Ghost Recon Future Soldier Review: A Veteran Shooter Starts To Show Its Age

By GameInformer, published 22-05-2012

A lot has changed since the Ghosts’ last tour of duty. In the five years since Advanced Warfighter 2 shipped, Battlefield has entrenched itself as a major contender in the console space and Call of Duty took over the world. The Ghosts have a lot of catching up to do to stay relevant in the hyper-competitive military shooter genre, but after a troubled development and several delays, this Future Soldier looks more like a military game of the past. The Future Soldier campaign, which focuses on the Ghosts’ attempt to thwart a Russian coup, succeeds when it sticks to the tactical approach of its predecessors. The game is at its best when you treat the micro sandboxes like puzzles, keeping your squad camouflaged and picking off unaware enemies in groups of four usin...

"At the foundation is another year of blockbuster brands: Madden NFL, FIFA, Sim City, Medal of Honor, Dead Space, and Need for Speed as well as mobile hits like The Simpsons Tapped Out, and Bejeweled," EA said. It's unclear if this is Dead Space 3 or a different game in the series. In a follow up e-mail, a spokesperson told Game Informer, "There’s no further information today but watch for several big product announcements from EA at E3 in June." EA is rumored to be developing Dead Space 3 from Visceral Games. A report from last year suggests the game will take place on an ice planet and not a space ship. EA&#...

Some games series die before their time, but that doesn't always mean the end. Occasionally, fate takes a turn and resurrects yesteryear's gaming glory. Here are ten of the best unofficial sequels in gaming history. This list originally appeared in issue 228 of Game Informer Magazine. BioShock (System Shock 2)System Shock 2 was lauded for its hybrid gameplay, moody atmosphere, and captivating story. Unfortunately, its poor sales drove many designers at Looking Glass Studios to start looking for jobs at other studios. Years after Looking Glass closed, System Shock 2 co-developer Irrational Games reworked its winning formula into a game that was both critically praised and financially successful. Science Says Video Games Are Good For Your Eyes

By GameInformer, published 18-02-2012

Researchers recently reported findings that playing first-person shooters can help your eyesight. Scientists took six subjects with cataract disorders and asked them to play Medal of Honor for 40 hours over the course of a month. The subjects played the game for two hours a day, five days a week, for a month. Daphne Maurer of McMaster University in Canada who led the study said that playtime was limited becasue she didn't want to the patients to become addicted to the game. That's also probably the reason they chose Medal of Honor instead of Battlefield 3 or Call of Duty, I assume. Five of the six participants showed improvement after the month was up. "They were able to recognize faces more easily, as well as make out small print and judge the direction of moving dots."...

Skyrim Breaks 8-Year Old UK Record

By GameInformer, published 19-12-2011

Bethesda continues to see success with its latest open-world game, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. UK software sales tracker GFK Chart-Track says Skyrim is the first game in eight years to claim the #1 spot on the Christmas Chart that wasn't released by Electronic Arts or Activision. Since then, the top Christmas Chart titles include: NFS: Underground 2 (2004), NFS: Most Wanted (2005), FIFA ‘07 (2006), CoD 4: Modern Warfare (2007), FIFA ‘09 (2008), CoD: Modern Warfare 2 (2009), and CoD: Black Ops (2010). Resident Evil 6 outed in voice actor credits - Report

By GameSpot, published 29-11-2011

Joe Cappelletti lists survival horror sequel on personal site, subsequently removes all mention of Capcom games, takes down credits page entirely.   In September of 2010, then-Capcom studio managing director Keiji Inafune said he wanted to release Resident Evil 6 as soon as possible. "Soon" may not be that far away if a recent report is any indication. This might be the biggest Resident Evil voice acting mistake since they had voice acting in the original Resident Evil. Siliconera reports that the title "Resident Evil 6" appeared in the credits list on voice actor Joe Cappelletti's personal website. The report provides a screen capture of the list in question, but GameSpot follow-up checks found all Capcom games pulled, and then the entire page deleted...

Battlefield 4 Mentioned By EA President

By GameInformer, published 11-09-2011

During a talk yesterday at the University of Southern California, EA Games President Frank Gibeau reportedly said "There is going to be a Battlefield 4." His comment was picked up on Twitter by attendees. There was no indication of when the title would be coming. EA recently began teasing the next Medal of Honor title by packing inserts in copies of Battlefield 3, likely signaling a new game is coming next fall. [Update - EA has responded to reports this afternoon. "Frank was speaking broadly about the Battlefield brand - a brand that ...

