It's not fair. Frodo, Gandalf, Aragorn, and the rest of the fellowship get all the glory, but without the brave struggles of so many others, they never could have succeeded on their vital errand. The Lord of the Rings: War in the North tells the tale of three new heroes who helped make the fellowship's success possible, and it gives you much of what you'd want from a hack-and-slash role-playing game set in Middle-earth. There's plenty of great loot to collect, a number of powerful abilities to acquire, and tons of orcs and cave trolls to slay. Unfortunately, these bright spots only make it that much more disappointing when frustrations arise and overshadow this heroic adventure, as they so often do. Andriel of Rivendell; Eradan of the Dunedain rangers; and Farin, champion of Erebor, are thrown together by war and join forces. This union of elves, dwarves, and men sets out to foil the evil forces of Agandaur, a servant of the dark lord Sauron whose schemes threaten free peoples residing far from the conflicts in Rohan and Gondor. The story is typical, but it provides an excuse to send you to creepy barrows, snowy mountains, dwarven mines, and other places that evoke the atmosphere of the Lord of the Rings films.
Can LOTR: War in the North step out of a huge fantasy RPG shadow? It's unfortunate that Lord of the Rings: War in the North is being released during a year when the fantasy RPG void has already been filled with AAA-fare from established game franchises. Even with the Tolkien-approved branding, the game is stuck in the shadows of the enormous fantasy worlds of Dragon Age 2, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, and The Witcher 2.But LOTR's aim is to touch on that thing that's been a glaring omission on the others' back-of-the-box features. A single-player campaign is available in War in the North, but the game is built for co-op. For anyone who spent their teen years half-imagining a friendship with Legolas, Gimli, and Aragorn, War in the North takes the group quest-fantasy and gives you up to three-player co-op to fulfil the wish.Snowblind Studios is the little Seattle outfit whose CV includes, most notably, the Baldur's Gate console spin-off Dark Alliance. War in the North is interpreted similarly; a hack and slash title which - in this case - features a three-character collective for you to group alongside and traditional RPG elements of loot gathering and skill tree compulsion.
The Lord of the Rings story is known the world over for its epic scale and for the bonds between the members of the fellowship. Unless you've been boning up on your LOTR lore, the War in the North saga may not ring as true as the content of the films. This chapter takes place at the same time that Sam and Frodo are desperately trying to hurl jewellery into a volcano, and plays as the backdrop for Snowblind Studios' upcoming game. We recently got our hands on the three-player cooperative game (the title will support two-player split-screen, two- to three-player LAN, and two to three players online in addition to a single-player mode). We took control of the dwarven tank class during a quest in the Misty Mountains. The demo opened with us flying towards our destination aboard the feathery backs of giant talking birds. We were dropped in a safe spot and given a chance to get to grips with the controls. As you'd expect from a console action role-playing game like this, each character's primary skills--shooting arrows, hurling magic, and swinging a sword--are mapped to the face buttons. More advanced class-specific skills like aggro management and area-of-effect spells are found in submenus by pressing the bumpers and are tied to cooldown timers to stop them from being spammed.
