Ivy the Kiwi?

Producer Yuji Naka helped created Sonic the Hedgehog, one of the most iconic characters in all of gaming, but his latest effort is a bit more subdued and relaxed. But despite her lack of speed, Ivy the Kiwi still stars in a terrific puzzle experience for the DS. Most gamers will recognize Yuji Naka for his role in creating the iconic character Sonic the Hedgehog, whose many adventures were instrumental in keeping Sega competitive with Nintendo and its plump plumber. After helming several Sonic sequels and various other projects, Naka left Sega to form his own independent development team called Prope. Their first effort was the interesting Let’s Tap, a title that was more memorable for its use of the Wii Remote’s accelerometer than for its gameplay, and now they’re back with a new title called I’ve been closely following since its inception. Called Ivy the Kiwi?, the title looked like a return to the sort of high-quality, character-driven platform games that defined the 16-bit generation and Naka’s career, but surprisingly, rather than recall Naka’s early work with Sonic, it follows in the footsteps of titles like Lemmings, Adventures of Lolo, and Solomon’s Key.

Ivy the Kiwi? Review

I can't talk about Ivy the Kiwi? without mentioning famed Sonic programmer Yuji Naka. After parting ways with Sega in 2006, Naka founded Prope Ltd. and slowly started releasing quirky downloadable games that were nothing if not unique. While many of those minigames were good, clean fun, Ivy the Kiwi? has the kind of innovative spark that longtime Naka fans will love to see again. Ivy the Kiwi? is both the hero of this game and an awkward reply to the game's main objective. As the omnipotent, ivy-clad hand of god, it's your task to wrangle the poor little hatchling named Ivy who needs help finding her mother. Since Ivy is so distraught about her mother's absence, you have to use three magical vines to guide and guard her to the exit. Sound a little tricky to pick up? Well, only for a little while. Ivy the Kiwi? isn't like most standard puzzle games or platformers. Instead of using a D-pad or joystick to control the hapless bird, Ivy is on a manic autopilot that you must reign in with the vines that sprout from your Wii Remote's pointer. It's similar to "create-a-platformer" DS games like Kirby Canvas Curse, but managing your panicked little friend here takes a bit more planning and patience.

Ivy the Kiwi

When I first heard about Ivy the Kiwi, it was in the context of being the new game from Yuji Naka, the creator of Sonic the Hedgehog. And while that's a notable fact that may help sales (and is printed right there on the back of the game box), I think Ivy the Kiwi is a game that's fun enough to stand on its own, without comparisons to any spiny mammals that have fallen from grace. In Ivy the Kiwi, players don't control the titular character. The baby bird just runs willy nilly through the levels, and it's up to players to keep her from dying. They do this by drawing vines across the screen that can act as platforms, walls, ramps, and slingshots. It's a simple concept, but as the game progresses and Ivy makes her way through more than 100 levels, the difficulty ramps up. I'm impressed with how subtle the difficulty progression was. I didn't even really notice until I let my roommate play the game at around level 60. He thought the game was impossible. But new concepts are introduced so gradually that they're barely noticeable while actually playing the game. The entire game takes place in a storybook, and everything looks like it was printed on old parchment.

Ivy the Kiwi

With so many big names such as Metroid: Other M, Sonic the Hedgehog 4, and Halo taking up a huge chunk of the gaming spotlight, it’s easy to overlook the more obscure releases out there. Ivy the Kiwi? is a title that many gamers out there may overlook, and it’s a shame, too, because this engaging platformer by the legendary Yuji Naka, programmer behind the original Sonic the Hedgehog, is addictive, creative, heartwarming, and a crazy amount of fun. Following the exploits of the titular Ivy, Ivy the Kiwi? is a story about a newborn kiwi who has fallen from her nest and separated from her mother. Distressed, the hatchling sets out to find her beloved mama. With the eggshell still stuck to her body, young Ivy takes off running, prepared to take on the worst to get home. What stands out about Ivy the Kiwi? initially is its accessibility. The moment you pick up the game and start playing, you should begin to get the hang of it and should get hooked almost immediately. The design of the game is simple: Help Ivy get through 50 stages by drawing vines onscreen to keep her from falling down pitfalls, hitting spikes, or getting hit by raindrops. This is an on-rails game, and Ivy runs on her own, so you have to stay alert and draw those vines.