Battlefield 3 Ships 10 Million Units

By GameInformer, published 28-10-2011

EA must be pleased with how Battlefield 3 is doing so far. The company confirmed on its latest earnings call the game shipped 10 million units in its first week. EA did not provide sell-through numbers for the title, only saying they were "strong." It should be noted that "shipped' means sold to retail, not sold to customers. However, CEO John Riccitiello said retailers are already placing re-orders for Battlefield 3. This marks the biggest day-one launch in the company's history, nearly doubling last year's Medal of Honor. Battlefield 3 launches in Europe today.

When Respawn signed with EA Partners, one of the key issues was creative control over the resulting product. Zampella said Respawn owns that intellectual property and can now take it wherever it wants to go and do whatever is the best thing for the franchise. EA looking to revive 'a couple' of classic franchises

By GameSpot, published 19-08-2011

Labels boss Frank Gibeau says that a handful of properties are being reimagined; process involves introducing more than just new tech. EA has been keeping the trademarks for some of its more storied franchises up to date, re-upping its claim on the likes of Syndicate, Road Rash, Populous, Theme Park, Wing Commander, and Alpha Centauri in recent years. Those trademark applications appear to be more than just idle name squatting, however. Syndicate is likely one of those classic franchises EA is looking at. Speaking to CVG, newly appointed EA Labels president Frank Gibeau said that the publisher is in the process of rebooting a number of games from its catalog. "We do have a couple of old franchises that we're looking at right now… reimagining them and...

Purported email from EA says those who reserve DICE's shooter by end of the month via online store can score a copy of Mass Effect 2, Medal of Honor, or Dead Space 2.   Shooter fans who preorder DICE's upcoming modern shooter Battlefield 3 through Electronic Arts' recently launched online store Origin are awarded early access to the game's beta period. However, that's not the only big bonus for reserving the title through EA's virtual marketplace, according to a report. Preordering Battlefield 3 at Origin yields free games, according to the email. An email purportedly from EA forwarded to Ars Technica by a reader states that those who preorder Battlefield 3 via Origin can get a free downloadable PC game for doing so. Battlefield 3 Probably Shipping With Online Pass

By GameInformer, published 08-01-2011

In a move that should surprise no one, DICE executive producer Patrick Bach says Battlefield 3 will "probably" use EA's online pass program that requires people who purchase the title from used game retailers to pony up a little extra cash to access online multipayer. Speaking to GamerZines, Bach admitted he thinks EA is charging consumers who buy the game secondhand an additional fee to play online, and defended the policy. "The whole idea is that we're paying for servers and if you create a new account there is a big process on how that is being handled in the backend," he said. "We would rather have you buy a new game than a used game because buying a used game is only a cost to us; we don't get a single dime from a used game, but we still nee...

What Wasn't Shown At E3?

By GameInformer, published 06-11-2011

E3 is the chance for all the developers and publishers in the industry to show what they've got. But that doesn't mean that they bring all the games they're working on to the convention. Here's a look at some of the titles that didn't make it to the show this year.Of course, there are lots of reasons a company doesn't show a certain game at E3. Sometimes they want to highlight other games that might be coming out sooner. Or perhaps the title simply isn't in a state to be shown. Some of the games listed below are actual titles we already have heard about (ex. May Payne 3), and others are merely franchises that currently don't have any announced games for them – like Kingdom Hearts, but we're pretty sure that will exist in due time.Enjoy these games....

He said he believed that the young studio, founded by Infinity Ward cofounders Jason West and Vince Zampella, was working on a "Halo-killer" sci-fi shooter for publisher Electronic Arts. EA and Respawn are likely readying a sci-fi shooter to compete with Halo and Gears of War. Now, nearly a year later, an EA executive has come close to confirming Pachter's prognostication. Question Of The Month Reader Responses: Issue #219

Keep reading to see what franchises your fellow gamers prefer, and to see how many people are confused by what constitutes as a military FPS. Team Battlefield: On the subject of favorite military FPS I would have to go with the Battlefield franchise, for several reasons. Don't get me wrong, I love COD and I've been a fan of fast-paced shooters since Doom - Quake 2 was a favorite of mine for years. But Battlefield brings so much more to the FPS mix. Scalability for one: The size of the maps adds a lot of realism for me and makes for a more open world f...

