LEGO Star Wars III: The Clone Wars

Lego Star Wars III: The Clone Wars encapsulates the far-reaching breadth of war. Space assaults pit plucky fighter crafts against monstrous battle cruisers; on land, a battalion of rocket-wielding clones take on a six-legged tank; and the entire affair is tied together with a sweeping story that includes dozens of characters from across the universe. This game is absolutely bursting with content, and the variety and scope of battles separates it from its much more restrictive forebearers. But all is not well in this far-away galaxy. Obtuse puzzles and directionless objectives force you to frequently stop your lightsaber-swinging fun to figure out what the heck you have to do next, and an assortment of control quirks have you fighting the game as often as you're fighting the empire. These problems pervade every inch of this epic adventure, overshadowing improvements in other areas. The Clone Wars contains the lighthearted fun the series is known for, but frustration bubbles just below the surface in this uneven sequel. The theatrical releases of Star Wars have been tapped dry at this point, so The Clone Wars draws its inspiration from television's well.

LEGO Star Wars 3 Review

In the interests of full disclosure, here's what I knew about Star Wars: The Clone Wars before playing this game: it's a cartoon; it's set after the film where Christopher Lee fights Yoda, but before that scene where Anakin Skywalker goes bad and murders a room full of children; and there's a female Jedi who looks a bit like somebody out of Thundercats, so if you Google her name with SafeSearch off you get some very nasty results. This is worth noting because I used to believe it was vital to understand their respective source materials to enjoy the LEGO series, but it turns out my complete ignorance of Clone Wars did little to hamper the enjoyment received from the game's many humorous cutscenes.Yes, it's still peppered with that nice mix of slapstick and whimsy which has proved so effective in former games. While I might be about fifteen years above the target audience - since Woolworths went bust I don't know where you're supposed to even buy LEGO - I still found myself chuckling at plenty of the game's visual gags.

Lego Star Wars III: The Clone Wars (Preview)

Regardless of your feelings toward the movie Star Wars: Attack of the Clones, Lego Star Wars III: The Clone Wars at least picks up at a point where most of the awkward moments have passed and the fun begins--although it would have been funny to see how Traveller's Tales would have interpreted the famous "I don't like sand" scene. The game's storyline encompasses the events of the animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars and takes the Lego games to the next step. The gameplay, the unlockables, and the goofy sense of humor are all intact, and The Clone Wars looks to be doing a great job capturing the sheer size and scale of the battles that are seen in the television series. The game begins in the battle arena on Geonosis where Obi-Wan, Anakin, and Padme have been sentenced to death by giant ugly creatures. You'll find a way out of this mess, however, by using the Force if you're playing as a Jedi or using Padme's blaster/grappling hook/whip combo. Mace Windu eventually shows up to help and provide lightsabers, and you'll immediately see just how chaotic these scenes can get when there are dozens of droids coming from all directions and an acklay trying to spear you with its enormous claw.
