Kinect Sports: Season 2

A new year brings a new round of casually-oriented Kinect gaming options. You've got a slew of new dance games and... a brand new dashboard... coming soon. You know, there aren't too many new Kinect options for us, are there? Of the few, Kinect Sports Season 2 is here to test your limbs and endurance in six new sports. Replacing last year's Soccer, Volleyball, Track & Field, Bowling, Table Tennis, and Boxing, Season 2 features Tennis, Golf, American Football, Baseball, Skiing, and Darts, all of which requires a mishmash of the same activities and motions from the previous game. You'll find yourself running in place after catching a pass in Football, just like you did in Track & Field. Baseball and Golf mimic last year's Bowling. Tennis and Table Tennis are about as similar as they sound. Regardless, Season 2's target audience isn't the kind of gamer who'd criticize the repetition. Darts and Baseball suffer the worst from the inaccuracies of the Kinect technology, while Tennis and Football do a fairly good job of putting you in the feet of the virtual athletes on screen. That doesn't mean those sports are perfect. They aren't.

Kinect Sports: Season 2 Review

Describing Kinect Sports: Season 2 instills in me an intense sense of deja vu. The mini-game collection allows players to pantomime sports actions in bite sized amounts from the safety of their living room. Wait, that sounds really familiar. Haven't we all already done that before, like, last year? And the year before? And the year before that? Kinect Sports Season 2 is no worse than the last few years of motion sports mini-games (in fact it's better than many), but I think we're kind of done here, guys. Season 2 hits the same notes as last year's Kinect Sports game: take six sports – some you've played with a remote or wand before, some new – and apply the controller free system to them. It's all one to one actions: throw to throw a ball, jump to jump, lean to lean. Get it? It worked well last year, and was one of the few successful games for the Kinect launch. Fast forward a year, and Microsoft's big holiday Kinect title is... more of the same. Hey batter, swing! Most of the sports on the disc are well done. Skiing is a personal favorite, especially when racing another person. Baseball and football have been underrepresented on Kinect so it's good to have those on board as well.

Kinect Sports Season 2 Review

Kinect Sports Season 2 is every bit as entertaining as last year's original, but it's also got similar flaws. As a party game for when you're amongst friends there's nothing more immediate and fun on the Xbox 360, but anyone wanting Kinect to deliver accurate representations of the included sports will feel quite disappointed. The sports offered this time around are darts, golf, baseball, skiing, American football and tennis. It's a decent mix that should offer something for everyone, but two American sports out of six might be a little off-putting for us Brits. The real problem is that I only really enjoyed four of them.Darts is my favourite, more than likely due to the fact that it most closely resembles the real sport it's based on. Kinect accurately tracks your throwing hand to move an aiming reticule, with the target zone being locked in when you pull your arm back. Where your dart ends up depends on the speed and direction of your throw, so it's still possible to miss the target. With a little practice it's quite easy to knock in the treble-20s and wipe the floor with the competition, but I'm still trying to get the Achievement for a nine-dart finish.
