Metal Gear Solid HD Collection Review

Released earlier this year on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, the Metal Gear Solid HD collection on the home consoles remains the one to get, though Armature Studio's PS Vita version will still have plenty of value for handheld fans. What you're losing by opting for the Vita version, essentially, is resolution and a rock-solid 60fps framerate - this port of the game heads far closer to 30fps on many occasions. Metal Gear Solid 3 still looks very impressive on the Vita's OLED screen, mind, whereas this diminutive version of Metal Gear Solid 2 actually helps smear over many of the nasty jaggies that affected the console port.A bigger loss to some (many?) will be Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker, a game I'm not particularly fond of though it's maddening to see it removed from what should have easily been its best potential format. To see a version of the handheld title take advantage of Vita's potential would have been fantastic, but instead we are left with the backwards compatible PSP version of the game on the PlayStation Store. And you'll excuse me for reusing this paragraph from the introduction of my 360 and PS3 review of the game, but it sums up my thoughts on the series too well to not be used again: I find myself both loving and hating the series in equal measure, riddled as it is with such obvious and detracting waffle.

Metal Gear Solid HD Collection

No matter how they're shuffled, remastered, or repackaged, Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3 are great games. The exploits of Solid Snake, Raiden, and Big Boss have generated some of the most memorable experiences in gaming, and that isn't going to change. Despite that, Konami seems to be making a focused effort to wear out fans' patience with this handheld HD Collection. It isn't ideal for newcomers or for longtime fans, diminishing both its audience and value. Included in the collection are enhanced versions of the two PS2 entries in the Metal Gear series. Each one includes the bonus content and extra features added after their initial releases; you get VR missions and Snake Tales in MGS 2, and improved camera control along with the original MSX versions of Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2 in MGS 3. On one hand, this collection provides two awesome games to play on the Vita. On the other hand, it feels like a weak effort when compared to the PS3 and Xbox 360 collection of the same name. The most baffling and noteworthy difference is the exclusion of Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker from the Vita release.

Metal Gear Solid HD Collection Vita Review

Yes, you should buy the Metal Gear Solid HD Collection on PlayStation Vita. There was an off chance that the game bundling Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance and Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence could screw things up on the handheld, but it didn't. The titles look great, play smoothly and are as much fun as ever. Don't sweat plunking down the money. But you're the thorough reader. You want more than just a paragraph recommendation and a score. I dig that. The Metal Gear Solid HD Collection takes two of the best Metal Gear Solid games and puts them in one handheld experience. MGS2 casts you as Solid Snake and then Raiden as you attempt to stop an amphibious Metal Gear Ray (see: mech) and bring the world back from the brink of nuclear war. MGS3 is similar, but it's set in the '60s and casts you as Big Boss, the man who would be cloned to spawn Snake (along with a couple of bad eggs). Both of these games are classics because of the way story melds with gameplay. Before Drebin points and grabbing statue crotches, sneaking starred in the Metal Gear Solid franchise. These games are stealth masterpieces where you need to stay hidden, use silencers and complete your mission.
