In the last year of 2K Sports' MLB exclusivity, developer Visual Concepts focused on polish instead of a ton of new features. MLB 2K12 is the only baseball game available for non-PlayStation 3/PS Vita owners, so does the focus on polish and tweaking pay off or does it drink beers in the clubhouse and have a monumental collapse? I feel like MLB 2K12 does play better than its predecessor, but it still suffers from a lot of the same problems. First off, I'm going to talk about the graphics, which is by far the weakest part of the game. This will be the only time in the review that I compare 2K12 to MLB 12: The Show, but The Show on the PS Vita has better graphics than 2K12 has on consoles. The game hasn't even taken steps towards become more graphically enhanced. Player models are dull, their uniform is always creased in the same spot, some of the biggest faces in baseball are unrecognizable, and the stadiums fail to impress. Also, the fans and their animations are just atrocious. The biggest grief I have against the visuals are players in the batter's box. When they walk up, they look fine, but right as they enter their batting stance, their chest swells up and they have a huge block for an upper body.
Our MLB 2K12 PC review is currently in progress because I'd like to see how the online portion performs in a live environment. Once I'm able to get through a couple of competitive games with other players I'll be able to weigh in with a final score. I've updated the review with my final impressions on the second page as well as a score. It's largely accepted that Sony's MLB The Show series has dominated the baseball videogame market since 2008. That's great for PlayStation 3 users, but what about everyone else? Since 2K Sports negotiated an exclusivity deal (set to expire this year), the MLB 2K series has been the only serious game of baseball in town for everyone without a PS3 and it hasn't reviewed nearly as well. That being said, MLB 2K12 feels like a long time coming, building upon ideas established in 2K10, and almost delivers on a well-focused baseball game, something PC gamers haven't had since EA's MVP 2005. If it wasn't for a couple of bugs that shipped with the retail PC copy, it could have been the well-rounded baseball game I've been waiting years to see from 2K Sports, but it'll need a couple of patches to get there. Every single one of those virtual fans absolutely hates this man. Bugs in the Grass I continually ran into two major bugs in my time with MLB 2K12.