Undead outer-space thriller, Dragon Age II, Crysis 2 each ship more than 2 million; company posts quarterly profit of $151 million, annual loss of $276 million.   Though the holiday quarter is traditionally when publishers make the lion's share of their money, the January-March period proved a profitable one for Electronic Arts. Today, the company reported that it had net income of $151 million for the quarter on $1.09 billion of revenue. That's up from the $30 million in net income and $979 million in revenue the company reported during the same quarter the year prior. Dead Space 2 helped revive EA's Q1 earnings. There were several reasons EA started off 2011 in the black, and they were called Dead Space 2, Dragon Age II, and Crysis 2. All of the tit...

12 Ways Consoles Are Hurting PC Gaming

By MaximumPC, published 31-03-2011

It's happened to everyone at one point or another. You're playing your favorite FPS and minding your own business when your character finally succumbs to that pesky stream of bullets that's been bouncing off his face for the past two minutes. “Aw man,” you say aloud while a big, ominous Game Over screen stares you down. “Well, at least I can jump right back in and...” But you can't. Suddenly, you're 30 minutes away from where you kicked the bucket – your previous progress rotting at the bottom of some virtual wastebasket. “Well, at least I can vary up my tactics and see the game from a different angle this time.” Nope. So many invisible walls that you may as well be a mime. “Well, at least I can--” Nuh-uh. Can't do that either. So you pause to take a breather, but they im...

By GameInformer, published 24-03-2011

After THQ reported today that it has sold more than one million copies of Homefront to consumers and shipped over 2.4 million units worldwide, EEDAR vice president of capital research Jesse Divnich issued a cautionary message to the investors who hastily ditched their THQ stocks two weeks ago. For those of you who haven't been following the drama, here's a quick recap. On the same day THQ publicly admitted that it needed to move two million copies of Homefront to break even, traders reacted negatively when the game only mustered a 71 Metacritic rating after majority of the reviews went live (you can read ours here). As a result, THQ's stock dropped 20 percent in one day. Now that THQ is reporting the game's strong early sales numbers, Divnich took the opportunity to scold...

The 15 Most Important Women in Tech History

By MaximumPC, published 03-02-2011

Do a quick Google News search for "women in technology" and your results are sure to be bemoaning the lack of female bodies in the industry (or maybe just results for that White Town album).  Last year both the NYT and the WSJ had articles related to the topic – and published within a few weeks of each other – with the WSJ’s title being “Addressing the Lack of Women Leading Tech Start-Ups” and the intro to the NYT piece setting the tone with: “It’s become a familiar lament: Where are the women in technology?” Likewise, the Wikipedia entry for "Women in Computing" focuses almost entirely on the decline of women in tech-related fields, the modern day fights against sexism in the industry, and has sections like "Attracting women in computer science" and "Gender theory an...

New Medal of Honor confirmed

By GameSpot, published 19-02-2011

Executive producer Greg Goodrich reveals hinted-at sequel is indeed in the works.   When Medal of Honor was released last October, EA was a little worried by its less-than-stellar reviews. (The critical scores were actually blamed for the megapublisher's stock price slipping.) However, four months later, the game has shipped more than 5 million units, making it a bona fide hit. A new Medal of Honor has now been confirmed. So it should come as little surprise, then, that a second Medal of Honor is in the works. The sequel is being once again developed by Danger Close Games, the sub-studio of Electronic Arts' Los Angeles campus. In a post on the official Medal of Honor website, executive producer Greg Goodrich announced the sequel, which had been hinted ...

Among the various subjects touched upon was Dead Space 2, the sci-fi horror sequel that sold-in--or shipped--2 million units as of the first of the month. EA's CEO is already thinking about Dead Space 3. Ironically, Riccitiello said that number wasn't the most accurate measurement of the game's success. Ice-T: Words With The Original Gamer

By GameInformer, published 16-02-2011

I used to call myself “The Original Gamer” in the magazine in tribute to Ice-T’s 1991 album O.G. Original Gangster, so I was excited to find out, via his many postings on YouTube and Twitter, that the gangster rap legend and actor is a devoted gamer. I recently got a chance to speak to Ice-T about his lifelong gaming habit, and he proved to be every bit as perceptive and entertaining as I hoped. Whenever we talk to athletes, they all seem to game. Is it like that in hip-hop now? What people don’t understand is that the video game industry broke right alongside the hip-hop industry. Video games, hip-hop, skateboards; all that kind of broke during the ‘80s. I had everything – the Ataris, the Segas. We grew up with it. The other thing they forget...

