Disneyland is one of the only places in the world where you can stroll down an idealized version of a small-town American Main Street, visit a haunted mansion, get a hug from Mickey Mouse, soar over London and into Neverland with Peter Pan, and have other wondrous experiences that are normally available only in the imagination. Disneyland Adventures tries to make these and other quintessentially Disneyland experiences available to you in the comfort of your own home. And in many ways, it succeeds. The park is re-created here with impressive accuracy and detail, and the attractions you can visit admirably capture the spirit of the rides that inspired them. Unfortunately, flawed controls mar nearly every aspect of Disneyland Adventures, making what should be a thoroughly enjoyable visit to the happiest place on earth as frustrating as it is fantastical. You play as a child, free to roam the park to your heart's content without the need to wait in any long lines or stick close to virtual parents. (Actual parents needn't worry; this version of Disneyland is perfectly safe for youngsters.) After settling on an appearance for your in-game avatar, you're greeted by a talking golden ticket who becomes your constant companion in the park.
I love Disney. Living three hours away from Disney World and having a two and a half year old obsessed with Cars, Toy Story, and Mickey Mouse will do that to you. I grew up in a Disney household and have been to the Disney World for just about every holiday. However, I have never been to Disneyland. Thanks to Frontier Developments and Microsoft Studios, I can get that experience in the comfort of my living room. I've been very cautious with my expectations of Disney-related video games. Before the Toy Story 3 and Cars 2 games for the 360, the last Disney game I enjoyed was Mickey Mania for the Sega Genesis. I am also less than enthusiastic by most of the games released for the Kinect. So the combination of the two had me worried. After about half an hour with Kinect: Disneyland Adventures, those worries were gone. This game jumped to the top of my "favorite games for the Kinect" list. All of the Disney charm that you've come to expect covers every corner of this game. It is appropriate for all ages, parents and their children can enjoy it together, and even adults will enjoy it on their own. The game has you create your avatar, either a boy or girl with a few customizable feature (I would have preferred to use my Xbox Live avatar, but no matter).

Kinect Disneyland Adventures does a good job of replicating both the good and the bad of an authentic Disney experience. After spending a lot of time with Kinect Disneyland Adventures, I feel like I usually do after hanging out at the real Disneyland. I enjoyed myself, but I'm tired. I have fond memories of many of the good times I had, but overall my experience is somewhat tainted by the portions that frustrated me. This gaming potpourri of all things Disney is an enjoyable ride overall, but even a virtual Fast Pass doesn't mask its Frontierland-sized flaws. My initial instincts when popping Disneyland Adventures into my Xbox are just like everyone else's when they first walk through the gates of the Magic Kingdom -- I want to explore! And this game certainly lends itself to plenty of that. Adventures is massive! Every themed section of the park -- from Critter Country to Tomorrowland -- has been recreated in great detail, and just like at the actual Disneyland, there is plenty to see and do. Famous Disney characters are scattered throughout the park, and best of all, they're not swarmed with tourists! You can actually walk up to them and say hello, have a dance, get your picture taken, and help them out on quests.
I've been spoiled when it comes to Disneyland. As a Southern California resident I grew up going to "The Happiest Place on Earth" on a regular basis. I'm an annual pass carrying, pin collecting, novelty hat wearing Disneyland nut with an autograph book full of fake signatures from fictional characters. So believe me when I say that Kinect Disneyland Adventures recreates the Magic Kingdom so well that it sometimes surpasses Disneyland itself. Frontier, the group behind the almost too cute Kinectimals, has made a nearly perfectly to scale rendition of Disneyland. You can walk from the main gate of the park all the way back to Mickey's Toontown, and everywhere in between. I'm amazed at how well Disneyland is presented. Nearly every inch of the park is in here, save for certain shops, restaurants and restrooms. Even things that didn't need to be rendered, like the FastPass alcove for rides, are in here. The ambient music features the same tunes you hear in the actual park. Everything is in place and detailed to perfection, down to the location of the more iconic "Hidden Mickeys." Matterhorn rises up over Fantasyland. You can walk through Sleeping Beauty's castle to find Snow White waiting for you in front of the carousel.
Kinect Disneyland Adventures wasn't designed for the people who will undoubtedly snicker at the sight of player avatars getting long hugs from Donald Duck. Instead, Kinect Disneyland Adventures is geared toward the folks who are likely to visit the park in real life. It might not offer the same sights and sounds as an actual trip to Anaheim, but families that are looking for a way to escape the winter blues with a vacation (even a virtual one) should check it out. Disneyland Adventures is a series of minigames based on familiar park attractions, all wrapped up in a faithfully realized recreation of the Magic Kingdom. One or two players can explore the park, help Mickey and his friends with tasks, and play through the slew of minigames. Take that reductive approach, however, and you risk missing how well the entire package has been put together. Navigating the park is a bit strange at first, but it quickly becomes second nature. To move, you hold a hand out in front of your body, moving it to either side to turn. You're free to roam around and soak in the atmosphere, or you can be more productive and perform special tasks for various characters throughout Disneyland, such as collecting autographs or finding missing item.
