Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary

Who doesn't get sentimental when they hear the word "anniversary"? To many people, it's a time of reflection and looking back on all those great years that have passed. For some, it's a chance to show off all the weight they've lost and talk about how amazing their new job at ImARichBastardNYoureNot is. But for the video game world, it's an opportunity to dust off some old classics and watch them sell like hotcakes. (What is a \"hotcake” anyway? What about cupcakes? Everyone likes those. Forget it, forget it, I digress.) As I was saying, anniversaries are oh-so awesome, especially when it's Halo! That's right, ladies and dudes, Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary is here to be the best first-person shooter around. Way better than Call of that whatever Modern Warfare, I'll keep my extra 20 bucks, thank you very much. I know what you're thinking; I must be on some kind of ridiculous hallucinogen. Hear me out. Ten years ago when Microsoft Studios first released Halo, they started a bit of a wave. The option to play games online against other people was a glorious spectacle. Online gaming had been around but wasn't quite as popular as it would come to be because of Halo.

Ten years ago, Halo single-handedly managed to make gamers sit up and pay attention to the fledgling Xbox. Redefining the potential scope and ambition of a console FPS, Bungie’s original game established a benchmark for control, pacing, universe-building, and multiplayer options that would be emulated for years. The revamped anniversary edition of the game does an excellent job of honoring that legacy, even if the project as a whole feels like it’s seeking an identity in the middle ground between new and old. While longtime fans will remember Combat Evolved as the birth of the series, newer players should note that Anniversary picks up the story right where Reach left off. Master Chief awakes from cryo-sleep as a Covenant armada descends on the ship from which he escaped Reach. The armored hero and his shipmates crash land on a mysterious ring world and begin to unravel its secrets. While the story remains nearly untouched, keen-eyed players will note the addition of some new story content through several scattered terminals. Each triggers a cinematic that expands on the Halo fiction in new ways, offering untold details about the Flood, the Forerunners, and other story points.

If you've ever played an Xbox in your life, then odds are that you've played Halo: Combat Evolved, which launched the system and captivated millions of players. But the question isn't "How good was it then?" It's "How good is it now?" The answer: It's still really, really good. The campaign tells an intriguing story full of fluid action, fierce enemies, stirring music, and thrilling moments. The overhauled visuals look great; flipping between the classic and remastered presentation modes not only makes you realize what a thorough and faithful job the artists have done, but it also makes you appreciate how well the original art design stands the test of time. Six updated multiplayer maps and one new Firefight map round out this discount package with some competitive and cooperative fun. Thus, Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary provides a great way to relive the past, as well as an exciting and rewarding adventure that holds up very well in today's shooter scene. The story of what happened when humanity first encountered a halo is still an interesting one, even if you've heard it before. It starts with a crash landing, followed by a race to discover what this strange place is all about.

I think it's important to tell you a story about Crewman #1. He might only have one line in the entire of Halo: Combat Evolved - "Behind us! They're right behind us!" - yet our humble and understandingly petrified Crewman #1 is the perfect embodiment of the raw, enduring spirit of the game. Voiced by one-time Bungie community guy Matt Soell, the other indubitably epic lines of this iconic character were left on the cutting room floor by musical luminary Martin O'Donnell. It takes a little while to remember that - despite myriad visual touch-ups and flourishes in this remastered edition - Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary is the Halo that was, not the Halo it would become in later years. These characters aren't being voiced by celebrities like Wash off Firefly and Marlo from The Wire, and Bungie didn't have the money to rope in the unbearably gorgeous Aisha Tyler to play Female Trooper #2. Before Halo became the poster boy for the Xbox, and Bungie the stewards of one of largest entertainment franchises of all time, the team had to make do with what they had.And what they had was a small team of coders and artists utterly devoted to working on this seminal game.

Review: Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary

Following the original blueprint left by Bungie, Halo: CE Anniversary proves that the franchise is in good hands with the crew at 343 Industries. Remastering and remaking a treasured video game like Halo: Combat Evolved is not a fair task for any developer to be assigned. No matter what, there are going to be changes (or non-changes) that fans of the original game aren't going to like -- so the real trick is, can you balance enough new and old content to satisfy both crowds? Looking at Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary, 343 Industries found a very elegant solution. Playing through Halo with new graphics and musical arrangements from Skywalker Sound really tugs on those feelings of nostalgia -- and the first time you press the back button, you'll be taken aback by the visual upgrade. Seeing every part of Master Chief's first adventure in high-definition splendor is a beautiful thing, especially when you see and hear the new elements that accompany the original game's source code. It arguably sets a standard that most other re-releases should follow, rather than just lazily porting older generation games to new HD systems.

Halo Combat Evolved Anniversary Review

Reverence and nostalgia are not criterion for reviews here at IGN, nor should they be. As a video game reviewer, I am often put in a position where criticism must come before such things. That said, Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary is a remake of a ten year old game that ships with what amounts to a larger-than-normal map pack for last year's Halo entry, Halo: Reach. With ample refinements to game design and general usability in the shooter genre since its original release, the game, a classic though it may be, hasn't aged as flawlessly as many of us long-time fans might have hoped or imagined it would, and the map pack delivers more of an add-on feel than a true revisiting of the LAN-lost days of yore. Halo: Combat Evolved is and will always be a landmark masterpiece of the FPS genre. The game blasted onto the scene as the killer app for the original Xbox, and not only legitimized the multiplayer FPS experience on consoles; it proved that the console FPS was the future of online play. Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary Video Review Halo Combat Evolved Anniversary has two separate components. The first is a full HD remake of the original campaign from Combat Evolved.