Battlefield 3 is as real as can be, and – straight from DICE's mouth – it's launching this fall. Game Informer's got the full scoop, but for now, it's only tossing out a few precious morsels of info. This time around, though, that'll all be nougaty filling wrapped in the Frostbite Engine 2.0's crunchy, entirely destructible shell. Beyond that, there's not much else to reveal at the moment. By GameSpot, published 02-02-2011

Publisher's share price spikes nearly 15% following better-than-expected holiday-quarter report.   Yesterday, Electronic Arts reported its earnings for the quarter ending December 31, 2010. Using generally accepted accounting principles, it was a rough quarter for the company, with $322 million in losses on $1.05 billion of revenue. However, excluding one-time charges such as restructuring expenses, the company had a solid quarter, with profits of $196 million on $1.4 billion of revenue. EA's stock shot skyward this morning. This morning, the markets reacted to the latter number--strongly. As of press time, EA stock was up nearly 15 percent, or $2.33, to $17.95. Trading volume was heavy, with 31.82 million shares in play, with the stock reaching a hig...

EA Aims To Take Back The Shooter Crown

By GameInformer, published 02-02-2011

Speaking to investors on a conference call, Electronic Arts CEO John Riccitiello laid out the company's strategy for unseating Call of Duty as the predominant shooter on the market. "I don't want to give away the thunder from our call but for quite a long time now I've been saying it's our long term goal to take back the first person shooter category leadership," he said. "We've made strong progress in calendar '10 over calendar '09. This year, with the tail-end of Battlefield: Bad Company 2 still doing well and Medal of Honor still doing well... with Crysis [2] and Bulletstorm we're clearly going to make more progress towards our goal and that's before we get to what I think is going to be a very exciting entry later in the y...

UPDATE: EA's Multiple Million Sellers

By GameInformer, published 02-02-2011

UPDATE: More news has come out about EA's last financial quarter, including the fact that Madden NFL 11, FIFA 11, and Battlefield: Bad Company 2 all sold over five million units (see below for more). More interestingly, perhaps, is the fact that EA is touting 39 percent year-over-year growth in its digital sales to $211 million for the quarter thanks to DLC from games like FIFA 11 and Bad Company 2. Earlier this year, EA CEO John Riccitiello believed that digital revenues will surpass those from retail thanks to DLC and other initiatives.   ORIGINAL STORY: In 2010, Electronic Arts brought back two properties that were once the kings of the mountain: Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit and Medal of Honor. EA prepping mystery shooter?

By GameSpot, published 02-02-2011

CEO John Riccitiello says plan to reestablish footing in FPS market is on track with Crysis 2 and Bulletstorm--but that he's "very excited" about another unannounced title. Today, Electronic Arts reported its earnings for the quarter ending December 31, 2010--and may have revealed the existence of a new first-person shooter in the process. As part of the report, the company revealed that its latest FPS, Medal of Honor, has shipped over 5 million units to date. The figure marks the latest milestone in EA's effort to claim the FPS genre crown, which has rested squarely on Activision's head for the past several years, thanks to the Call of Duty franchise. EA CEO John Riccitiello referenced that struggle, saying his company did much better in calendar year 2010 than in calendar year 2009 w...

Medal of Honor, Hot Pursuit ship 5 million

By GameSpot, published 02-01-2011

EA's rocky holiday quarter results in $1.05 billion in revenue, $322 net loss during three-month period; EA Sports Active 2 "well below expectations."   If there's one quarter where a publisher wants to best its performance from the prior year, it's the highly lucrative holiday window. Unfortunately, such was not the case for Electronic Arts. NFS Hot Pursuit has amassed quite a following for EA. Today, the megapublisher issued its third-quarter earnings report for the October-December window, revealing net revenue fell 15 percent to $1.05 billion, down from $1.24 billion during the year prior. Net losses also mounted during the period, plummeting to $322 million from an already-substantial $82 million last year. EA was quick to point out that exclud...

EA: Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit and Medal of Honor Are Multiple Million Sellers

By GameInformer, published 02-01-2011

In 2010, Electronic Arts brought back two properties that were once the kings of the mountain: Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit and Medal of Honor. While the former was critically liked, the latter didn't fare so well. EA, however, says that both series were commercially successful. In a conference call for Electronic Arts' fiscal year 2011 quarter 3 earnings report, GamePro is reporting that EA said both games sold over five million copies. Details are scarce, but we're assuming that EA is referring to each selling five million, and that's worldwide sales. Those aren't Grand Theft Auto numbers, by any means, but they also aren't bad, either. There are already strong rumors that EA and developer Danger Close are working on a sequel to Medal of Honor due to job listings ...
