if I build that? Should Sauron's all-seeing eye go next to the Millennium Falcon, or over by the half-finished attempt at recreating The Wall from Game of Thrones?" It was all we did.

Minecraft

Despite ostensibly being a PC game, Mojang's unprecedented indie smash hit has more in common with an eclectic box of toys than with Skyrim or Warcraft. Like a well-rounded set of trucks, balls, blocks, and figurines, Minecraft gives you the tools you need to bring your imagination to life. But with a real-time simulation constantly running, this is more like Toy Story than a LEGO set. Minecraft has been out in beta form for several months, but officially released on November 18 with the addition of more RPG-like elements (thus this review, which speaks solely to the current version of the game). Those additions are a mixed bag at best, but Minecraft is an amazing achievement regardless. Wandering the infinite, randomly generated 3D world of Minecraft is a game in itself. The mathematical magic Mojang has working inside the game's code creates fantastic vistas, sprawling cavern complexes, towering mountains, and much more while relying on very few pre-defined pieces like the buildings that make up NPC villages. Every world is unique, fascinating, and bursting with possibility. Whichever direction you choose, wondrous adventure awaits.

Review: Minecraft

A sandbox world with endless opportunities, Mojang's Minecraft is an outstanding creative outlet that's definitely worth your time. It was November of 2010 when I first downloaded Minecraft, which was still in its "alpha" version at the time. I was visiting a couple of friends who had already purchased the game, and seeing the epic glass tower one of them had created made it impossible to resist paying the game's $12 fee. Upon spawning in my first ever randomly-generated world, my friends gave me just one piece of advice: "You need to build a shelter before nighttime." I wandered around in the wilderness punching trees and digging up dirt, but it didn't take long for me to throw in the towel and turn to an online crafting guide, which taught me how to make tools and torches (the latter of which are important for creating safe, well-lit hidey holes). Surviving the first day/night in Minecraft is one of the most memorable gaming experiences I've ever had -- right up there with my first time getting the wing cap in Super Mario 64. It sticks out in my mind because it was something I'd never done in a video game before. Minecraft is chock-full of moments like that. One of my original creations: A recreation of Fallingwater at Bear Run by Frank Lloyd Wright.
