Lunar: Silver Star Harmony

The first game in the Lunar series is right up there with the best Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest titles as one of the all-time RPG favorites among players. It's also quite possibly the most remade game in history, getting more than three different versions in an 000short span of time. Lunar Silver Star started out as a Sega CD game, got an improved port on Sega Saturn and Sony Playstation a few years later, and is now hitting the PSP in Silver Star Harmony. In its numerous remakes, Lunar had its soundtrack reworked, voice acting added in, and even animated cutscenes. Xseed not only reworked everything that was remade before, but also completely revamped the graphics. It gives the game a hand-drawn visual style, making Harmony the ultimate version of Silver Star by far. Lunar tells the story of Alex and Luna, two kids destined to relive the story of their childhood heroes and save the world from being taken over by an evil tribe that was shunned by the local goddess Althena centuries ago. And as always, a merry band of companions join the group along the way, in typical RPG fashion. There are numerous additions to the game that pad the story, giving a little more background to events only mentioned in past versions.

Lunar: Silver Star Harmony Review

Great stories resonate with society independent of pop culture fads. These are the tales told over and over, slightly evolving with time but maintaining the central themes that make them worth repeating. Lunar has lived on four consoles since its release over a decade ago on the SEGA CD, and it continues to find an audience not because of the straightforward gameplay but because of its timeless tale of young love, betrayal, and friendship. That said this PSP iteration is the best looking version of Lunar ever created. The environments have been beautifully redrawn, and the character and menu art looks gorgeous on the PSP. Sony's handheld also ensures that the soundtrack sounds as good as ever and the classic animated cutscenes remain intact. The spoken dialogue and songs are a huge part of this game's world and they come through beautifully. There's even an in-game item that allows players to watch these scenes at any time. If you are interested in picking up Silver Star Harmony for nostalgia alone, this is a brilliant remake that accentuates the game's best qualities. If you're new to Lunar you should know that at its core is a battle system that shows its age and will eventually bore some players.

Lunar: Silver Star Harmony

This revamp of GameArts' classic JRPG may boast gorgeous updated graphics, but at its core, its still very much the same Lunar: Silver Star Story that's been released and re-released multiple times on the Sega CD, Sega Saturn, Playstation, and GBA. That's good news for longtime fans, but it's also disappointing because with just a few tweaks, this version could have, and should have, been the definitive version of a much beloved classic. Over the course of writing this challenging review, I've come to realize just how much Lunar has in common with Final Fantasy IV. That might seem odd to say, but hear me out, folks -- both games were originally released at a time when RPGs were still a niche genre, both have endearing stories full of melodrama and memorable characters, and both have been remade numerous times over the years. The latter point is particularly important in this case; fellow reviewer Jeremy Parish of 1UP lamented in his Final Fantasy IV DS review that there is no one "definitive" version of the game that can be recommended above all others. As I played Silver Star Harmony, I had the same feeling -- the game outdoes previous editions in many areas, but also has numerous faults that keep it from being the Lunar to play.
